PETER’S PIKELAND UCC CHURCH HISTORY CHAPTER THREE 1883 THROUGH 2012 When recounting our history – particularly during the latter part of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries – we must recognize and commend the work of our St. Peter’s Angel, Annamae Moore. Officially we call her our Pastoral Coordinator, a role that in many ways only Annamae is uniquely qualified to serve. Our last eight pastors (Siudy, Thompson, Mackey, Langerhans, Hetrich, Lamson, Zehmer and Hanson) have been ably assisted by Annamae. She has an extraordinary bedside manner when calling on the sick or grieving families, she helps every bride with the stress of a wedding day and every Sunday assure that our worship service runs like a finely tuned watch. We thank Annamae for her tireless service and dedicate this chapter of our history to her because she has been and continues to be a major part of our church life. 2 Table of Contents A Message to Our Successors at St. Peters ..................................................................................... 5 Getting to Know St. Peter’s Pikeland in the Larger Context of the United Church of Christ ......... 7 What we believe ......................................................................................................................... 7 UCC Structure:............................................................................................................................

  • Carmelite Echoes in the Lourdes Grotto
Carmelite echoes in the Lourdes Grotto Johan Bergström-Allen When the editor of Carmel in the World asked me to write an article about the link between Carmelite spirituality and Lourdes, the famous shrine of Our Lady in south-western France, I was very happy to do so because it’s a tremendously important place in my life. I’ve been lucky enough to have gone there on pilgrimage many times, including several visits in the Jubilee Year of 2008 which marks the 150th anniversary of Mary’s apparitions to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. Carmelite friar Fr. Tony Lester, O.Carm. preaching at the Grotto in Lourdes. But before I can tell you why I think there’s a strong link between the message of Lourdes and Carmelite spirituality, there’s something I feel I have to say first: I am not a big fan of apparitions generally. There, I feel better for writing that! Let me explain… When I was a teenager (all of a decade ago), I used to be very attracted by the extraordinary (even spooky) parts of our Catholic faith. Visions, weeping statues, saints who could reveal your past and your future, stigmata, Eucharistic miracles and so on – I was fascinated by it all. And when I first came to Lourdes aged thirteen I discovered all sorts of out-of-the-ordinary things to excite me: a vision story, miraculous healings, ‘holy’ water, and enough glow-in-the-dark crucifixes and tacky religious art to fill the town’s three basilicas and numerous chapels. There’s nothing wrong with piety, of course, but it needs to be balanced and sensible.

  • BINONDO FOOD TRIP (4 Hours)
BINONDO FOOD TRIP (4 hours) Eat your way around Binondo, the Philippines’ Chinatown. Located across the Pasig River from the walled city of Intramuros, Binondo was formally established in 1594, and is believed to be the oldest Chinatown in the world. It is the center of commerce and trade for all types of businesses run by Filipino-Chinese merchants, and given the historic reach of Chinese trading in the Pacific, it has been a hub of Chinese commerce in the Philippines since before the first Spanish colonizers arrived in the Philippines in 1521. Before World War II, Binondo was the center of the banking and financial community in the Philippines, housing insurance companies, commercial banks and other financial institutions from Britain and the United States. These banks were located mostly along Escólta, which used to be called the "Wall Street of the Philippines". Binondo remains a center of commerce and trade for all types of businesses run by Filipino- Chinese merchants and is famous for its diverse offerings of Chinese cuisine. Enjoy walking around the streets of Binondo, taking in Tsinoy (Chinese-Filipino) history through various Chinese specialties from its small and cozy restaurants. • Saint Rita of Cascia Catholic.Net
Saint Rita of Cascia Catholic.net Daughter of Antonio and Amata Lotti, a couple known as the Peacemakers of Jesus; they had Rita late in life. From her early youth, Rita visited the Augustinian nuns at Cascia, Italy, and showed interest in a religious life. However, when she was twelve, her parents betrothed her to Paolo Mancini, an ill-tempered, abusive individual who worked as town watchman, and who was dragged into the political disputes of the Guelphs and Ghibellines. Disappointed but obedient, Rita married him when she was 18, and was the mother of twin sons. She put up with Paolo’s abuses for eighteen years before he was ambushed and stabbed to death. Her sons swore vengeance on the killers of their father, but through the prayers and interventions of Rita, they forgave the offenders. Upon the deaths of her sons, Rita again felt the call to religious life. However, some of the sisters at the Augustinian monastery were relatives of her husband’s murderers, and she was denied entry for fear of causing dissension. Asking for the intervention of Saint John the Baptist, Saint Augustine of Hippo, and Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, she managed to bring the warring factions together, not completely, but sufficiently that there was peace, and she was admitted to the monastery of Saint Mary Magdalen at age 36. Rita lived 40 years in the convent, spending her time in prayer and charity, and working for peace in the region. She was devoted to the Passion, and in response to a prayer to suffer as Christ, she received a chronic head wound that appeared to have been caused by a crown of thorns, and which bled for 15 years.

• St. Josaphat Basilica, Milwaukee, WI, P. 2-4. CAP at Orchard Lake
St. Josaphat Basilica, Milwaukee, WI, p. 2-4. CAP at Orchard Lake. St. Josaphat Basilica, officially designated a landmark of the city of Milwaukee, is an imposing, richly ornamented Neo-Renaissance edifice. Erected between the years of 1896 and 1901, it reflects the genius of its architect-contractor, Erhard Brielmaier. The original plans for the parish church called for a brick structure trimmed with terra cotta. While these plans were in progress, the pastor of St. Josaphat Parish, the Reverend William Grutza, learned that the old Federal Building in Chicago was to be razed and that salvaged ma- terials were up for sale. Aware of the considerable savings to be realized were such salvaged materials to be used in the construction of the new church, Father Grutza arranged for their purchase for the sum of $20,000.00. This included stone for the exterior walls, polished granite columns for the front portico, massive doors, hardware, bronze railings and light fixtures, which were transported on 500 flat cars from Chicago to Milwaukee. Inspected, measured, sorted and numbered, all these materials eventually found their place in the new fabric. The challenge thrust upon the architect, however, was immense. Mr. Brielmaier was forced to scrap his plans for the original edifice and design a church to be built entirely from the available salvaged materials. The degree of his success is measured even to this day by the Basilica as it stands, a monument to his genius. The large dome of the Basilica, a facsimile of Rome's St. Peter Basilica, was constructed with a steel framework, an architectural first in our country.

The landmark designation process begins with a staff study and a preliminary summary of information related to the potential designation criteria. The next step is a preliminary vote by the landmarks commission as to whether the proposed landmark is worthy of consideration. This vote not only initiates the formal designation process, but it places the review of city permits for the property under the jurisdiction of the Commission until a final landmark recommendation is acted on by the City Council.
