Umar | The Pathway to Regionalism “The most important revolutionary force at work in the Third World today is not communism or socialism but capitalism…” Richard Robison Introduction The beginning of 2016 has marked a new phase for the regional integration project in Southeast Asia: the coming of ‘ASEAN Community’ era. By this date, all member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has agreed to transform the region into a more complex form of cooperation under one regional community. The development dates back to the aftermath 1998-1999 financial crisis, when ten ASEAN member states have agreed to give more power for its regional organisation. Since the 2nd ASEAN Summit in Bali, 2003, ASEAN member states have agreed to establish ASEAN Community by 2015, which comprises three pillar of cooperation, including political security, economic, and social cultural. The ASEAN Summit in 2015 has extended this area of cooperation into a deeper multi-sectoral basis until 2025. -

The variety of cooking methods and colourful ingredients blend together in a hot wok to create signature dishes of particular cuisines. Nevertheless, a cuisine needs to be clearly defined by definite individual characteristics so it is recognised. The primary objective of this study is to understand how Malaysian cuisine is used in marketing Malaysia as a tourist destination. Content analysis is used on selected Malaysian cuisine promotional materials such as brochures, travel guides, and webpages to extract relevant data. Results show that “close-up meal” had the highest image count from among the eight categories identified. As for text, ten categories were identified. “Creating desire” topped the list, followed by “sensory appeal”. The Malaysian Government is particular in the details selected for images of and narrative on the local cuisine. As a result, the marketing collateral could provide excitement and help tourists to anticipate the type of food experience that they can find when travelling in Malaysia. Legacies of Colonialism and Islam for Hausa Women: An Historical Analysis, 1804-1960 by Kari Bergstrom Michigan State University Winner of the Rita S. Gallin Award for the Best Graduate Student Paper in Women and International Development Working Paper #276 October 2002 Abstract This paper looks at the effects of Islamization and colonialism on women in Hausaland. Beginning with the jihad and subsequent Islamic government of ‘dan Fodio, I examine the changes impacting Hausa women in and outside of the Caliphate he established. Women inside of the Caliphate were increasingly pushed out of public life and relegated to the domestic space. Islamic law was widely established, and large-scale slave production became key to the economy of the Caliphate. In contrast, Hausa women outside of the Caliphate were better able to maintain historical positions of authority in political and religious realms. As the French and British colonized Hausaland, the partition they made corresponded roughly with those Hausas inside and outside of the Caliphate. The British colonized the Caliphate through a system of indirect rule, which reinforced many of the Caliphate’s ways of governance. The British did, however, abolish slavery and impose a new legal system, both of which had significant effects on Hausa women in Nigeria. The French colonized the northern Hausa kingdoms, which had resisted the Caliphate’s rule. Through patriarchal French colonial policies, Hausa women in Niger found they could no longer exercise the political and religious authority that they historically had held. The literature on Hausa women in Niger is considerably less well developed than it is for Hausa women in Nigeria. -

The Evolving Role of Malaysia’s Royalty By Piya Sukhani SYNOPSIS As Malaysia’s political instability continues, the royalty will take on an increasingly influential position in the country’s politics and governance. COMMENTARY PRIME MINISTER Muhyiddin Yassin has agreed to reopen the country’s suspended parliament for a five-day sitting from 26 July 2021. This comes after the Malaysian King called on 16 June for parliament to be reconvened as soon as possible. This was a contradiction of Muhyiddin’s previously proposed timeline for reopening the House by September at the earliest. The rulers have held a largely symbolic position since Malaysia’s Independence, but their role in national politics has become increasingly prominent and critical, particularly since 2020, when political fragmentation reached the point where no coalition had a clear and substantive parliamentary majority. Royalty in Politics Following Mahathir Mohamad’s abrupt resignation as premier in February 2020, King Sultan Abdullah took centre stage in seeking to resolve a week-long impasse by interviewing each of Malaysia’s 222 Members of Parliament (MPs) to determine who enjoyed a majority in parliament. -

We have made significant strides in eradicating hardcore poverty, we have developed a diversified economic base, increased the quality of life of the average citizen and created a progressive civil service which embraces change. But it is also clear that we face significant challenges to achieve the ambitious goals of Vision 2020, by the year 2020. I am confident that this Government Transformation Programme (GTP) Roadmap is what we need to help chart our path towards Vision 2020. It details a bold and unprecedented programme to begin to transform the Government and to renew the Government’s focus on delivering services to the rakyat. The scope of this GTP is broad, and will encompass every Ministry within government. -
