PUBLISHED BY: The Church in Borrowdale. PRINTED BY: McKanes Printers, Keswick, 80574. 2 COMING SOON – A MINE OF INFORMATION! Following Lorraine Crisp’s taster view of Borrowdale's mining history at The Great Borrowdale Bake-a-Cake Off on Sunday 14th April, I was reminded how many of our dwellings in "the Dale” have close links to this story. Way back in the 1960’s, my mother, Marjorie Roscamp, went to the Crosthwaite Church records at ’s archives to research who had lived at Riggside, Grange, and found Janet Fisher in 1564 marrying one of the German miners who were brought here to help find what was in our mountains. Simon Puchberger came from Puchberg, a mining town in Lower Austria. They went to live in Stair as he was mining in Newlands and had three sons, John, Leonard and George, at whose birth in 1570, Janet sadly died. Then in April this year, Freda Chapman The mine spoil heaps are visible as you face showed me a wonderful history book Gillercombe, to the right of Sour Milk Ghyll. They run up on to Common. of 1866, listing every area in Cumberland and . The chapter about Borrowdale emphasises the importance of mines and mining at the time. “The world-famous black lead mine is situated near the hamlet of Seatoller. Its product is unequalled; no other species of native or foreign plumbago being comparable to it and it is invaluable for artistic purposes. As far back as the reign of George II an act was passed to prevent the lead from this mine being stolen, by rendering parties guilty of this offence This Wad mine marker reads ‘John Bankes Esq liable to the same punishment as for 1752’. John Bankes was the owner of the felony. mine and there were originally 5 of these.

3 In those days the valuable quality of this mineral for pencil manufacture was unknown, for the Act in question states that “it hath been found by experience to be necessary in casting of bombshells, round shot and cannon balls”. “The mine has been leased to the trustees of Mr Banks of Carfe Castle by a London company, the directors of which are well known and respected in the financial circles of the metropolis and the capital invested is £20,000. Captain Dixon the former manager of the mine has resumed his old position and an efficient staff of officials and operatives is in the course of formation and it is only fair to say that the undertaking starts under auspices which The George Hotel in Keswick. Illegal trade in whether they command or not deserve Wad, which stained your hands and clothes success”. dark grey, gave rise to the term ‘black market’. The mining story is being developed into an important and fascinating exhibition to be in St. Andrews Church in in the near future. Patricia Roscamp

4 NATIONAL TRUST UPDATE Borrowdale - the greenest valley in the ? In June we'll be starting work on the new hydroelectricity scheme at Combe Gill. This scheme is projected to generate enough electricity to supply over 200 houses. If you combine that with the existing hydropower turbines at Honister Gill (National Trust) and Lodore (privately owned), Borrowdale will probably come close to generating the same amount of green energy that's used by every household in the valley put together. National Trust hydropower schemes are 'run of the river' so we don't dam the watercourse. A set amount of water, called the 'hands off flow' will always run down the natural watercourse, we only extract 'extra' water to power the turbine. This ensures that we don't extract any water You know it's a good site during dry spells, ensuring the gill keeps flowing, for hydro power when for beauty, for recreation and for wildlife. the ground's this boggy While the scheme is being built, there will be some disruption to walkers but we intend to keep as many paths open as much as possible so please keep an eye out for information signs, machinery and temporary safety barriers. The scheme will take 12 months to build in total. The work taking place between June and September this year is to construct the intake where we'll extract the water. The real benefit of hydropower is that it requires no fuel, other than rainfall (we have plenty of that in the Lakes!) and is a relatively passive scheme that, once built, requires very little maintenance or repairs. We'll be posting regular updates about the work in progress on www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ borrowdale

5 Our AGM was held at The institute on Monday 20th May and was followed by a meeting of the Trustees. I thought you might value a synopsis: The Institute is a Charity - A Charitable Incorporated E Organisation (CIO) We can elect 7 Trustees at our AGM to serve for three years and we welcome 6 Trustees appointed by other organisations

(it is expected that they will serve for 3 years) We are able to

T Co-opt three Trustees to serve for three years. General Income during the year ending 31st March was up at £8,670 (£7,238 of this came from the Car Park). We had £26,589 in our Restoration Account at the beginning of the year ending 31st March. During this year we raised a further £38,000 between March 31st and our AGM the total in the U

Restoration Account or definitely promised to that Account,

has become £100,000. (This included £8,000 from the

Crowdfunder)

At the time of the AGM we had appeals out and being

considered for £212,808 - a percentage of these will be T successful. When the appeal is successful we shall have a restored Main I hall, porch and storage area and we shall have a secondary

entrance from the car park leading either to the hall or to the

toilets, kitchen/bar and small meeting room or via the lift and staircase to The Herdwick Suite. There are collecting boxes in all the hotels, bars, Youth

T Hostels and Camp Sites. There are plans for a big fundraiser

both in Rosthwaite and Grange before the end of the year.

Timings: We hope to be able to appoint a contractor in the

S Autumn and see builders on site in the Spring of 2020.

We are continuing to explore the essential sustainability of The Institute when it is restored and, of course, its use to enrich the lives of our community.

HOSPITALITY - last but not least The Hotel has an interesting history and is very busy. Twice a year they are the base for an unusual hunt: The 112th Trevelyan Hunt will take place on the May bank holiday weekend at Seatoller House. The hunt is a game of chase across the fells, 4 people are designated to be hares and are given a horn to blow on as sport. The rest of the group are hounds and their task is to catch the hares. The Hunt was set up by GM Trevelyan and Geoffrey Winthrop Young in 1898. The Seatoller Hotel

10 SNIPPETS Big rock fall on to the road just North of Grange Bridge . Road closed - no one hurt. If only these people read their Snippets - made it quite clear this would happen six months ago. Lavatories in Grange . Our MP is on to the job - Snippets is quite certain the working together of The Parish Council, the National Park, and National Trust is the right way forward - but if three parties are on the ball and ready to go and one is asleep it’s a bit hard. It seems to Snippets that The National Park are just not doing their stuff. walkers and worship . Could the two come together at Saint Andrew’s for twenty minutes plus a coffee on Sunday mornings at 9.30 (21st July and then weekly till 1st September) plus dogs, plus boots, plus just a modicum of enthusiasm. Snippets knows someone who is excited and waiting to go.. If your son wants to go to New Zealand for six months and if you are a farmer and if he is young and keen to learn - then off he goes. But if when he returns he seems to have turned into a rather successful second hand car dealer - well you might be surprised! Fantastic Fitzwilliam concert promised up at Saint Andrew’s 4pm July 28th. Schubert, Mozart, Hayden, Wine - more details from 017687 77671. Mass in the Mountain . 15th September - plans going ahead well. It’s free but there is only space for eighty people. Book in now - 017687 77671. Snippets was one of the first to visit Ruby and her Mother at the absolutely splendid Craft Shop up at Seatoller Farm. Worth making a special trip. Ross Harper was the Manager at Borrowdale Gates - comes from South Africa but has found himself in Borrowdale. As an act of gratitude and appreciation for this place and people he has generously given us a splendid website for The Institute . Do have a look at it - borrowdale-Institute.com
