The Future of The Mead Lane River-Bank – Have Your Say

Mead Lane, Saltford, is a beautiful and iconic location. The river there has been used for transport and recreation for many years. Bath and North East Somerset Council owns the Mead Lane river-bank and wishes to make a decision on its long term use. An independent consultation and review has been commissioned to inform this decision. The review will reflect on the temporary mooring trial which ended last year and, im- portantly, produce a range of options for the future. Community engagement is taking place this Autumn. Key to the success of this consultation will be the extent of public participation. Bath and North East Somerset Council wishes to hear the views of Salt- ford residents and all users and potential users of the river-bank. 18 Keynsham & Saltford Dementia Action Alliance Our twice monthly Music for the Mind sessions are still being held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 10.30 until 12.15 in St Dunstan’s Church Hall in Keyn- sham. We average about 15 people with dementia at each session so with their carers and our volunteers we manage a good old sing song between us. It’s all free, just turn up and we guarantee you a very warm welcome. We regularly get residents from Kingfisher Lodge in Saltford who have been a great support to us since we started the music sessions in May 2017. We have been trying some other initiatives recently. We had somebody come in to demonstrate curling which is similar to the Olympic winter sport without the ice. At the end of the month we’re putting on a boccia demonstration which is a paralympic sport which is best described as sitting down bowls. At our session at the end of September we have invited a group from Bristol to come in and lead a guided reminiscing session with us. The aim is to stimulate discussion on a number of issues from the past that will hopefully bring back happy memories. In July we had a visit from a year 6 class from St John’s Junior School in Keynsham. They came along and sang to us for 40 minutes. This went down very well with every- one and the children enjoyed it and were happy to walk round afterwards and chat with our dementia friends. We organised a tea party in August and we sent out invita- tions to the Keynsham and Saltford dementia care homes and to our regular attendees to Music for the Mind ses- sions. We provided scones with cream and jam, cakes and refreshments and entertainment as well. Lindy, who runs our music sessions, sang for us and was accompanied by a friend on organ. The afternoon finished with everyone joining in the singing. We all enjoyed it and altogether there were about 50 people. You can always have a look at our website at www.keynshamdaa.co.uk for more infor- mation. Refugees on Samos - A personal view from Saltford Resident Anna Self Anna has been working on the Greek island of Samos to help the refugees. She says “I’d like to think that the majority of my friends and family are aware and sympathetic to the refugee crisis we face in Europe, but after returning from working in a refugee camp in Greece, I know that there are people yet to understand the severity of the situation. I’ve seen people digging through rubbish bins looking for food to eat and pregnant women turfed out of hospital one day after giving birth, having to return to a tent that is more suitable for Glastonbury than it is for living in with a newborn baby.” To find out more please email Anna at [email protected]

24 POST OFFICE & LIBRARY UPDATE The Community Library and Post Office continues to go from strength to strength and we are hugely grateful to the people of Saltford for their continued support - financial and as volunteers. Now things are up and running we are trying increase the opening hours to suit more of our users. To do that we need to recruit more volunteers to help with the library duties and greetings card sales. It is an enjoyable way to meet new people and help this project succeed. To be a volunteer no experience is necessary and you will be trained to use the simple computer/ipad systems. There are usually two volunteers working together and once we have shown you what to do you will be able to put your name on a rota to work as often as you are available. The sessions are 2½ - 3½ hours long and it works best if you can volunteer for a minimum of twice a month. If you would be interested in finding out more please visit Saltford Community Library or contact Mary Stoate at 07855 288372 or email [email protected] We are also very grateful to the Parish Council and Saltford Community Association who are prepared to financially support our plans for longer opening hours.

30 PERMISSIVE FOOTPATH DONATION APPEAL

We have now reached over £2000 towards our annual target of £3000

If you walk, run or ride a horse on any part of the 4.5km of permissive paths to the west and south of Saltford then we strongly encouraged you to support this appeal. A huge thank you to those who have already donated this year.

It needs less than another 30 people to donate an average of £25, plus Gift Aid, to reach our target. This is a small price to pay for continuing to enjoy over 4.5km of footpaths.

Without regular, annual donations from residents to cover the costs, the SCA will not be able to keep these paths open and it is highly likely that once closed they will remain closed for ever as the land will be planted with crops.

If you regularly use any of these paths and wish to donate, then please either pick up a donation envelope from Saltford Hall, Saltford Community PO/Library or go to our website where a specific section can be found at http://www.saltfordhall.co.uk/Permissive_paths.html This page provides a link to a downloadable Gift Aid form and details of how to make a donation including via Paypal. It also allows you to specifically indicate how you wish your donation to be used. We will provide a further update in the next SCAN but don’t delay as time is running out!

Saltford Neighbourhood Watch AGM

Saltford Parish Council will once again be hosting the Saltford Neighbourhood Watch AGM. Residents are invited to attend to discuss issues and concerns with members of the local Beat Team, Parish Councillors and B&NES Ward Councillors. The meeting will take place on Monday 4th November starting at 7pm, in the Avon Room at Saltford Hall. No need to book, and all residents are welcome.

Pavement parking

Following several approaches by residents about vehicle parking partially or entirely on pavements, SPC asked via social media, our noticeboard and local publications for residents to let us know problematic locations. Councillors resolved to raise awareness of the dangers of pavement parking and to request support from the police. Avon & Somerset Police Beat Officers have let us know that pavement parking is something they can deal with, and that they have visited the list of locations provided by SPC. Police will monitor these locations on an ongoing basis and deal with any offences. Going forward, residents are encouraged to call the Police via 101 to report any problematic instances of pavement parking.

This defibrillator on Beech Road recently helped to save a resident’s life. Each year in Britain over 30,000 people have cardiac arrests outside of hospital environments. There are several defibrillator locations in Saltford - you never know, this information may just save a life.

This service was authorised by King George V in 1919 when the king Remember felt, after four years of war and the untold numbers killed in on defence of freedom, the nation should at 11 o’clock on that Sunday 10th November morning, observe two minutes silence. 2019 In London on that first occasion everything stopped even the trains pulling out of Waterloo station halted on the bridge 10am St Marys Church Saltford crossing the Thames. A Time to Remember our Loved Ones On the 3rd November at 6pm in St Marys Church there will be a special service of remembrance, for all who have experienced and struggle with bereavement. The service is called A Time to Remember – because we all need a time to be still in the presence of God to remember our loved ones who are no longer with us, and to remind us that God is with us in our pain and sadness. The service is for all people, it doesn’t matter when you experienced your bereavement, it could have been recent or many years ago; if you would like to come along and hear the name of your loved one remembered in prayer, to light a candle in memory of them and to invite God to comfort you then this service is for you. We look forward to welcoming you and remembering with you.

Corston Markets - an end of an era!

The Corston Village Market is an institution and has been the foundation of mid-morning coffees, chats and bacon butties for just shy of 30 years. It was originally set up by Bette Parfrey (Gran) in 1991. In the

42 winter of 1990 All Saints Corston Church was hit by the wrath of mother nature and the roof fell in. Bette thought of ways to fundraise and got together with her fellow bell ringers to make a plan. The Village Market was born. It was set up by the bell ringers with Bette at the helm to have a monthly village market where Corstonians could come, have a coffee, have a chat and just generally be together. It started off with a cake stall, some plants, bric a brac and over the years it has grown into a family grown factory that has raised close to £60,000 since its inception. It was very important to Gran that first and foremost the market was there as a meeting place, it was somewhere where the villagers could socialise as that was something that had been missing in the village, and money raised was just a bonus.

I remember as a child helping put the bric a brac on the tables and carrying in plants from Gran's car and piling everything back into her garden shed after the market. Gran starting knitting her famous Christmas tree ornaments in July ready for the Christmas Market which were a sensation. Meetings with Mum and Gran in Gran's living room with "the book", totting up the totals of the Christmas pudding decorations and Mum telling her, you haven't knitted enough and Gran just laughing whilst scratching her head with a knitting needle! Gran used to sell hundreds of pounds worth of Christmas knitted treats well before the Christmas Market and used to get in a fluster, worrying that there wouldn't be enough for the Christmas stall because she had already sold it all! Many villagers and beyond are very lucky to have a selection of the limited-edition Bette Christmas decorations, I know I certainly am.

Gran was adamant the market would continue after she had died and we are ever grateful to Judith and Andrew Cottrell for taking over Grans legacy and becoming the head of the market. Andrews plants are amazing and his van is always full at the end of the market of deliveries of baskets and tubs to take to the villagers. Gran would be so proud of how the family have taken the market on after her passing and we often feel her with us in the village hall on a market day.

Sadly, the market will be coming to an end in its current form this December. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to make the make the market the success it has become; carrying, storing of items, setting up tables, growing plants, planting tubs, making pizzas, collecting raffles prizes - all of which take its toll and truly at the end of the markets we are all exhausted! We have appreciated all the support and help we have received over the years, but many of us are not getting any younger. We think the market has had a fantastic run and we want to end on a high. So, come and join us on 7th December as we say thank you to everyone for their support and generosity over the years and farewell to this fine Corston institution which has served us well.

PS: Watch this space as in the New Year the younger generation of Palfreys are hoping to launch something different to still enable Corstonians to get together over a cup of tea and a bacon butty!

A Holiday to Remember

My daughter Helen has lived and worked in Oregon, USA for more than 20 years. My visit to her in August was memorable but, sadly, not altogether happy.

I was there at the time of the terrible shootings in El Paso and Ohio and, from the TV reports saw the fear, anguish and anger suffered. On the other hand I experienced great kindness and compassion. During my holiday I heard from home that a lifelong friend, Dawn, had died suddenly. A colleague of Helen's asked if we would like to join him, his wife and daughter at the Mountain Home United Methodist Church where they worship.

The small, modern Church was in a beautiful setting, the congregation, mostly elderly, were friendly and welcoming. Early in the service the Pastor asked if anyone had requests for prayers and individually prayed for the people and causes mentioned, including Dawn's family. At the front of the Church was a big pile of backpacks. These had been donated by Nike and Church members had filled them with the essentials that disadvantaged children would need for the new school term. (Oregon is supportive of immigrant families and their children were probably among the recipients).

The Pastor Aric Clark (like Eric but with an A) had been to the Mexican border ministering to families divided by the draconian immigration laws and had, on a bus journey, married a couple to give them legal status. Later on my visit I heard of the rounding up of working immigrant families in Tennessee and I was left with the heart-rending sight on TV of a little girl sobbing and saying "my Daddy's not a criminal".

I have lots of tails to share, if you would like to hear more do get in touch With love, Bunty Dunford
