Judah the Maccabean is said to have sent a delegation to Rome and to have signed a friendship and defense treaty with the Republic. In any case, the first permanent Jewish settlement dates from no later than the first century B.C., although Cicero's statement in defense of Flaccus as to its size and influence was probably another of the famous orator's exaggerations. Most immigrants to Rome in the following years were freed prisoners of war who had been taken during the Roman wars in Judea by Pompey, Titus, etc. By the beginning of the first century A.D. some 8,000 Jews were said to have lived in Rome, while the Jewish population in the capitaI during the Empire has been estimated at between 20,000 and 40,000. Many settled in Trastevere, as reported by Philon when he visited Rome at the head of a delegation of Alexandrian Jews. The centre of the Jewish presence in Rome remained there for a long time in the Middle Ages, but eventually moved to the left bank of the Tiber'. The Jews of ancient Rome were citizens, and enjoyed a few additional privileges. Their languages were mainly Greek and subsequently Latin, although at least one synagogue, that of the Hebrews, apparently was frequented by Hebrew speakers. There also appears to have existed in Rome a rabbinical school, at least for a while. These enable a partial from various countries at the papal curia. The earliest known case of this reconstruction of their internai life and their living conditions, albeit to kind occurred at the end of the 6th century, when the Jews of Rome a limited degree2• intervened with Pope Gregory I on behalf of the J ews in Palermo. He kept records of income and expenses of Papal chamber connected with the campaign of Papal army that was sent from Italy to Germany by Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese) in the frame of the first period of so called Smalkaldic War (1546–1547). The author publishes this unique source in extenso and completes the edition by the detailed analysis of the incomes and expenses of this documentation. The analysis is extended by three partial texts dealing with 1) so called Jewish tax that was announced by Paul III in the financial support of military campaign, 2) credit granting of this campaign by the bank house of Benvenuto Olivieri in connection with the collection of Papal tithe in the Romagna region and 3) staffing of the commanding officers of Papal army during this campaign (in the attachment one can find a reconstruction of the officers’ staff with identification of the most important commanders). In the conclusion the author tries to determine the real motives why Paul III decided to take part in this campaign. In comparison to the previous works the author accents mainly the efforts of the Farnese family to raise their prestige at the end of the pontificate of Paul III and their immediate financial interests that are reflected in the account documentation.

Prospero Grech, O.S.A., was named by Pope Benedict XVI to the College of Cardinals on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6, 2012. On February 18, 2012, when he received the red biretta, he joined the ranks of twelve other Augustinian Friars who have served as Cardinals. This line stretches back to 1378, when Bonaventura Badoardo da Padova, O.S.A., was named Cardinal, the first Augustinian Friar so honored. Starting with the current Cardinal, Prospero Grech, read a biographical sketch for each of the thirteen Augustinian Cardinals. Friars of the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova Sebastiano Martinelli, O.S.A., the most recent Augustinian Cardinal prior to Cardinal Prospero Grech, O.S.A., served as Apostolic Delegate to the United States (1896 - 1902). While serving in this position, he made several trips to visit Augustinian sites. In 1897, while visiting Villanova, he was pho- tographed with the professed friars of the Province. Among these men were friars who served in leader- ship roles for the Province, at Villanova College, and in parishes and schools run by the Augustinians. Current Issues and Future Research1 Giorgio Caravale Università di Roma Tre In the early 1490s, Girolamo Savonarola devoted two spiritual works to the theme of prayer. These were the Sermone dell’oratione and the Trattato in difen- sione e commendazione dell’orazione mentale (1492), which were followed two years later by the Espositione sul Pater noster (1494).2 Savonarola’s criticism tar- geted the rituals and the devotional practices of the laity in their following of the precepts of Rome. In these writings, Savonarola —anticipating by two dec- ades the invective of Querini and Giustiniani’s Libellum ad Leonem decimum3— lashed out against the mechanical recital of the Lord’s Prayer and the psalms, criticising voiced prayer as an end in itself, the symbol of sterile worship. In his view, a return to the inspiring and healthy principles of the early Roman Catho- lic Church was needed, since «God seeks from us interior knowledge without so much ceremony».4 External ceremony stimulated devotion, and constituted an intermediate passage in man’s search for God. Voiced prayer should be noth- ing more than a prelude to mental prayer. Its prime purpose was to create the conditions to enable man to lift «his mind to God so that divine love and holy contemplation are ignited».5 The moment the ascendant state is attained, words become not only useless but a hindrance to communication with God. 1. Then we describe how, after Kepler’s Astronomia Nova of 1609 and the first telescopic observations by Galileo, it was in the south of France that the New Astronomy found its main promotors with humanists and « amateurs écairés », Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc and Pierre Gassendi. The professional astronomer Jean-Dominique Cassini, also from Provence, would later elevate the field to new heights in Paris. Repository: Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas at Austin Ranuzzi Family Manuscript Collection MS-03401 Scope and Contents In 1968 the Ransom Center purchased 620 volumes of manuscripts and printed matter collected by the Ranuzzi family of Bologna, Italy, that reflect some 400 years of Bolognese political, religious, and cultural life. While the collection dates from a group of medical manuscripts gathered by Antonio Ranuzzi, a physician and scholar, it was Count Vincenzo Antonio Ranuzzi (1658-1726) who was largely responsible for the formation of the Ranuzzi Library. Through the influence of his grandfather, the Marquis Ferdinando Cospi, who spent the major part of his life at the court of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, Count Ranuzzi was received in 1671 as a Page to Prince Ferdinand de Medici.

In the Introduction, the author argues that the diversity of first-generation evangelical and Protestant teaching on justification has been widely underestimated. Through a close comparison of first- and second- generation confessional statements in the Reformation period, the author seeks to establish that consensus on this issue developed slowly over the course over a period of roughly thirty years, from the adoption of a common rhetoric of dissent aimed at critiquing the regnant Catholic orthopraxy of salvation in the 1520’s and 1530’s, to the emergence of a common theological culture in the 1540’s and beyond.
