For casual records please use our website “Sightings” page where possible. Click on sightings report on: www.cumbria-butterflies.org.uk/sightings/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- We’d welcome surveys in any of the squares listed below, but are particularly interested in those marked * and +, ie where there have been recent positive sightings well away from known colonies or discovery of possible new colonies. The areas to be surveyed fall into 3 groups, in colour below, but also suffixed (1), (2) or (3) for those with black & white printers etc. 1. Grid squares that have previous positive sightings (shown in red) (1) 2. Grid squares adjacent to the above (shown in blue) (2) 3. Grid squares that are previously unrecorded but may have potential to hold Mountain Ringlet populations (shown in green) (3) The objective of these surveys is to try to determine the geographical spread of some known colonies, but also to survey areas that have suitable geology and which may hold previously unrecorded Mountain Ringlet populations. My 214 Story Name: Christopher Taylor Membership number: 3812 First fell climbed: Coniston Old Man, 6 April 2003 Last fell climbed: Great End, 14 October 2019 I was a bit of a late-comer to the Lakes. My first visit was with my family when I was 15. We rented a cottage in Grange for a week at Easter. Despite my parents’ ambitious attempts to cajole my sister Cath and me up Scafell Pike and Helvellyn, the weather turned us back each time. I remember reaching Sty Head and the wind being so strong my Mum was blown over. My sister, 18 at the time, eventually just sat down in the middle of marshy ground somewhere below the Langdale Pikes and refused to walk any further. I didn’t return then until I was 28. It was my Dad’s 60th and we took a cottage in Coniston in April 2003. The Old Man of Coniston became my first summit, and I also managed to get up Helvellyn via Striding Edge with Cath and my brother-in-law Dave. Clambering along the edge and up on to the still snow-capped summit was thrilling. A love of the Lakes, and in particular reaching and walking on high ground, was finally born. Visits to the Lakes became more regular after that, but often only for a week a year as work and other commitments limited opportunities. A number of favourites established themselves: the Langdale Pikes; Lingmoor Fell; Catbells and Wansfell among them. I gradually became more ambitious in the peaks I was willing to take on. -

Mountains are usually steeper than hills too and have a distinct summit. Mountain Hill Did you know that the elevation of hills and mountains is measured from sea level? BACK www.planbee.com NEXT There are several different ways in which mountains can be formed. The Earth’s crust is made up of different slabs called tectonic plates. Over millions of years these plates move. When two plates collide they fold over each other, like a car crash collision, and rock is pushed upwards. This type of mountain is called a ‘fold mountain’ and is the most common form of mountain. BACK www.planbee.com NEXT Another type of mountain are ‘dome mountains’. These occur when the pressure from lots of hot magma under the Earth’s crust pushes the earth upwards into a dome without the magma pushing through the surface. BACK www.planbee.com NEXT Volcanos are also mountains. Volcanos are caused when magma (hot melted rock) erupts through the centre of the volcano and the lava cools in a cone shape. Volcanos are built up when layers of cooled lava turn to rock which build on top of each other over time. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract Since Eason’s (1957) paper on centipedes from Carnarvonshire there has been an accumulation of centipede records from various parts of Wales but relatively few are from upland areas. Recent records from Snowdonia included several species, including Lithobius (Monotarsobius) curtipes, from locations up to around 1,000m. We present a review of centipedes recorded from the 13 Welsh vice-counties which includes 41 species, 4 of which are from buildings or heated greenhouses, 4 apparently obligate halophiles from coastal sites and one doubtful. Wales has a variety of types of habitat including both lowland and montane rural areas and urban/industrial/post-industrial locations which no doubt contributes to the diversity of its chilopod fauna. Introduction The centipede Lithobius curtipes is not known in Britain from large numbers of past records, indeed in his Cotteswold paper of 1953, E.H. Eason (Eason, 1953) had referred to his record from Kildanes Scrubs, Gloucestershire in 1952 as only the third British record. The finding of it by RG at around 1,000m in Snowdonia, along with Lithobius variegatus and Strigamia acuminata at similar heights, prompted us to look at the occurrence of upland centipedes in North Wales and in Wales in general and to review the species recorded from the principality. -

Londonderry BT52 1SA, Northern Ireland (e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT Mosedale is part of the valley of the River Caldew in the Skiddaw upland of the northeastern Lake District. It possesses a diverse, interesting and problematic assemblage of landforms and is convenient to Blencathra Field Centre. The landforms result from glacial, periglacial, fluvial and hillslopes processes and, although some of them have been described previously, others have not. Landforms of one time and environment occur adjacent to those of another. The area is a valuable locality for the field teaching and evaluation of upland geomorphology. In this paper, something of the variety of landforms, materials and processes is outlined for each district in turn. That is followed by suggestions for further enquiry about landform development in time and place. Some questions are posed. These should not be thought of as being the only relevant ones that might be asked about the area: they are intended to help set enquiry off. Mosedale offers a challenge to students at all levels and its landforms demonstrate a complexity that is rarely presented in the textbooks. INTRODUCTION Upland areas attract research and teaching in both earth and life sciences. In part, that is for the pleasure in being there and, substantially, for relative freedom of access to such features as landforms, outcrops and habitats, especially in comparison with intensively occupied lowland areas. -
Watendlath Valley
WATENDLATH VALLEY A peaceful and varied walk through a traditional and small Lakeland valley. This could be a good "car free" day out but which is very flexible in length and time. Distance - About 7.5 miles /12 km taking c 3.5hours actual walking time for the whole route. Grade - Generally easy but with several short uphill sections on both on road and tracks. Some paths rough and uneven, wet in places. Access - From Keswick by the Borrowdale bus or the launch service to Ashness landing stage / Watendlath road end. By car on the B5289. Map - OS Explorer - The English Lakes - North Western - OL4 - 1: 25000 Start from the cattle grid just above the road end junction and walk steadily uphill through woodland for ten minutes. At the wall end read the plaque on the small cairn, in memory of the legendary Bob Graham. Ashness Bridge, a classic viewpoint, is now in sight. Over the bridge, continue on the road up two hill sections, passing Ashness Farm on the left. You soon reach Surprise View on the right, with a wonderful panorama across Derwentwater, Keswick and Skiddaw. The last of serious uphill!! Keep on the road through mossy mixed woods. In a few minutes bear right off the road onto a broad track leading downhill to a gate; turn right and cross the footbridge. Here turn left at the stone Indicator towards Watendlath following the riverside path. Pause at the next footbridge. In front is a small glaciated valley, the craggy sides forming the textbook U shape, with the white buildings of the hamlet in the distance. -

Perhaps the most famous is the St Mary’s Abbey, also called Melrose Abbey, a partly ruined monastery of the Cistercian order, the first of its kind in Scotland. The ruins make for a hauntingly beautiful sight, especially with moody clouds hanging low overhead. We also recommend a visit to Abbotsford House, the ancestral home of Sir Walter Scott, the famous 19th century novelist and poet, beautifully located on the banks of the River Tweed. -
