The children had a busy week settling into school life and finding their way around their new classroom. Each Grade 1 pupil is assigned a 'buddy' who looks after them and provides them with a helping hand. We look forward to the special journey we are embarking on and hope your little ones are as excited as we are! TEAM SPRINGVALE HOUSE D BLOCK BASECAMP All our new D Block (Form 1) pupils participated in the Basecamp Expedition, organized by Outward Bound Zimbabwe, at the very beginning of term. The goal of the Basecamp is to help the pupils come together as teams, within their year groups and Houses. The method employed is to put them into situations that stretch them, force teamwork, push them out of their comfort zones, and enable them to learn to appreciate and value their various differences and strengths. From the 25km hike, spread over an afternoon and a morning, with a night camping in between, cooking their own food, to complex challenges, the pupils were constantly on the go and focused on the various tasks. Each team undertook a series of learning activities, covering basic outdoor survival and etiquette. They learned how to light a fire and keep it controlled in the outdoors, how to pack a hiking rucksack, how to plan and prepare meals, how to navigate a route using GPS, how to put up and pack down their tents, and about some basic first aid. After these sessions, some groups kitted up and started their GPS-guided hike towards Ruzawi School. The hike was through some beautiful country, with stop points where the hikers could cool down with a dip in a dam and swim or dip feet into a gentle waterfall. Meanwhile other groups engaged in a range of team-building and challenging activities (such as abseiling, raft building and outdoor puzzle games designed to stretch team planning, interaction and relationships). It was truly evident that in just four short days, they had grown and learnt a lot about themselves and each other. Earlier this term, Peterhouse hosted twenty-two pupils DANISH CULTURAL EXCHANGE from Odsherreds Efterskole in Denmark. This takes place every year in the Lent term as part of a Cultural Exchange Program. During these visits; a great deal of cultural and academic experiences are shared by pupils and teachers. Other objectives of this program are to expose our pupils to people from different cultural, religious, geographic and socio-economic backgrounds and in so doing provide the opportunity for pupils to develop a greater understanding of diversity - both in Africa and worldwide. Some of the activities included a visit to Imire Game Park, a guided visit of Harare and the surrounding areas and a night in our very own Gosho Park. They also visited St Francis School and Musha we Vana Orphanage where they donated much needed school stationery. SWIMMING AT THE CANA CHAMPS Our swimmers performed very well at the CANA Zone IV Swimming Championships that took place in Botswana. Zimbabwe amassed a total of 85 medals consisting of 34 Gold, 31 Silver and 20 Bronze out of the fourteen Zone III countries present. Zimbabwe won the boys and girls section and came 1st overall. Well done to our pupils below on their achievements: Courtney Brown (Zimbabwe): 2 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals; 1 Bronze Medal and 4th place finish, 3 relays – 3 Gold Medals, Girls Co- Captain. Timea Schultz (Zimbabwe): 4 Gold Medals, 1 Silver Medal; 1 Bronze Medal, 4 relays – 4 Gold Medals, Girls 13/14 years’ Victrix Aggregate Winner. Brandon Rouse (swimming for Botswana): 1 Bronze Medal, 1 relay – 1 Bronze Medal. Temwani Chibiya (swimming for Zambia): 8 individual events, 6 personal bests. LEARNER GUIDES MURURU COURSE This year’s Mururu Learner Guide course saw a number of past and present Peterhouse pupils in attendance which was great and al- lowed them to network and share knowledge about the industry. Daniel Woods (presently VI Form), Shannen Wilson (left last year), Liam Robinson (left 2018), Luke MacDonald (external pupil for 6 weeks), Dylan Browne (now into his fourth year of apprentice- ship), and David Langerman (left 2001 (Head of School) now a fully qualified Professional with his own conservation company who is giving back to the community. SPRINGVALE HOUSE ASSEMBLY PLAYS WINNING GOLD AND SILVER AT THE RSA ROWING CHAMPS Our young rowers went to the South African Junior Rowing Champs, held at Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria, in March. A great deal of hard work and effort went into getting our athletes ready to compete and our team of parents and support staff were phenomenal. All our athletes did very well and have come away richer from the experience and the high levels of competition. Of particular note were Kayla Kalweit and Genevieve Shoesmith. Kayla managed to achieve a Gold in the Under 16 single scull race, and Genevieve and Kayla achieved a Silver Medal in their Under 16 double scull. Emmanuel Nyamupingidza and Reagan Evans also did well. They both narrowly missed a Bronze Medal in the Under 16 double scull race, doing very well to come in fourth. The competition was stiff, and our athletes have a good idea of what is needed to get ready for RSA Champs 2021. BIRDS @30 MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE After their Eisteddfod performance, the Grade 1s and 2s went to Birds@30.

1948 The Standard Bank Limited, Victoria Falls 1973 THOMAS MEIKLE, 1864-1939 The founder of the Meikle Organisation sailed from Scotland with his parents in 1869. The family settled in Natal where Thomas and his brothers John and Stewart gained their first farming ex perience. In 1892 the three brothers set off for Rhodesia with eight ox- wagons. Three months later they had completed the 700 mile trek to Fort Victoria. Here they opened a store made of whiskey cases and roofed over with the tarpaulins that had covered their wagons. Progress was at first slow, nevertheless, branches were opened in Salisbury in 1893, Bulawayo and Gwelo in 1894, and in Umtali in 1897. From these small beginnings a vast network of stores, hotels, farms, mines and auxilliary undertakings was built up. These ventures culminated in the formation of the Thomas Meikle Trust and Investment Company in 1933. The success of these many enterprises was mainly due to Thomas Meikle's foresight and his business acumen, coupled with his ability to judge character and gather around him a loyal and efficient staff. His great pioneering spirit lives on: today the Meikle Organisation is still playing an important part in the development of Rhodesia. THOMAS MEIKLE TRUST AND INVESTMENT CO. (PVT.) LIMITED. Brief history In 2009 Lloyd and I did a journey with our horses around South Africa to raise awareness of African Horse Sickness. African Horse Sickness is a virus disease endemic to Africa and many horses die from it every year. This journey took 581 days and we covered 7411km’s and whilst travelling and living alongside our horses, going at their pace, they had become the non-judgemental barometers of our lives and changed us forever. The further we travelled the more aware we became of our horses, ourselves and the land we were riding through which made us deeper connected to everything. That is why we started our non- profit company Earth Awareness NPC, which is about encouraging environmental awareness and education from an early age. When we returned to our horse trail business based on a reserve in the Eastern Cape in 2011, we were hit by a shocking and sad reality. The 11 rhino that used to live on that reserve had been killed and this sparked a fury of anger, sadness and along with a feeling of complete helplessness.

  • The Story of the Origins of the Aloe Cactus & Succulent Society of Zimbabwe
The story of the origins of the Aloe Cactus & Succulent Society of Zimbabwe Hans Wolbert Greetings gardeners and fellow succulent enthusiasts I am going to try and give a piece of the history of our club. I have gathered information from as many historical papers that I could find and of course there are gaps which I will not try to fill with guess work. It all started with a handful of people of different background, knowledge and skills, but, with the shared interest in the hypnotising beauty and diversity of our country’s succulent species. One can imagine these people at one stage or the other walking around the mountains and bushveld of our beloved country under the magic of sub-tropical Africa, with the sun on their backs and open bushland in front of them. One can also imagine that in a quiet moment their attention focusses on the beauty of an aloe or succulents in their natural habitat, and that interest they take home with them. In the late 1940s a national Cactus and Succulent Society did exist although there is very little information from that. The members of that society joining a Botanical society in the area which flourished for a few years and then faded away. Then there was Emden (Dan) Pienaar with his wife Shirley who was interested in succulents who put an advertisement in the Herald on the 8th of February 1969 inviting other interested people to form an Aloe and Succulent Society to contact him. A meeting was arranged at the house of Mike Kimberly at 15 Cheshire Road Avondale.
