FOOTBALL IN MALAWI

I would like to say a big thank you to Ide Green Rovers for donating a football kit to my school, St Peters, to take to Malawi with us in the summer. The Ide football kit was donated to the Chimbya village men’s team called Chitonde United who did not have any football kit. The St. Peter’s team played an 11 aside game wearing the Exeter City kit and won 3.1. This is a picture from the game.

St Peters would like to thank everyone at Ide Green Rovers FC for their help and support. Flo Herbert

3. IDE COMMUNITY SHOP AND POST OFFICE

Autumn is very much upon us with the first of the equinox storms passing through and fortunately not doing too much damage in the village other than blowing lots of leaves off the trees. If you are looking for something warming and comforting while the weather does its thing then look no further than Ide Community shop where we are selling sponge puddings, fresh Rod and Ben’s soups, as well as the usual Chunks pies and pasties which warm up beautifully. We occasionally have the larger Chunks pies which will feed a hungry family but we tend to only have them in to order. If you would like to order one please ask in the shop. We also have packs of meat from Arthur’s butchers in Topsham and if you haven’t yet tried the diced braising beef you are missing a treat. It may seem expensive but there is no waste, no fat or gristle to cut off and it is ‘melt in your mouth’ delicious.

You may have noticed that we have a new small chiller that we use to keep fresh veg and salad in the best possible condition. This has inevitably meant a change in the display units but we hope that you will be able to find what you want. It is always worth having a good look round as our stock changes over time according to the season and in response to customers’ requests.

We find ourselves in need of an accountant, is there anyone in the village or beyond who would like to keep their hand in by helping out with our accounts. All the day to day stuff is going to be taken care of by Rose and Alan Saunders but we are losing the expertise of Simon Cain who is leaving the village for pastures new. We owe a great debt of gratitude to Simon as he has been holding our hand from the very first days of Ide Community shop and he saw us through the tricky times of fund raising for our new shop. He will be a hard act to follow so, thank you Simon, we wish you well for the future.

Don’t forget the Firework display at the Poachers, you can buy your tickets in the shop.

Below are some final posting dates for the Post Office, yes it is that time again and we will shortly be taking orders for seasonal produce including the ever popular poinsettias which are grown locally and have proved to be really good plants.

5. IDE TWINNING ASSOCIATION

Greetings all and sundry, here’s an update from mission control at Ide Twinning. What exactly is Ide Twinning? newcomers to the village might ask. Well, what ‘appens is that very other year a group of us visit our ‘twinned’ village(s) in Normandy, and every other year our French friends from this village come and visit us (we alternate, in case you were thinking that they come here when we go there, that’s not what happens, that’d be silly). We do have a thoroughly good time when we visit, as we are well-fed & watered, or rather wined and dined, and have days out to local places. It’s much fun, and not only a good chance to meet people from the other side of the channel, but also a great opportunity to get to know other folk in Ide. This year it was our turn to host, and a group of our gallic friends arrived from Normandy in May, (a much smaller group than the previous visit – phew!). We had a great time taking them to local places such as the House of Marbles and the craft centre in Bovey Tracy and Knightshayes in Tiverton. The French Twinners were so pleased that they were able to able to say farewell to our dear Joyce, who was an enthusiastic Twinner ever since it came into being over 40 years ago. Next year it’ll be us taking the cross-Channel ferry (always a good game of cards to be had on the boat, with literally florins changing hands between winners and losers), and we’re all looking forward to it – come and join us, no knowledge of French language is required, just a willingness to enjoy yourself! More details will be posted nearer the time, but generally it’s around £100 per person to cover cost of ferry and coach travel. We have fund-raising events throughout the year, with monies raised going partly towards cost of entertaining our French friends, and partly to charity. Back in the summer, our stall at the annual church fete was ably manned by Dee and David Howe with Dee inventing a new game for the occasion. Dave is hoping to get the call up to host the Generation Game, as he’s heard that old Brucie has sadly passed away. He’s been looking on Ebay for ‘Reverse Grecian2000’, to get the requisite ‘silver fox’ look, but with no luck. Dee has been practising her twirls. or is it practicing? The summer BBQ on the green was another successful social evening and many; many thanks go to Sally Cooke for organising a very last minute barrel of beer. Not long after November’s Ide Times drops through your letterbox we’ll be, with the help of The Poachers Inn, staging the Ide Village Firework Display, up at the aforementioned pub on Saturday, 4 th November. We will have as many fireworks as usual, which is lots, so it’ll be rockets and whizzes and bangs and don’t bother having tea before you come out as there will be food available up there. Tickets can be bought in the Community shop and the Poachers Inn. I expect there’s a proper advert for it within these pages – if not, posters are up around the village giving more details. We also run the quizzes up at The Poachers Inn, which take place throughout the autumn, winter and spring, every three or four weeks or so. They are not po-faced and serious. Last quiz was won by a team called ‘Three Devon Bauys & a Maid’, whilst West Town Farm under-achieved – most of their team were young French lads, over to work on the farm. We showed them what a marvellously welcoming and friendly place a British pub is by putting some speedily thought-up questions on France in the quiz, but it didn’t help – they still came last, winning some noodles and a map of Italy. Perfect. It was a thoroughly heart-warming evening, and everybody was very lovely, especially the quizmaster. Next quiz is the Halloween edition on Sunday, 29 th October. It’ll be the umpteenth Halloween quiz . . . . this time, however, there will be no extra points for Halloween costume as the feedback we’re getting is that many of you are rather jaded by thinking up get-ups. There will, though, still be a prize for best- Halloweenish-dressed-team, which (thank you Tony landlord) will be fish and chips for whole team, in The Poachers. Oh and we have to tell you, as our constitution says we must, that we will be holding an AGM, which’ll be on 19 January 2018 - all welcome, 7pm, The Poachers Inn dining room, come along and meet us etc etc. Emmanuel Macron will be washing his hair. Pete Bishop

New Rector - We are delighted that our new Rector, Mike Partridge, has now taken up his position and you will find a piece about him on page 11.

Harvest Thanksgiving - Thank you to everyone who made our Harvest such an enjoyable and memorable occasion. The Church had been beautifully decorated and at the end of the Service we enjoyed a magnificent lunch. Our particular thanks to Sue Cloke and Mary Bradley for organising the lunch, which was held in Church as the Village Hall was unavailable due to refurbishment. When the Service finished some went outside to enjoy the sunshine whilst tables were erected and food arrived. It was good to have our friends from the Congregational Church with us. Our thanks too go to those kind people who cleared everything away at the end and organised the washing up.

All Age Service - At our All Age Service on the 22nd October Flo Herbert kindly gave us a most interesting illustrated talk about her trip to Malawi with St Peter's School children. It was a very poor area but everyone was so grateful for what they had, even though it was so little. Our theme was thanking God for all that we have.

Messy Church will be on Saturday, 11th November, from 10.30am, when we will be filling shoe boxes with gifts to go to disadvantaged children in Europe. We have a number of empty shoe boxes so if you can bring some small sized items, toys, colouring books, toiletries, etc. we can decorated the boxes and fill them. We will finish with a light lunch. Brenda Spivey

Mothers Union - The Autumn Council meet will meet at St James Church hall on Friday, 3rd November. All members welcome to attend. Our branch will meet on Wednesday, 22nd November, at my home, 15 Fore Street, at 2.30pm, when Marigold Seager-Berry will speak to us on "Faith in Action. I hope members will be able to come. Sue Campbell. 9. THE JUBILEE CLUB

We had a most interesting illustrated talk on the 2nd October, by David, Cooper of Freewheelers - an out of hours courier delivering urgent medical supplies. These volunteers ride around at night, and at weekends, in the dark and in all weathers on motorcycles done up like police bikes with blue lights and sirens. They receive no grants - the cost for a year is £150,000. Before 2009 four attempts were made to set us this service in Devon, but they failed through lack of money and volunteers. Then a lady in hospital needed blood, her husband was told it was not the N.H.S. but volunteers supplying the service. He sold his house to raise the money for a bike to set up Freewheelers. They mostly carry blood from the R.D.&E. Hospital around Devon, but sometimes it can be breast milk, pathology samples, human tissue, drugs, urgent equipment and surgical instruments. The Bikes are based at Honiton. There are nine bikes altogether. Bill now at Parklands - anyone able to visit would be welcome. Enid also is not very well following her fall and Peggy is not well either. We missed them. On October 16th Sue Knox came to tell us the history of Lawrence Castle. General Stringer-Lawrence and Robert Paulk, who built the tower, met in India and became great friends. Lawrence was born in Hereford, but went to work for the East India Company and became very prosperous, sending silks spices and tea back to . The ships had to travel around Africa as it was before the Suez Canal was built - the first journey took over a year . Robert Paulk lived at Lower Headborough Farm Ashburton. He became a vicar, but wanted adventure, and got a job at Fort Saint George in India. He eventually gave us his vows and became a trader for the East India Company. After 20 years in India they both came back to England. Paulk bought Haldon House in 1760. Lawrence spent much time there and after his death in 1775 was buried in Dunchideock Church. Paulk thought there should be a tribute to Lawrence and built the tower. In 1789 King George III visited Exeter and chose to stay at Haldon House. The track to the tower was a muddy so Paulk built a drive and two bridges, both to be found today, known as the King`s Drive. Paulk died in 1798. The estate was sold in 1925 and the house was knocked down leaving just one wing which is now the Lord Haldon Hotel. Lawrence Tower was sold to local businessmen, to be sold again in 1930 to Mrs Dale who lived there with her two sons and ran it as a tearoom. The tower is now run by the Devon Historic Buildings Trust, and is used for weddings, etc. The beautiful original Indian mahogany ballroom floor is still in good condition. We congratulated Ralph and Sheila Joyce on their Diamond Wedding Anniversary.

10. MIKE PARTRIDGE - New Rector of Ide, Alphington & Shillingford

I was born in Nigeria in 1961. My parents were both doctors, working in a remote mission hospital. I was raised in India, then in Birmingham, middle child with an older brother and a younger sister.

I studied geography at university, but probably spent more time playing rugby and other sports. Eventually hung up my boots in 1999. Have a love of the outdoors, hill walking, running and now mainly armchair sport. I felt a call to Christian ministry while at university, and was ordained in 1987, three weeks before marriage to Rachel. I did six years of ministry in Birmingham before landing in Tiverton in 1993, then Exeter in 2006. I never regretted moving to Devon where we raised a family of 5 children. Four of them are girls, and I love them to pieces, but I’m specially pleased to have one male ally in the family. I’m the one musical philistine in a family of stars.

Moving in to the Rectory in Alphington are: Mike, Will (17) and Felicity (12) and a ginger cat called Weasley. The three oldest have all left home. I had the happy but also tearful experience of walking Ellie down the aisle this August as she was married to Jamie. The other two girls are Hannah and Beth. I hope you’ll see all of them from time to time, but they live in London and Cambridge. Getting home to see dad doesn’t happen that often.

The last five years of life have been dominated by Rachel’s illness. She suddenly contracted leukaemia in July 2012. If you want to know more, look up “adult ALL”… a rare and deeply challenging disease. It’s a bit over a year since she died. She never wanted to talk about “losing the battle”. That’s too grim. And even though it’s the last and worst outcome… with God it’s never defeat. In that miraculous way which only God can achieve, this saddest and hardest journey of her life (and mine too) has also been the richest and most fruitful. We know now, from experience, that even though we walk through the darkest and most frightening of landscapes, God is sometimes more real at those times than when we’re relaxing in peace and comfort.

I have plenty of weaknesses. A love of curry. An inability to remember names. A fondness for sponge cake and cookies. A reluctance to do the gardening. A fascination with technology. A lack of imagination when it comes to buying birthday presents. No doubt many more which you’ll find out once you get to know me. And I’m far too polite to suggest there are any strengths or endearing qualities worth naming here!

I can’t begin to express how excited we are to be coming to service with the people of Alphington, Shillingford and Ide. It really does feel that God opened this door, and I look forward so much to waking with him and with you as we explore the journey together with Jesus. Mike Partridge 11. IDE MEMORIAL HALL

The first phase of the work being done to modernise the kitchen and toilets of your Village Hall is almost complete thanks to Amber Coast but also to many others.

The picture shows the new Hall kitchen before final fitting and tidying up. It has been a very busy month with Phil Nutley and Amber Coast builders doing a great job and we are just about there on schedule. This is despite a lot of hassle with SWW over the replacement of the lead water main which has resulted in one too many holes being dug! The finished product will effectively cover up an amazing amount of plumbing and electrical infrastructure work but I hope everyone will be pleased with what will have been achieved after the decorating, floor laying and big clean-up have been completed. We will be ready for the first post-refurbishment booking on 12 th November.

Alan Connett, our DCC councillor is doing his best to secure another £750 which will still leave us just about broke but will help a lot. Ian Campbell

13 NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF IDE LANE SURGERY

We would like to thank everyone for attending our AGM on September 28 th and for everyone’s kind raffle donations. We raised £805. Thank you to everyone who helped at the surgery Flu Clinics and at the surgery in order to raise the money and to the kind donators of gifts and prizes. At the AGM we made a number of changes. We have changed our Charity’s name to Friends of Ide Lane Surgery and we have increased our yearly membership fees from £2 to £4 a year. Dr Steve Vercoe gave a fascinating presentation on his trek in Nepal and gave us an insight into the effects of the earthquake and his family’s friendship connections with a Nepalese family. The co-ordinator outlined some yearly 2016 -2017 statistics on the transport service we offer Ide Lane Surgery patients. We currently have 17 volunteer drivers who have done an outstanding job this year. They have taken a total of 965 passengers to health appointments, undertaken 1668 journeys and travelled 5588 miles. They along with our other volunteers gave 1479 hours of their time freely to help patients at the surgery and we would like to say a big thank you for their time and commitment. We would not exist without the kind support and dedication of our volunteers. If you would like help accessing your health appointments or become a volunteer please do not hesitate in contacting us. We are organising a Volunteer Evening for 10th November at the Community Centre from 6.30 – 8.30pm. Everyone welcome. Mandy Hendley, Co-ordinator, Friends of Ide Lane Surgery.

Thank you so much to everyone who came along to our Apple and Pumpkin Day. By far our favourite open day.. This year we really wanted to get people off exploring more than just our farm yard. Our very small bull Lalo has in fact done the “job” and 11/13 cows are now in calf. I have to say we were all pretty surprised. Our straw bales are quite rough this year due to the wet weather and not properly having the chance to dry out. However the wet weather has made for brilliant hay bales, a good crop of pumpkins and loads of grass in the fields for the cows. The last calf of the season came out 3 weeks late and was a big boy!

We’ve been trying out a new style of grazing : ‘mob grazing’. This involves moving the cows on every few days or so. Grazing grass in this way is great for the health of the land but also benefits the animals and the wildlife. There is the old saying ‘ Never leave the sheep long enough in the same field to hear the church bell ring twice’.

One of our WOOFERS ‘Dylan’ has built us a fantastic new chicken shed. It’s huge and can only be moved by a tractor.

Educational visits are back and we’ve had lots of schools through the gates already. It’s nice to see the kids out on the farm and learning.

If you’re looking for a venue to book a pre Christmas get together please get in touch, we’re happy to cater for such functions. Our classroom with the log burner lit and some candles along a dinner table looks beautiful.
