Proceeding The 3rd International Seminar on Social Studies and History Education (ISSSHE) 2018 LIVE OF COASTAL PEOPLES IN THE MALACCA STRAITS Azmi Fitrisia [email protected] Universitas Negeri Padang Abstract : The article aims to reveal the coastal peoples in the Malacca Straits from pre- history to colonialism. Especially, the characteristics and social stratification of the peoples. This is very interesting because many articles have viewed that the development of marine fisheries occurred in the colonial period. The written wants to refute this view. The paper used the local and colonial data; Dutch and British reported. Even so, the criticism method will be very strict on government data because often government interests arise. The findings of the paper indicate that before the colonial in the east coast of Sumatra arrests were carried out by indigenous people or local communities. The social stratification of the coastal community is following the ownership of the fishing equipment which is generally held by the nobility and the important people of the kingdom. Fishing is carried out along the coast and in the Malacca Straits. The fresh fishes and the product of fishery industries have become trading commodities in the Malacca Straits. HUBUNGAN KESULATANAN MELAKA DENGAN KERAJAAN RYUKYU JEPUN Hashim Bin Musa, Dr. Prof. Emeritus Jabatan Bahasa Melayu Fakulti Bahasa Moden dan Komuniakasi, UPM [email protected], [email protected] Abstrak Kesultanan Melaka pada zaman kemuncaknya dalam abad 14M dan awal 15M merupakan sebuah karajaan maritim yang bertaraf dunia. Bandar pelabuhan Melaka dikunjungi 2000 kapal dan perahu setiap hari dari Asia Tenggara, dari dunia barat dan dunia timur. Terdapat di sana 100,000 manusia yang bertutur 84 bahasa, di mana orang-orang Gujrat, Tamil, Bengali dari India berinteraksi dan berdagang dengan bangsa Melayu, China, Arab, dan lain-lain. Terdapat dua jalan dari dunia barat ke timur; iaitu jalan darat dari Eropah ke timur melalui Baghdad, Tashkent melintasi negara China sehingga ke pelabuhan Guangzou yang dianggap sebagai jalan sutera daratan (land silk road), dan satu lagi ialah jalan laut dari Eropah melalui Mesir, negara Arab, India, Melaka, Siam dan ke China yang dianggap sebagai jalan sutera lautan (maritime silk road), dan Melaka terletak di tengah-tengah perjalanan laut itu. Penjelajahan Hang Tuah ke 14 buah negara secara simbolik melambangkan jaringan Melaka dengan negara-negara utama dunia pada masa itu. Hubungan Melaka dengan China, Siam, dan India telah banyak diketahui, namun hubungan Melaka dengan kerajaan Ryukyu Jepun belum lagi diperkatakan dengan mendalam. Kertas ini akan menghuraikan secara ringkas surat-surat perutusan antara kerajaan Melaka dengan kerajaan Ryukyu, iaitu bermula sekitar tahun 1463 hingga 1511. Dalam Rekidai Hõan, iaitu catatan rasmi kerajaan Ryukyu yang masih tersimpan di Muzium di Okinawa, terdapat 19 pucuk surat daripada Ryukyu dan 11 daripada Melaka. Antara surat daripada Melaka terdapat tiga pucuk surat yang boleh dikaitkan secara langsung dengan Laksamana Hang Tuah; dua surat itu bertarikh 1480 dan satu surat lagi bertarikh 1481, iaitu zaman Sultan Alauddin Ri‟ayat Shah memerintah Melaka. -

A Regional Guide to Books Published by The Hakluyt Society INDIA Compiled by Lionel Knight1 Introduction With the choice of Magellan’s ship, the Victoria, as their logo, the founders of the Hakluyt Society confirmed their international intentions. The authors of the works reviewed below range from Iceland to Russia, and British travel accounts only appear later in the chronological sequence of volumes, and remain, overall, a minority. Since they mainly come from the era of European maritime expansion, it is unsurprising that there are few Asian authors – an Arab / Berber, two Persians and a Chinese – and only one Asian editor. The Society had put the emphasis on ‘voyages’ rather than exploration. So, this Regional Guide, whose subject is India, is open to the objection that it has sliced into the intentions and world-views of many travellers and their promoters. Since antiquity, the Arabian Sea had been a trading zone, and it was the achievement of the Portuguese to link the old local understanding of the wind systems with those of the more difficult Atlantic. There was another established trading system in the Bay of Bengal and beyond. This, also, was important to the Europeans since they needed Indian goods to buy the south-east Asian spices which were in such demand at home. However, this Guide focuses on their understanding and transmission of knowledge about the Indian subcontinent which was the cynosure of most of the voyages. Consequently, some volumes will appear also in other Guides, covering Africa and the Far East or, in the case of Vasco da Gama, in The Southern Voyages and the Antarctic. -

TEKNOLOGI PERKAPALAN MELAYU TRADISIONAL: JONG DAN GHALI MEREDAH TUJUH LAUTAN HASHIM BIN MUSA1 ABSTRAK Peradaban Melayu lama dengan lokasi petempatannya di kepulauan Melayu merupakan peradaban maritim sesuai dengan kedudukannya yang strategik di persimpangan jalan perdagangan laut antara dunia Barat dan dunia Timur. Lokasi petempatan dan pemerintahannya berpusat di bandar-bandar pelabuhan utama di wilayah ini. Sistem peniupan angin monsoon yang bertiup dengan berbeza arah pada musim panas dan musim sejuk dan ketiadaan angin pada antara dua musim itu, membawa kapal daripada arah yang berbeza-beza, dan semasa ketiadaan angin mereka terpaksa tinggal di pelabuhan yang memberi peluang bagi para pedagang untuk menjalankan urusan mereka. Kapal dan perahu tentu sekali memainkan peranan yang penting dalam suasana perdaganan maritim demikian, dan sejak awal lagi pedagang maritim Melayu telah menggunakan pelbagai jenis kapal untuk menjalankan perdagangan itu. Artikel ini akan menelusuri dua jenis warisan kapal orang Melayu yang digunakan dalam aktiviti perdagangan dan kegiatan maritim pada zaman lampau; iaitu Jong dan Ghali jenis kapal besar bagi penjelajahan di lautan luas dan antara benua. ABSTRACT (ENGLISH) The Malay civilization in the past, located in the Malay Archipelago, was a maritime civilization, being strategically situated midway between the trade sea routes of the western and eastern trading nations. Centres of population and government were found in the major city ports of the region. The variation of the monsoonal winds that blow from the west to the east during summer months and from the east to the west during the winter months, helped to bring ships from different regions.
