The internship consisted of the creation of a cereal network in the region of Pajottenland, Belgium, between farmers and processors. The conducted research thus had a double objective: co-developing the incipient cereal network from a practical point of view and assessing its relevance from an academic perspective. The practical outcomes for the farmers and the network have been taken as the primary goal, from the point of view that practical relevance takes precedence over theoretical relevance. The farmers, the processors and the entire cereal network have shaped and collaborated in this research. Even though there is only one author of the document, it is written in plural to include all the stakeholders that have actively participated in the research. However, whenever the explicit role of the author is discussed – and in order to improve readability – the first form singular is used. Lucas Van den Abeele Co-developing a Cereal Network ii ABSTRACT In Belgium only 15% of wheat for human consumption and less than 4% of barley used by national breweries are grown on Belgian territory. In order to overcome this shortage, farmers and processors joined hands in the region of Pajottenland, Belgium, to shape a cereal network and reorganise the local food system. Through the means of participatory action research, we studied the involvement of the farmers in co-developing the incipient network in such a way that would answer their needs and help them to overcome the lock-ins they are confronted with. The methodology was structured in three parts: learning from the past, experimenting in the present and preparing for the future. Therefore, a Farming History of Pajottenland was co-constructed with key informants, a Farmer Field School was set up and networking activities were organised. The identified lock-ins are of technical, institutional, economic, social, psychological and cognitive nature; but in addition numerous interlinkages were observed, laying bare a cluster of intertwined lock-ins within the dominant industrial food system. Different pathways to overcome these lock-ins were defined together with the farmers. Some of these were directly put into practice within the emerging cereal network, such as farmer to farmer collaboration and knowledge exchange, improving social interactions, re-establishing trust among farmers and processors, strengthening the region’s identity, and a better remuneration for all stakeholders in the cereal chain. Through our research we have shown the potential for creating a cereal to the benefit of the participating farmers and we have documented the first steps in doing so. However, after one year, we notice the vulnerability of the network in its initial phase, being highly dependent on the commitment of its early participants and its coordinator. Surrounded by agriculture, the site is listed as a historic rural landscape. The small neoclassical church is no longer in use for traditional Catholic services and is abandoned. Positioned on an isolated “island”, it has the appropriate setting to become a place to remember and part from the dead. Instigated by the municipality, and taking into account the growing demand for cremation, we present topological research on three different liturgical and spatial levels: 1/the use of the church interior as a columbarium and for (funeral) celebration, 2/the transformation of the “island”, stressing the idea of “passage” and 3/the layering of the open landscape reactivating the well-spring and its spiritual origins. Based on the reform of the funeral rite after Vatican II, we propose a layered liturgy that can better suit the wide variety of funeral services in Flanders today, while at the same time respecting its Catholic roots.

Na 15 jaar trouwe dienst wordt de VHM in de loop van 2006 omgevormd tot de VMSW, de Vlaamse Maatschappij voor Sociaal Wonen. Dat gebeurt in het kader van de grootscheepse Vlaamse overheidsreorgani- satie. 2005 is allerminst een ‘uitboljaar’ geweest. Zoals u verder kunt lezen, werden talrijke initiatieven opge- start en mogen we de cijfers en realisaties bijzonder geslaagd noemen. De rode draad doorheen heel 2005 was de ondersteuning die de VHM bood bij verschillende beleidsvoorbe- reidende projecten. Dat gebeurde steeds in nauwe samenwerking met het kabinet en de sector. Het onderzoek naar een nieuw financieringssysteem, het ontwerp van een nieuw overdrachtenbesluit en de uitwerking van het kaderbesluit sociale huur betreffen de voornaamste dossiers. Deze projecten - die al tot degelijke tussentijdse resultaten hebben geleid - gaan in 2006 verder richting eindmeet.

    The Place of Marxism in History - 1 The general historical context To understand Marxism, we must first set it in its historical context. We must understand when it was born and how it arose. We must explain its emergence and development by the interaction of social forces: their economic nature, their material interests, their ideology, the people who formulated their aspirations. In other words, we must apply the materialist interpretation of history to Marxism itself: not consider its appearance as a matter of course, but understand that it requires an explanation, and try to provide one. Furthermore determining the place of Marxism in history will enable us to outline more precisely its content and historical importance. In the last analysis, Marxism is the product of the appearance of the capitalist mode of production in certain regions of Western Europe (Northern and Central Italy, the Netherlands, England, and parts of France, Germany, Bohemia and Catalonia) beginning in the 15th and 16th centuries and leading to the emergence of a new bourgeois society that gradually came to dominate all spheres of human activity. The capitalist mode of production is based on private ownership of the major means of production and subsistence (implements, land, food) by capitalists, that is, owners of large sums of money. The latter use part of their capital to buy the labour power of another social class, the proletariat, which is compelled to sell them its labour power because it no longer has access to the means of production from which it could produce its subsistence. This antagonistic relation between Capital and Wage Labour accompanies the generalisation of commodity production (the transformation of the means of production and labour power into commodities) and is at the core of the new mode of production.
