Brooks Ashmanskas By Benjamin Lindsay Tell us a bit about your “The Prom” character. My character is Barry Glickman, who is a Broadway actor—and a gay one at that, so it’s a real stretch. He’s a relatively successful veteran. He and his friend and colleague Dee Dee Allen, who’s played by Beth Leavel—the show opens with us at the opening night of a new musical; it gets killed by the Times and we’re going to close, so we want to figure something out to get good press. We end up finding this story about this little lesbian girl from a high school in Indiana who wanted to take her girlfriend to the prom, and the PTA reacted by canceling the entire thing. So, [we decide] we’re gonna go down there and save the day. Of course, we end up making everything worse—big-city liberals meeting up with Middle America not-liberals. Then the show shifts, and they learn things from us, we learn things from them. Everybody changes for the better. It’s very old-fashioned, in a way. How has playing Barry made you a better actor? This show hits very close to home. The character is very much a turned-up version of me, so when I’m feeling things onstage, I really do feel them. It’s really challenged me to just embrace being as honest as possible. I’m usually out to be just a funny guy, which is fine; I love making people laugh. But there are layers to this character. It’s really refreshing, honestly. Have you ever used Backstage? [I did,] way back when you could get [the newspaper] on the street and you would find auditions or where to get a headshot. I remember, when I first arrived [in New York City], which was a Given his Broadway résumé (“Something long time ago, always getting Backstage. I don’t like to prepare nominee Brooks Ashmanskas admit much. I like to be not unprepared, but as underprepared as possible so that he’s “not often asked to do things” things can happen there and I’m not trying to give a performance. I’m without auditioning. That’s what makes trying to just breathe or sing or whatever it is right then. Of course, I’m as familiar with the material as I can be and all that, but I like to go on the fly. his starring role in “The Prom” so special: Director and choreographer Casey What advice would you give your younger self? On Nov. 2, while accepting a Performance Award for “Barry” from the IndieWire Honors, Hader begged attendees to sign the petition. “There’s a petition to save FilmStruck, which is my favorite thing on Earth,” he said, eliciting applause from the crowd. “I know there’s a lot bigger fish to fry right now in the world, but in my little kingdom, if we can save FilmStruck, that’d be awesome.” FilmStruck stopped accepting new subscrib- ers in late October, and current subscribers will be able to view the service’s content until Nov. 29. William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. WHO AM I REALLY?: QUESTIONING THE PATRIARCHAL “GIRL WORLD” TO FIND IDENTITY IN MEAN GIRLS, HEATHERS THE MUSICAL, AND CARRIE: THE MUSICAL MEGAN RENNER 105 Pages Both musicals and stories about teenage girls are genres that tend to be overlooked by scholars, and to not receive serious analysis. Some scholars may dismiss these genres as being shallow and unworthy of scrutiny through a critical lens. However, much may be learned about patriarchal influence on teenage girls in musicals such as Mean Girls, Heathers the Musical and Carrie: The Musical. This thesis analyzes the patriarchal influence on the teen girl characters in these three musicals, using Girl Studies and feminist theory. This study applies arguments that state that patriarchal influence is what causes girls to form cliques, in order for them to feel powerful in a world that disenfranchises them, and applies it to these musicals.

  • Emma Wahl's Statement Regarding Her WEST Fellowship Project Two
Emma Wahl’s Statement Regarding Her WEST Fellowship Project Two of my biggest passions are musical theater and helping people who are less fortunate than me. Over the years, I have been able to combine these interests by raising money for great causes like Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Children’s Miracle Network, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Two years ago, I learned about another wonderful organization called Artists Striving To End Poverty (ASTEP), which provides creative arts and AIDS education for poverty- stricken children. ASTEP has “adopted” four locations to be recipients of its programming for poor children: India, South Africa, New York City and rural Florida. ASTEP sends professional actors to work with young people who have no access or exposure to arts education. Its mission is to engage and empower these children with the goal of increasing their self-esteem and making them self- sufficient. One of the ways that ASTEP raises funds for its programs is by producing concerts featuring performances by Broadway actors and actresses. With the incredible support of ASTEP founder Mary-Mitchell Campbell and Hathaway Brown School, where I am an eighth-grader, I have been working on a unique, two-year project to produce ASTEP’s first benefit concert in this part of the country, right here in Cleveland. This event, called “For Good,” will be held on Monday, April 13, 2009, in the Performing Arts Center at Cuyahoga Community College’s Eastern Campus in Highland Hills Village, Ohio. Mary-Mitchell Campbell is one of the busiest and most well-respected music directors on Broadway.

On behalf of myself, and my producing partners Jenny Gersten, Greg Nobile, Jana Shea and Nate Koch, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop! In the spring of 1908, number 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London, became the home of Harrington’s Pie and Mash shop when it was bought by Bertie Harrington and his wife Clara. Little has changed in this tiny Tooting eatery since it first opened for business some 109 years ago. The Harrington fam- ily still run the shop, the original green tiles still adorn the walls and the menu remains unchanged since the days of Queen Victoria. A Musical Thriller Music and Lyrics Book by The idea to stage Sweeney Todd in London’s oldest pie and mash shop was one which I lived with for several years before I dared to say it out loud. It felt too outrageous, too complicated, in essence – it felt impossible. A simple ‘yes’ from Beverley Mason – owner of Harrington’s, and great STEPHEN SONDHEIM HUGH WHEELER grand-daughter of Bertie and Clara – changed everything. Subsequently, an unforgettable collabora- tion was born that set in motion a chain of events that was nothing short of extraordinary.

  • Private Romeo Movie
Title: PRIVATE ROMEO (feature film, 98mins) Writer/Director: Alan Brown Based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet When eight cadets are left behind at an isolated military high school, the greatest romantic drama ever written seeps out of the classroom and permeates their lives. Incorporating the original text of Romeo and Juliet, YouTube videos, and lip-synced indie rock music, Private Romeo takes us to a mysterious and tender place that only Shakespeare could have inspired. Cast: Seth Numrich, Matt Doyle, Hale Appleman, Chris Bresky, Sean Hudock, Adam Barrie, Bobby Moreno, and Charlie Barnett Distributors View the trailer: www.youtube.com/user/privateromeomovie Visit the website for updated news, background: www.privateromeothemovie.com/ http://www.facebook.com/pages/Private-Romeo/123162147748863 http://twitter.com/privateromeo The soundtrack features songs from the indie-rock group Bishop Allen. Listen for their hit songs, The Magpie and Busted Heart. Private Romeo is Alan’s fourth film. His first, the half-hour narrative O Beautiful (Strand Releasing, Boys Life 4), won the Future Filmmaker Award at the 2002 Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, and was an official selection of the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. It was singled out by critics as “a rare piece of film making.” His feature debut, Book of Love (Sundance Channel Home Entertainment) which stars Simon Baker, Frances O’Connor, and Bryce Dallas Howard, was praised for its “creepy eroticism and sly intelligence” and for being “a movie that feels about as real as it’s possible to be.” It was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
