BAM announces December BAMcafé Live lineup

McNeill, associate producer, music programming—announces its lineup for December. BAMcafé Live events have no cover charge and no drink minimum. Fri, Dec 5 at 10pm Aziza Miller Aziza’s truthful lyrics and smooth soul music have earned her a wealth of praise. New York Amsterdam News hails “her piano artistry and her soulful voice” sends listeners “into dimensions of contemplation and realization…and awakening.” Her latest album, What’s on Your Mind, showcases her signature sound, and its first single, “The Subway,” has become a show-stopper at recent concerts.

Sat, Dec 6 at 10pm Shannon Sanders Singer, songwriter, and producer Shannon Sanders is a two-time Grammy Award-winner who has written hits for artists including India.Arie, John Legend, and Heather Headley. His second solo project, Grown Man Handbook, is a raw and honest album that showcases Sanders’ songwriting abilities, as well as his powerhouse vocals. The project’s first single, “Man Up,” has earned praise from fans and critics alike.

Fri, Dec 12 at 9pm Wayna Grammy-nominated, Ethiopian-born songwriter Wayna has been called “one to watch” by Essence magazine and "a stand out on the indie front" by Billboard. Her third and latest album, The Expats, is a unique blend of African and reggae-inspired soul, fused with classic and alternative rock. Named after the diverse group of international musicians and producers who worked on the project, the album presents a new world-soul sound for this rising star.

Sat, Dec 13 at 9pm The Afro-Semitic Experience Co-founded by African-American jazz pianist Warren Byrd and Jewish-American jazz bassist David Chevan, the Afro-Semitic Experience is a band that combines an eclectic array of styles with sophisticated musicianship and stellar songwriting. With its unique instrumentation, solid grooves, and ability to get an audience on its feet, the Afro-Semitic Experience is redefining the jazz concert. The ensemble’s music is an intricate tapestry of spiritual, world-beat, funk, jazz, cantorial, gospel, salsa, and swing. The group has performed at festivals, churches, synagogues, and colleges throughout the US.

Fri, Dec 19 at 9pm TamarRaqs Winter Solstice Hafla Tamar has studied Raqs Sharqi (bellydancing) with masters such as Arianna al Tiye, Dalia Carella, and Elena Lentini, and has performed at venues including Falucka, Au Bar, Lafayette Grill, and Café Figaro. She returns to BAMcafé this season with special guests to help her usher in the winter with her much celebrated hafla—“party” in Arabic—complete with Raqs Sharqi and music from the Middle East and North Africa.

Sat, Dec 20 at 9pm JEWMONGOUS: Unkosher Comedy Songs featuring Sean Altman JEWMONGOUS is a comedy song concert created by Sean Altman, the former leader and founder of . Called “wickedly humorous...tuneful and sharply witty” (Los Angeles Times), the show has sold out in 25 cities across the US. JEWMONGOUS' debut album, Taller Than Jesus showcases a dozen Altman originals and a raucous cover of The Ramones’ classic "I Wanna Be Sedated."

Sat, Dec 27 at 9pm Charanga Soleil Charanga Soleil effortlessly fuses the unique sounds from four very distinct cultures: Cuban salsa, Congolese rumba-soukous, Haitian compas, and Puerto Rican plena-bomba. Founded by musician, writer, and radio personality Al Angeloro, the group has received critical acclaim and has performed at leading venues across the US. The group returns to BAMcafé this December for its annual holiday dance party.

General Information BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, BAM Rose Cinemas, and BAMcafé are located in the Peter Jay Sharp building at 30 Lafayette Avenue (between St Felix Street and Ashland Place) in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn. BAM Harvey Theater is located two blocks from the main building at 651 Fulton Street (between Ashland and Rockwell Places). Both locations house Greenlight Bookstore at BAM kiosks. BAM Fisher, located at 321 Ashland Place, is the newest addition to the BAM campus and houses the Judith and Alan Fishman Space and Rita K. Hillman Studio. BAM Rose Cinemas is Brooklyn’s only movie house dedicated to first-run independent and foreign film and repertory programming. BAMcafé, operated by Great Performances, offers a dinner menu prior to BAM Howard Gilman Opera House evening performances. BAMcafé also features an eclectic mix of live music for BAMcafé Live on Friday and Saturday nights with a bar menu available starting at 6pm.
