I must, however, remind him that animals were rarely petted and therefore rarely observed in the Renaissance. Vasari, for instance, gets into a fury of contempt when describing Sodoma's devotion to pet birds and horses." Having from my schooldays been accustomed to keep animals and birds, to sketch them and to look vii ANIMAL LIFE IN ITALIAN PAINTING for them in painting, I had a general recollection which would not quite square with the statement that they were rarely petted and therefore rarely observed in the Renaissance.

I contend that in both texts, fairies become intimately associated with conceptions of the ancient British past, and, more narrowly, with the idea of a specifically insular kingship that seeks its legitimization within that past. In Chapter One, I argue that Map’s longer version of the Herla narrative is his own synthesis of traditional materials, intended to highlight the continuity of a notion of British kingship that includes the pygmy king, Herla and Henry II.

ISSUE 5 THE MYTH OF REVOLT Do you sense it—on the streets, in the dreamtime, by the shore? Like a great hand that glows in the dark, groping to strangle destiny, the myth of revolt is feeling its way into existence. Let’s go searching to assemble the scattered limbs of the black god.
