Media Release Route de Genève 46 Case postale Communiqué aux médias CH-1260 Nyon 2 Union des associations Tel. +41 22 994 45 59 européennes de football Medien-Mitteilung Fax +41 22 994 37 37 uefa.com [email protected] Date: 29/04/2001 No. 62 - 2001 Referee appointed for UEFA Champions League semi-final Hugh Dallas of Scotland to handle Tuesday’s match at Santiago Bernabéu stadium UEFA has appointed the match officials for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid CF and FC Bayern München, to be played on Tuesday 1 May in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, kicking-off at 20.45 CET. 43-year-old Scottish referee Hugh Dallas has been assigned to the game and his team is completed by Jim McBride and Jim Dunne, Assistant Referees, plus Stuart Dougal, who will act as Fourth Official. Hugh Dallas made his international debut at a UEFA Cup match between Aalborg BK and Deportivo La Coruña in Denmark on 14 September 1993. Curiously, his third international game was outside Europe – a friendly between the USA and Bolivia played in…Dallas. He was back in the United States for the 1996 Olympic Tournament and handled the Belgium v Mexico and Italy v France matches during the 1998 World Cup finals. At EURO 2000, he handled the Turkey v Italy and Norway v Yugoslavia matches. Hugh Dallas has been the referee of five UEFA Champions League matches this season, among them Real Madrid CF’s fixture against RSC Anderlecht in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Two weeks ago, he was the referee of the UEFA Cup semi-final in Germany, when 1. FC Kaiserslautern were defeated 4-1 by the Spanish finalists, Deportivo Alavés. La sucesión de Antonio Baró significa- ba, también, un momento decisivo para la Liga Nacional de Fútbol Pro- fesional que no había vivido ningunas elecciones a lo largo de su historia. Se trataba de mantener la unidad entre todos los clubes y dar un paso al fren- te hacia los nuevos tiempos, con una organización avanzada, eficaz y preparada para dejar oír su voz en los nuevos escenarios que se plantean en el nuevo siglo. Por ello, la mayoría de nuestros clubes y S.A.D. apostaron por una presidencia profesional y a plena dedicación que supone todo un reto personal y una gran ilusión para mí y para mi equipo. My aim is to convince the leaders of European football to share my vision of football. It has been said that my vision of football is romantic or idealistic, but I believe that, in the long term, it is the right way to ensure the survival of our game and maintain its extraordinary popularity. We should not be seeking instant reward and selling our “products” to the highest bidder, but making sure that our competitions have as wide an appeal as possible and doing everything we can to ensure that they are attractive both in terms of the quality of play and results that are not a foregone conclusion. Of course, football needs money. It needs it to improve the education of coaches and, through them, the skill of players. It needs money to improve its facilities, to offer players the best possible conditions and spectators a safe and comfortable environment. It also needs money to develop grassroots football and to fulfil its social responsibilities by contributing to youth education. IN THIS ISSUE On the other hand, football has no use for profiteers, for people who, seeing how successful football is as a business, get involved for their own personal gain.
