Referee appointed for UEFA Super Cup fixture in Monaco

Scottish referee Hugh Dallas to handle Friday’s match between Europe’s champions

UEFA has appointed the match officials for the UEFA Super Cup between the UEFA Champions League winners, Real Madrid CF, and the UEFA Cup champions, Feyenoord, to be played on Friday 30 August at the Stade Louis II in Monaco, kicking-off at 20.45.

44-year-old Scottish referee Hugh Dallas has been selected to officiate at the final and his team will be completed by Irvine Wilson and David Doig, who will operate as Assistant Referees, plus Stuart Dougal, who will act as Fourth Official.

Hugh Dallas made his international debut on 14 September 1993 in a UEFA Cup match between Aalborg BK and Deportivo La Coruña in Denmark. His first senior international involving national teams was played, appropriately, in Dallas, where the United States drew 2-2 with Bolivia in March 1994.

Later that same year, he was selected for the European Under-18 Championship finals in Spain and then handled three matches – one of them Spain’s 3-2 win over Australia – during the 1996 Olympic tournament in the United States. At the 1998 World Cup finals in France, he officiated at the Belgium v Mexico and Italy v France matches, both of which ended as draws. At EURO 2000, he handled the Turkey v Italy and Norway v Yugoslavia games in Arnhem and Liège. He was then one of the referees selected for the 2001 Confederations Cup and, at the 2002 World Cup finals, he was appointed for the Portugal v Poland and Germany v United States matches and acted as Fourth Official at the final between Brazil and Germany.

At club level, this match will be his first contact with Feyenoord. On the other hand, he has officiated at four fixtures involving Real Madrid CF. The first was in September 1998, when he refereed the ‘home’ match played in Seville (the Bernabéu stadium had been closed) against Internazionale FC. He was then in Madrid in September 2000 for the 4-1 UEFA Champions League victory over RSC Anderlecht and, since then, has seen Real Madrid defeated twice by FC Bayern München: 1-0 in Madrid on 1 May 2001; and 2-1 in Munich on 2 April 2002, in the first leg of last season’s quarter-finals.
