The final instalment in Tim Pears's spellbinding chronicle of love, exile and belonging in a world on the brink of change

Description The final instalment in Tim Pears's spellbinding chronicle of love, exile and belonging in a world on the brink of change

It is 1916. The world has gone to war, and young Leo Sercombe, hauling coal aboard the HMS Queen Mary, is a long way from home. The wild, unchanging West Country roads of his boyhood seem very far away from life aboard a battlecruiser, a universe of well-oiled steel, of smoke and spray and sweat, where death seems never more than a heartbeat away.

Skimming through those West Country roads on her motorcycle, Lottie Prideaux defies the expectations of her class and sex as she covertly studies to be a vet. But the steady rhythms of Lottie's practice, her comings and goings between her neighbours and their animals, will be blown apart by a violent act of betrayal, and a devastating loss. In a world torn asunder by war, everything dances in flux: how can the old ways life survive, and how can the future be imagined, in the face of such unimaginable change' How can Leo, lost and wandering in the strange and brave new world, ever hope to find his way home' The final instalment in Tim Pears's exquisite West Country Trilogy, The Redeemed is a timeless, stirring and exquisitely wrought story of love, loss and destiny fulfilled, and a bittersweet elegy to a lost world.

Description 'Forna's voice is relentlessly compelling, her ability to summon atmosphere extraordinary ... A thing of lasting beauty' Observer

Waterloo Bridge, London. Two strangers collide. Attila, a Ghanaian psychiatrist, and Jean, an American studying the habits of urban foxes. From this chance encounter in the midst of the rush of a great city, numerous moments of connections span out and interweave, bringing disparate lives together. Attila has arrived in London with two tasks: to deliver a keynote speech on trauma and to check up on the daughter of friends, his niece', Ama, who hasn't called home in a while. It soon emerges that she has been swept up in an immigration crackdown and now her young son Tano is missing. When, by chance, Attila bumps into Jean again, she joins him in his search for Tano, mobilizing into action the network she has built up, mainly from the many West African immigrants working London's myriad streets, of volunteer fox- spotters: security guards, hotel doormen, traffic wardens. All unite to help and as the search continues, a deepening friendship between Attila and Jean unfolds. In this delicate yet powerful novel of loves lost and new, of past griefs and of the hidden side of a teeming metropolis, Aminatta Forna asks us to consider the values of the society we live in, our co-existence with one another and all living creatures and the true nature of happiness.

Bloomsbury Pb AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Folk Zoe Gilbert

Dark, magical and unsettling, Folk is a work of breathtaking imagination which explores the remote, unforgiving village of Neverness and it's singular inhabitants. For fans of Angela Carter, Sarah Perry and Daisy Johnson

Description Sinuous and unsettling, dark and magical, Folk is a breathtaking collection of stories exploring the remote, rocky island of Neverness and it's singular inhabitants. For fans of Angela Carter, Sarah Perry and Daisy Johnson

Come back now, up the rocks that loom above the shore, to where the men and women of Neverness wait with their torches. The sky above their heads is showing the first stars. The door of the day is nearly shut, but this is the hinge of the year itself. Days are shrinking, nights spreading.

On a remote and unforgiving island lies a village unlike any other. Here in Neverness a girl might be snatched by the waterbull and dragged to his dark lair, and Jack Frost can take his chilling revenge on a jealous sister. A babe is born with a wing for an arm, and children ask their fortunes of an oracle ox. The beliefs and rituals of the islanders conjure their own dark spirits, flying with the red kites at night or stalking lustful boys through the gorse mazes. While the islanders live out their own tales, magic always lurks, blighting and blessing lives in equal measure. Folk is a piece of exquisite writing in which stories interweve over the course of one generation of islanders. The folklore of Neverness is as tangible as its rocky shore, its deep woods and its gorse-prickled headland. In this world remote from our time and place, the tales the islanders tell in the village bard house come to life around them, twisting fates and changing lives.

Bloomsbury Pb AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Sakhalin Island Anton Chekhov

Highly valuable both as a detailed depiction of the Tsarist system of penal servitude and as an insight into Chekhov's motivations and objectives for visiting the colony and writing the expose

Description In 1890, the thirty-year-old Chekhov, already knowing that he was ill with tuberculosis, undertook an arduous eleven-week journey from Moscow across Siberia to the penal colony on the island of Sakhalin. Now collected here in one volume are the fully annotated translations of his impressions of his trip through Siberia and the account of his three-month sojourn on Sakhalin Island, together with his notes and extracts from his letters to relatives and associates. Highly valuable both as a detailed depiction of the Tsarist system of penal servitude and as an insight into Chekhov's motivations and objectives for visiting the colony and writing the expose, Sakhalin Island is a haunting work which had a huge impact both on Chekhov's career and on Russian society.

About the Author Anton Chekhov (1860 1904) is one of the giants of modern literature, exerting a strong influence on many present-day novelists and dramatists. As a playwright, he ranks in popularity second only to Shakespeare in the English-speaking world. As a prose writer, he was one of the first to use the stream-of-consciousness technique, and his anti-heroic realism, full of ambiguity and allusion, provides no easy moral conclusions and results in a new kind of narrative approaching real life in a way no writer had achieved before him.

From Endymion and Hyperion to The Eve of St Agnes', La Belle Dame sans Merci' and the Odes, this collection, which presents Keats's oeuvre in chronological order, displays his rapid poetic growth, the development of his philosophical and spiritual beliefs and the voluptuous, silken nature of his verse.

Description Already with thee! tender is the night, And haply the Queen-Moon is on her throne, Cluster'd around by all her starry Fays; But here there is no light, Save what from heaven is with the breezes blown Through verdurous glooms and winding mossy ways. Despite his tragically short life, John Keats, a self-confessed rebel Angel , endures for many as a personification of the Romantic age. While contemporary critics mocked him as a Cockney poet and an uneducated lower-class apothecary who aspired to poetry, subsequent generations began to see and appreciate both the rich and impassioned sensuousness and the love of beauty and liberty that pervade his work.

About the Author Though little known in his own lifetime, John Keats's (1795 1821) hope that he might be considered among the English poets after his death has come to pass, and he is now considered one of the foremost poets of English literature. Keats died of consumption in Rome, with financial worries and the loss of many of those he loved most having plagued his short life.

Winner of the Jane Grigson Trust Award 2018, this vibrant book discovers how vinegars can be your secret weapon in the kitchen

Description WINNER OF THE JANE GRIGSON TRUST AWARD, 2018 From food writer and historian Angela Clutton comes The Vinegar Cupboard, demonstrating the many great ways vinegars can be used to balance and enhance flavours, and enable modern cooks to make the most of this ancient ingredient. There aren't too many ingredients which manage to bring flavour and adaptability to recipes and are actively good for you, but vinegar manages it, and this must-have new book looks at how they have woven their way through culinary and medical history for thousands of years, and highlight the ways we can all benefit from vinegar in our diet. There is a growing interest in vinegars and a recognition of the role acidity plays in cooking, and within these page, Angela Clutton shows how much can be achieved using just red or white wine vinegar in your cooking, as well as exploring the vast array of vinegars available. The range of vinegars on the market are expanding rapidly, and you can easily find fruit, herb, sherry, cider, malt, rice, balsamic and many types of red and white wine vinegars (from rioja through to champagne) on your supermarket shelves. Absolute Press AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 The Price We Pay Martin Makary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Unaccountable comes an eye-opening, urgent look at America's broken health care system--and the people who are saving it.

Description From the New York Times bestselling author of Unaccountable comes an eye-opening, urgent look at America's broken health care system--and the people who are saving it.

One in five Americans now has medical debt in collections and rising health care costs today threaten every small business in America. Dr. Makary, one of the nation's leading health care experts, travels across America and details why health care has become a bubble. Drawing from on-the-ground stories, his research, and his own experience, The Price We Pay paints a vivid picture of price-gouging, middlemen, and a series of elusive money games in need of a serious shake-up. Dr. Makary shows how so much of health care spending goes to things that have nothing to do with health and what you can do about it. Dr. Makary challenges the medical establishment to remember medicine's noble heritage of caring for people when they are vulnerable.

The Price We Pay offers a roadmap for everyday Americans and business leaders to get a better deal on their health care, and profiles the disruptors who are innovating medical care. The movement to restore medicine to its mission, Makary argues, is alive and well--a mission that can rebuild the public trust and save our country from the crushing cost of health care.

About the Author Marty Makary, MD, MPH, is a surgeon and Professor of Health Policy at Johns Hopkins University and the author of the New York Times bestseller, Unaccountable. Bloomsbury AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Engines of Privilege David Kynaston & Francis Green

A rigorous, compelling and balanced examination of the British private school system and the lifetime inequalities it entrenches

Description Britain's private, fee-paying schools are institutions where children from affluent families have their privileges further entrenched through a high-quality, richly resourced education. There is an irrefutable link between private schools and life's gilded path: private school to top university to top career. Engines of Privilege contends that, in a society that mouths the virtues of equality of opportunity, of fairness and of social cohesion, the educational apartheid separating private schools from our state schools deploys our national educational resources unfairly and inefficiently; blocks social mobility; reproduces privilege down the generations; and underpins a damaging democratic deficit in our society.

Intrinsic to any vision of the future of Britain has to be the nature of our educational system. Yet the quality of conversation on the issue of private education remains surprisingly sterile, patchy and highly subjective.

Francis Green and David Kynaston carefully examine options for change, while drawing on the valuable lessons of history. Accessible, evidence-based and inclusive, Engines of Privilege aims to kick-start a long overdue national debate. Clear, vigorous prose is combined with forensic analysis to powerful effect, illuminating the painful contrast between the importance of private schools in British society and the near-absence of serious, policy-shaping debate.

About the Author Francis Green is Professor of Work and Education Economics at the UCL Institute of Education. He is the author of ten books and 150 papers, and is a recognised authority on the economic and social effects of private schooling in the past and present. He also works as an occasional adviser to the European Foundation for Living and Working Conditions, the OECD and the World Bank. David Kynaston has been a professional historian since 1973 and has written twenty books, including on the City of London and cricket, as well as a series aiming to cover the history of post-war Britain (1945 79), 'Tales of a New Jerusalem'. He is currently an honorary professor at Kingston University. Bloomsbury Pb AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Political Tribes Amy Chua

From international bestselling author Amy Chua, a bracing and original look at the tension between our tribal instincts and our democratic political ideals

Description 'A beautifully written, eminently readable and uniquely important challenge to conventional wisdom' J. D. Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy

Never has our society felt more divided.

In Political Tribes, Amy Chua diagnoses the cause of our current political discord: tribalism. In many parts of the world, the group identities that matter most the ones that people will kill and die for are ethnic, religious, sectarian or clan-based. Time and time again our blindness to tribalism has undermined our foreign policy.

At home, we have recently witnessed the rise of identity politics, a movement that encourages us to define ourselves against, and thereby exclude, others. The shock results of the US election and the Brexit referendum show that tribalism is a social truth that we ignore at our peril. When people are defined by their differences to each other, extremism becomes the common ground, and the grand ideals of democracy have a hard time competing with a more primal need to belong.

If we are to transcend our political tribes, we must rediscover a broader, more nuanced unity that acknowledges the reality of our group differences. Insightful, challenging and provocative, Amy Chua's groundbreaking book could not be more timely.

About the Author Amy Chua is the John Duff Jr. Professor of Law at Yale Law School. She is the author of World on Fire, Day of Empire, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, and The Triple Package (with Jed Rubenfeld) and is a noted expert in the fields of international business, ethnic conflict, and globalization. Bloomsbury Pb AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Fair Shot Chris Hughes

Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes makes the case that one percenters like him should pay their fortune forward in a radically simple way: a guaranteed income for working people

Description Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes makes the case that one percenters like him should pay their fortune forward in a radically simple way: a guaranteed income for working people The first half of Chris Hughes' life followed the perfect arc of the American Dream. He grew up in a small town in North Carolina. His parents were people of modest means, but he was accepted into an elite boarding school and then Harvard, both on a scholarship. There, he met Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz and became one of the co-founders of Facebook.

In telling his story, Hughes demonstrates the powerful role fortune and luck play in today's economy. Through the rocket- ship rise of Facebook, Hughes came to understand how a select few can become ultra-wealthy nearly overnight. He believes the same forces that made Facebook possible have made it harder for everyone else in America to make ends meet.

To help people who are struggling, Hughes proposes a simple, bold solution: a guaranteed income for working people, including unpaid caregivers and students, paid for by the one percent. Hughes believes that a guaranteed income is the most powerful tool we have to combat poverty. Money cold hard cash with no strings attached gives people freedom, dignity and the ability to climb the economic ladder.

A guaranteed income for working people is the big idea that's missing. This book, grounded in Hughes' personal experience, will start a frank conversation about how we earn, how we can combat income inequality, and ultimately, how we can give everyone a fair shot.

Between the death of Queen Victoria and the outbreak of the First World War, while the patriarchs of the Liberal and Tory parties vied for supremacy in parliament, the campaign for women's suffrage was fought with flair and imagination in the public arena. From their marches on Parliament and 10 Downing Street, to the selling of their paper, Votes for Women, through to the more militant activities of the Women's Social and Political Union, whose slogan 'Deeds Not Words!' resided over bombed pillar-boxes, acts of arson and the slashing of great works of art, the women who participated in the movement endured police brutality, assault, imprisonment and force-feeding, all in the relentless pursuit of one goal: the right to vote.

From the #1 NYT bestselling author of Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant', Roz Chast, an 'absolutely laugh- out-loud hysterical' (AP) illustrated ode/guide/thank-you to Manhattan.

New Yorker cartoonist and NYT bestselling author Roz Chast, native Brooklynite-turned-suburban commuter deemed the quintessential New Yorker, has always been intensely alive to the glorious spectacle that is Manhattan--the daily clash of sidewalk racers and dawdlers, the fascinating range of dress codes, and the priceless, nutty outbursts of souls from all walks of life. For Chast, adjusting to life outside the city was surreal (you can own trees!' you have to drive!'), but she recognized that the reverse was true for her kids. On trips into town, they would marvel at the strange visual world of Manhattan--its blackened sidewalk gum wads, 'those West Side Story things' (fire escapes)--its crazily honeycombed systems and grids. Told through Chast's singularly zany, laugh-out-loud, touching, and true cartoons, Going into Town is part New York stories (the 'overheard and overseen' of the island borough), part personal and practical guide to walking, talking, renting, and venting--an irresistible, one-of-a-kind love letter to the city.

Bloomsbury AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Hitler in Los Angeles Steven J. Ross

(Hitler in Los Angeles) is part thriller and all chiller, about how close the California Reich came to succeeding (Los Angeles Times).

Description A 2018 FINALIST FOR THE PULITZER PRIZE

(Hitler in Los Angeles) is part thriller and all chiller, about how close the California Reich came to succeeding (Los Angeles Times).

No American city was more important to the Nazis than Los Angeles, home to Hollywood, the greatest propaganda machine in the world. The Nazis plotted to kill the city's Jews and to sabotage the nation's military installations: Plans existed for murdering twenty-four prominent Hollywood figures, such as Al Jolson, Charlie Chaplin, and Louis B. Mayer; for driving through Boyle Heights and machine-gunning as many Jews as possible; and for blowing up defense installations and seizing munitions from National Guard armories along the Pacific Coast. U.S. law enforcement agencies were not paying close attention--preferring to monitor Reds rather than Nazis--and only attorney Leon Lewis and his daring ring of spies stood in the way. From 1933 until the end of World War II, Lewis, the man Nazis would come to call the most dangerous Jew in Los Angeles, ran a spy operation comprised of military veterans and their wives who infiltrated every Nazi and fascist group in Los Angeles. Often rising to leadership positions, they uncovered and foiled the Nazi's disturbing plans for death and destruction. Featuring a large cast of Nazis, undercover agents, and colorful supporting players, the Los Angeles Timese- bestselling Hitler in Los Angeles, by acclaimed historian Steven J. Ross, tells the story of Lewis's daring spy network in a time when hate groups had moved from the margins to the mainstream.

Bloomsbury Pb AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Borrowed Time: The Science of How and Why We Age Sue Armstrong

Uncovering the science behind how and why we age

Description Like time', everyone knows what ageing is until we try to pin it down. When does it begin' How does it happen and why' What lies ahead for each of us individuals, and would we want to live forever, given the option' The question of how and why organisms age has teased scientists for centuries, yet there is still no agreement. There are a myriad of competing theories, from the idea that ageing is a simple wear and tear process, like the rusting of a car, to the belief that ageing and death are genetically programmed and controlled. In fact, there is no clearly defined limit to life, and no single, predictable programme playing itself out: different things are happening within and between tissues, and each system or organ accumulates damage at its own pace, according to the kind of insults imposed on it by daily living. Sometime before 2020, the number of people over sixty-five worldwide will, for the first time, be greater than the number of 0-4 year olds; and by 2050 there are likely to be 2.5 times as many older people in the world as toddlers. With statistics like these, society is understandably preoccupied with the greying of the world', and there is a huge community of scientists exploring the phenomenon from every angle. SOME THINGS IN LIFE ARE TOO SERIOUS TO JOKE ABOUT. ASSISTED DYING IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

Description In 2017 Susie Kennaway asked her son Guy to kill her.88 years old, with an older and infirm husband, Susie wanted to avoid sliding into infantilised catatonia. The son immediately started taking notes and Time to Go is the result. In turns a manual for those considering the benefits of assisted dying, a portrait of a mother son relationship, and a sympathetic description of old age, this book is a route map through the moral, legal, emotional, intellectual and practical maze that is the biggest issue facing the senior generations today: leaving life on their own terms.During their conversations about when and how to make Susie s final exit, some of the difficulties of their fractious relationship mellowed and some even melted, as the reality of what they were planning brought them together. Many elderly people, like Susie, have clearly stated that they wish to die in a manner and time of their choosing. A change is coming for the rights of the elderly, the way it has come for the rights of women and gay people. Mensch AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 The Women Who Dared: Women Behaving Badly Jeremy Scott

Lighting up the pages of history, the extraordinary stories of six women who defied the spirit of their age

Description For centuries, women had no rights in society or in law and no real prospects beyond marriage. Wives endured slave-like positions, yielding any wealth they had to their husbands before becoming imprisoned by the trappings of patriarchal culture. Some, their personalities deemed inconvenient, were consigned to the asylum. Few ever found themselves in the position where they could break free from these manacles and even then surely no one in their right mind would dare to do so, such were the consequences. From Victoria Woodhull, the psychic pariah who ran for the US presidency in 1870 (at a time when she wasn't allowed to vote for herself), to Coco Chanel, the archetypal self-made businesswoman, The Women Who Dared presents the extraordinary stories of six women who refused to live by a man's idea of what was morally acceptable. They took charge of their own lives and acted as they pleased. Despite being met with amusement, disdain or outright disgust, they pressed on, flagging a path to liberty. With great verve, wit and reverence, Jeremy Scott pays tribute to them. The Women Who Dared tells the tales of Victoria Woodhull, Mary Wollstonecraft, Aimee Semple McPherson, Edwina Mountbatten, Margaret Argyll and Coco Chanel.

About the Author Jeremy Scott became a full-time writer following a colourful career in advertising, as described in his acclaimed memoir Fast and Louche. He is the author of Dancing on Ice, Show Me a Hero, The Irresistible Mr Wrong and Coke: The Biography. He lives in Chelsea, London.

Oneworld AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 The Triumph of Christianity Bart D. Ehrman

The epic historical narrative of Christianity's rise and how it shaped our world

Description In the early first century, a small group of illiterate peasants from the backwaters of the Roman Empire proclaimed that an executed enemy of the state was God's messiah. Less than four hundred years later theirs was the official religion of Rome with some thirty million followers. How did this happen' Christianity didn't have to become the dominant religion in the West. It could have easily been just another forgotten sect of Judaism fated to have the historical importance of the Sadducees or the Essenes. Bart Ehrman, a master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, explores what it was about the Christian message that converts found so compelling. Through meticulous research and luminous prose, he upends the way we think about one of the most important cultural transformations our world has ever seen that which has shaped the art, music, literature, philosophy, ethics, economics and law of modern Western civilization.

About the Author Bart D. Ehrman is a professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the New York Times-bestselling author of Misquoting Jesus and How Jesus Became God. Oneworld AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 The Culture of Bronze Peta Motture

A beautifully illustrated survey of Italian renaissance bronze

Description Bronze is generally defined as an alloy of copper and tin, but can contain zinc, lead and other elements. The term bronze' is often applied to any copper-alloy sculpture. Being both costly and luxurious, it arguably carried the most significance of all the sculptural materials. In the Renaissance, the use of bronze embodied power, authority and eternity and emulated the classical past. Yet it was one of the easiest materials to recycle, especially when the need for artillery was ever present. The Italian Renaissance was, nonetheless, a golden age for the production of sculpture in bronze, both on a grand scale for the religious and public arenas such as Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, Verrocchio's Colleoni monument or Cellini's Perseus and in the form of intimate statuettes and small-scale functional bronzes for the home and scholar's study, by artists and their workshops such as Riccio, Antico and Giambologna.

Drawing on the latest research, The Culture of Bronze explores the material and making of bronzes; the inter- relationships and collaboration between sculptor, founder and owner in the key centres of production, such as Florence, Padua, and the often over-looked city of Ferrara; as well as the inter-connections with Northern Europe. Encompassing works made for domestic, religious and civic environments, the book explores the symbolism of bronze, and the bronzes themselves, within their broader context in renaissance society.

Some 200 images will be used to illustrate The Culture of Bronze, making it a valuable sourcebook and an essential purchase for anyone with an interest in sculpture, in bronze or in artistic production in the Renaissance.

Verso Trade AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Bluebeard's ChamberBluebeard´„¢s Chamber Michael Maar

Germany's most gifted literary critic on the critical discussion of Nobel Prize laureate Thomas Mann.

Description Over the last twenty years, critical discussion of Thomas Mann has highlighted the role of his homosexuality for his creative work. This not only is presented as a dynamic underlying Mann's creative work, but also is the supposed reason for the theme of guilt and redemption that grew ever stronger in Mann's fiction. Michael Maar mounts a devastating forensic challenge to this consensus: Mann was remarkably open about his sexual orientation, which he saw as no reason for guilt. But sexuality in Mann's work is inextricably bound up with an eruption of violence. Maar pursues this trail through Mann's writings and traces its origins back to Mann's second visit to Italy, during which the Devil appeared to him in Palestrina. Something happened to the twenty-one-year-old Thomas Mann in Naples that marked him for life with a burdensome sense of guilt...but what exactly was it'

Verso Academic AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Europe's Fault Lines Elizabeth Fekete

An expansive investigation into the relationship between contemporary states and the far-right

Description It is clear that the right is on the rise, but after Brexit, the election of Donald Trump and the spike in popularity of extreme- right parties across Europe, the question on everyone's minds is: how did this happen' An expansive investigation of the ways in which a newly-configured right interconnects with anti-democratic and illiberal forces at the level of the state, Europe's Fault Lines provides much-needed answers, revealing some uncomfortable truths. What appear to be blind spots about far-right extremism on the part of the state, are shown to constitute collusion as police, intelligence agencies and the military embark on practices of covert policing that bring them into direct or indirect contact with the far right, in ways that bring to mind the darkest days of Europe's authoritarian past. Old racisms may be structured deep in European thought, but they have been revitalized and spun in new ways: the war on terror, the cultural revolution from the right, and the migration-linked demonization of the destitute scrounger. Drawing on her work for the Institute of Race Relations over thirty years, Liz Fekete exposes the fundamental fault lines of racism and authoritarianism in contemporary Europe.

About the Author Liz Fekete is Director of the Institute of Race Relations, where she has worked for over thirty years. But what does that even mean' Is it a good thing or not' Suddenly she's wondering whether she wants him to see her like the others - like the ultra-glamorous March, who's worked some sort of spell on Pez, or the girls in the videos that Pez has hidden on his laptop. Bloomsbury Child AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Exploring the Britannic: The life, last voyage and wreck of Titanic's tragic twin Simon Mills

A revelatory and wide-ranging exploration of HMS Britannice- her life at sea and on the seabed by the owner of her wreck

Description Launched in 1914, two years after the ill-fated maiden voyage of her sister ship, RMS Titanic, the Britannic was intended to be superior to her tragic twin in every way. But soon after her launch war intervened and in 1915 she was requisitioned as a hospital ship. Just one year later, while on her way to collect troops wounded in the First World War's Balkans campaign, she fell victim to a mine laid by a German U-boat and tragically sank in the middle of the Aegean Sea. There her wreck lay, at a depth of 400 feet, until it was discovered 59 years later by legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau. Since then a succession of expeditions, including one by Robert Ballard who discovered the wreck of the Titanic, have uncovered more about the Britannic and life on-board ship than anyone could have hoped for. In 1996 the wreck was bought by maritime historian and author of this book, Simon Mills. This book tells the complete story of the Britannic: her construction, launch and life, her fateful last voyage, her loss to a German mine, and the historical findings resulting from the exploration of the well-preserved wreck over a period of forty years. Fully illustrated with historical photos and diagrams, and scans, sonar images and stunning photographs of the wreck and the expeditions, the book will be an essential addition to the bookshelves of anyone with an interest in maritime history, First World War history, and all those interested in diving and maritime exploration.

Although much has been written on the exploration of the Titanic, to date there is nothing substantial on the similar work carried out on her sister ship. Until now.

About the Author Simon Mills bought the wreck of the Britannic in 1996. He is a maritime historian with decades of experience as an underwater camera technician. He has written books on all three Olympic-class ships and acted as consultant to many documentaries and films on the subject. Adlard Coles Nautica AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Left For Dead: 30 Years On - The Race is Finally Over Nick Ward, Sinead O'Brien

Now available as a paperback, Left for Dead is the tragic and inspirational account of Nick Ward's survival against all the odds. It is the experience of an ordinary man who survived an extraordinary event. It affected him so deeply that for over 25 years his story has remained untold - until now.

Description The second edition of the Sunday Times Sports Book of the Year is updated with a new chapter describing Nick's eventual completion of the Fastnet Race thirty years after his first, ill-fated attempt. The world-famous Fastnet Race takes yachts from the Isle of Wight to the Fastnet Rock off the southwest coast of Ireland and back. The 1979 race began in perfect conditions, but was soon engulfed by the deadliest storm in the history of modern sailing. By the time it passed, the havoc caused was immeasurable, and fifteen sailors had lost their lives. It had been Nick Ward's childhood ambition to sail in the Fastnet Race, and being asked to join the crew of the 30-foot yacht Grimalkin was a dream come true. But then the storm hit. Grimalkin was capsized again and again. With the skipper lost overboard, after hours of struggle three of the crew decided to abandon the boat for the liferaft. Adlard Coles Nautica AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Kabbalah: Secrecy, Scandal and the Soul Harry Freedman

Harry Freedman, author of The Talmud: A Biography and The Murderous History of Bible Translations, explores the mysterious tradition of Kabbalah

Description Kabbalah is popularly known as a fashionable system for personal and spiritual insight, its popularity driven by rock stars, sharp-suited West Coast rabbis out for a fast buck and seekers after truth. Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Britney Spears and even Princess Eugenie have all attested to their devotion to this Jewish mystical tradition. But behind the hype and simplicities of 'pop-Kabbalah' lies an ancient, complex and very profound system that can take a lifetime to master. Kabbalah is difficult to define. The very phrase 'story of Kabbalah' is as opaque and mysterious as the topic itself. This of course is its appeal. The word itself means 'received'. For over half a millennium, individuals and movements with no attachment to Judaism have incorporated Kabbalah into their own spiritual traditions. Kabbalah flourished in the Renaissance and its method was adopted in varying measures by Hermeticists, Rosicrucians, Freemasons and tarot card readers. Isaac Newton, Gottfried Leibnitz, Carl Jung and Harold Bloom have all admitted to the influence of Kabbalah. But it all goes back to the Hebrew Bible where the prophet Ezekiel described in detail his vision of the heavenly throne, perceived as a chariot. Today in Israel the power of Kabbalah is taken for granted, particularly among Oriental Jews and the Hasidim. Mystical rabbis bless babies, newly-wed couples, newly-built houses. They will even bless your business or political party for the right fee. Such is the strange and intriguing world of Kabbalah.

About the Author Dr Harry Freedman is the author of two previous Bloomsbury/Continuum titles, The Talmud: A Biography and The Murderous History of Bible Translations. He holds a D. Phil from Oxford University in Semitic studies. A retired businessman, he has in recent years devoted himself to scholarship and writing.

BLM Natural History AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Wild Cats of the World Luke Hunter

Wild Cats of the World provides detailed accounts for all 38 species of wild cat accompanied by magnificent artwork and stunning photography.

Description From the rabbit-sized Black-footed Cat of southern Africa to bear-killing Amur tigers of the Russian Far East, the 38 members of the Cat Family include some of the world's most fascinating and magnificent species on earth. Supremely adapted for the kill, all cats are obligate carnivores; they survive only by preying upon other animals, and they have become one of evolution's most successful predatory lineages of mammals.

Wild Cats of the World explores the spectacular Cat Family in unprecedented depth. Drawing on thousands of scientific papers and direct observations in the field, each species is profiled at length, covering all aspects of felid behaviour and ecology. The book is profusely illustrated with colour plates, black-and-white sketches showing important aspects of cat life and accurate images of every species' skull. Over 400 spectacular photographs are included, many of them showing extremely rare and little-known cats published here for the first time. Each profile includes an up-to-date range map and explains the most current science on how cats are classified and related to each other, including some very recent, surprising discoveries.

Despite their great evolutionary success, the challenges facing felids in the modern world are profound. Only one, the ubiquitous domestic cat, does not require dedicated conservation action to ensure survival for the next century. The book also explores the current conservation issues facing wild cats, the increasingly perilous status of many species and how they can be saved.

About the Author Luke Hunter is an Australian biologist and one of the leading names in wild cat conservation. He has worked on the ecology and conservation of carnivores since 1992, and he is currently the President of Panthera, the New York cat conservation organisation he helped to create in 2006. BLM Natural History AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Britain's Living Past: A Celebration of Britain's Surviving Traditional Cultural and Working Practices Anthony Burton, Rob Scott

A beautiful and fascinating exploration of Britain's traditional cultural and working practices and how the ways that we have worked and played for centuries still survive today

Description Britain's Living Past is a celebration of the best of the past, of things that have been preserved because they still matter to the community. It is a book in which the emphasis is very much on the word living'; looking at traditions, pastimes and working practices, some centuries old, that survive today not as museum pieces or in pages of a history book but as part of everyday modern life.

From reminders of Britain's great maritime past in the crafts of the shipwright and the rope maker, to the organised mayhem that is the Ashbourne Tuesday football match and the exotic splendour of Giffords traditional circus, writer Tony Burton and photographer Rob Scott have travelled the length and breadth of our great nation to recreate for the reader the amazing sights they have seen. Together they have travelled from Shetland in the far north to the tip of Cornwall. They have sailed along the Scottish coast in a paddle steamer and learned how to make Melton Mowbray pork pies by hand. They have watched ponies galloping through the streets of Appleby and resisted the temptation to try too many of the sweets in the world's oldest sweet shop.

This is a book that delights in the rich diversity of our historic survivors. For both author and photographer it has been a pleasure to witness many skilled people at work: to discover the complexity of building a fairground organ or to marvel at the skill and athleticism of circus performers. This is a book of rich variety that celebrates the great survivors from our islands' history.

About the Author Anthony Burton has been a freelance writer for fifty years, dividing his work into two rough categories. Helm Ornithonoly AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Making and Drawing Kyra Cane

Making and Drawing is an exploration of drawing from both a practical and a theoretical perspective, aimed at makers and artists of all kinds. The book examines drawing as a tool used in the process of making, as well as a form of making or decoration in itself.

Description It is common knowledge that artists of all kinds often make preparatory sketches before they create a work, but in fact this is only one of the ways in which artists are required to draw. Makers across all disciplines draw in some form or another, but often for diverse reasons, and using very different methods. Informed by interviews with artists across a broad range of disciplines, and often with special access to their sketchbooks and studios, Kyra Cane explores the many ways in which artists use drawing to inform, inspire and create their work. She describes how makers draw to record source material, as a form of planning, to develop surface decoration and three- dimensional forms, as a way of thinking about and reflecting on their work, and how they use new technology. Lavishly illustrated and thoughtfully constructed, Making and Drawing sheds new light on contemporary artists' practice. It is an essential read for visual arts students, artists who want to use drawing differently or explore its potential in their practice, and anyone who wants to know more about stories behind the creation of these works.

About the Author Kyra Cane was leader of the Harrow Ceramics degree course at the University of Westminster from 2000 to 2009, and has been a lecturer in drawing and ceramics since 1986. She has been an external validator for the Royal College of Art, external examiner for Glasgow School of Art and held the post of Chair of the National Association of Ceramics in Higher Education. She is a successful potter based at the Harley Foundation in Nottinghamshire, a selected member of Contemporary Applied Arts and a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain.

Herbert Press AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Bauhaus Women Elizabeth Otto, Patrick Russler

Forty five key women of the Bauhaus movement.

Description Forty five key women of the Bauhaus movement.

Bauhaus Women: A Global Perspective reclaims the other half of Bauhaus history, yielding a new understanding of the radical experiments in art and life undertaken at the Bauhaus and the innovations that continue to resonate with viewers around the world today. The story of the Bauhaus has usually been kept narrow, localized to its original time and place and associated with only a few famous men such as Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and LAiszlo Moholy-Nagy.

Bauhaus Women: A Global Perspective bursts the bounds of this slim history by revealing fresh Bauhaus faces: Forty-five Bauhaus women unjustifiably forgotten by most history books. This book also widens the lens to reveal how the Bauhaus drew women from many parts of Europe and beyond, and how, through these cosmopolitan female designers, artists, and architects, it sent the Bauhaus message out into the world and to a global audience.

About the Author Elizabeth Otto is a professor of modern and contemporary art history at The State University of New York at Buffalo. She has published widely on gender issues in Germany's visual culture of the 1920s and 1930s, especially at the Bauhaus. Her books include Tempo, Tempo! The Bauhaus Photomontages of Marianne Brandt and the co-edited collections Passages of Exile and The New Woman International: Representations in Photography and Film. Patrick Russler is a professor of communications and empirical research methods at the University of Erfurt, Germany. Herbert Press AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Henry Moore: The Helmet Heads Tobias Capwell, Hannah Higham

The first book to explore the sculptor Henry Moore's fascination with the medieval helmets in the armouries at the Wallace Collection, an interest which fundamentally influenced his work over many years

Description 'The idea of one form inside another form may owe some of its incipient beginnings to my interest at one stage when I discovered armour. I spent many hours in the Wallace Collection, in London, looking at armour.' Henry Moore, 1980. Coinciding with the major exhibition of the same name, Henry Moore: The Helmet Heads traces the footsteps of the artist through the armouries of the Wallace Collection, where he encountered 'objects of power' that profoundly influenced his work for the rest of his career. Captivated by helmets in particular, Moore saw in them a fundamental form idea an outer shell which could protect something vulnerable inside. Tobias Capwell identifies the specific helmets which inspired the artist and examines these alongside Moore's sculptures for the very first time. The reasons for his fascination with armour and the implications it had on his art, are explored by Hannah Higham and set in the context of Moore's life and work one punctuated by global conflicts and artistic experiment. Richly illustrated, this catalogue reveals the origins of some of Henry Moore's most innovative works and examines in depth for the first time this largely unknown aspect of his career.

About the Author Dr Tobias Capwell is one of the world's leading authorities on medieval and Renaissance armour. Curator of Arms and Armour at the Wallace Collection, he has published numerous books and articles on many diverse aspects of the subject, including its depiction in painting, sculpture and other media. Philip Wilson AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Michelangelo: Sculptor in Bronze Victoria Avery

A fascinating and ground-breaking study of Michelangelo's elusive work in bronze

Description This book, the first comprehensive interdisciplinary account of Michelangelo's work as a sculptor in bronze, is the outcome of extensive original research undertaken over several years by academics at the University of Cambridge together with a team of international experts, directed by Dr Victoria Avery, a leading authority on the history, art and technology of bronze casting in Renaissance Italy. The catalyst for this innovative project was the attribution to Michelangelo of the Rothschild bronzes two extraordinary bronze groups of nude men on fantastical panthers prior to their display at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 2015. First proposed by the distinguished Michelangelo scholar Professor Paul Joannides and validated by the wide-ranging research published here, the attribution to Michelangelo has now gained widespread acceptance. As part of this pioneering project, Professor Peter Abrahams, the eminent clinical anatomist specialising in dissection, has carried out the first ever in-depth scientific analysis of the anatomy of Michelangelo's nude figures. Abrahams' findings have uncovered hitherto unrecognised features of Michelangelo's unparalleled mastery of the structure and workings of the human body that give the gesture and the motion of his figures their unique expressive force. Enigmatic and visually-striking masterpieces, the Rothschild bronzes are the focus of this multi-authored, interdisciplinary volume that contains ground-breaking contributions by leading experts in the fields of art history, anatomy, conservation science, bronze casting and the history of collecting.

About the Author Victoria Avery (BA, MA, PhD, University of Cambridge) has been Keeper of Applied Arts at the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge, since 2010, prior to which she was Associate Professor in the History of Art Department, University of Warwick (2005 -10). She published on various aspects of the applied arts, including the co-authored Fitzwilliam Museum exhibition catalogue, Treasured Possessions from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment (PWP, 2015).

Osprey AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Sherman Lead: Flying the F-4D Phantom II in Vietnam Gaillard R. Peck, Jr.

An engrossing personal account of a year in Vietnam, told by an F-4D Phantom fighter-pilot.

Description Written by a pilot who flew near-daily combat missions, this engrossing book is the story of one man, his colleagues and his machine, the mighty F-4 Phantom II, at war.

Sherman Lead is the gripping story of a year flying the F-4 in combat during the Vietnam War, told through the eyes of a fighter pilot. Operating out of Ubon Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand in 1968 69, Gail Peck and his squadronmates in the 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing were tasked with flying combat missions into North Vietnam and Laos at this time as part of Operations Rolling Thunder and Steel Tiger. The F-4 was heavily involved in the air-to-ground mission at this time, with targets being well defended by enemy anti- aircraft artillery and surface-to-air missiles. Gail Peck's arrival in-theatre coincided with the beginning of electro-optical and laser guided smart' bomb combat operations. There were periods of fierce combat interspersed with lulls, and the fighting was intense and unforgettable to those who participated. Some men lived through it, and others died without a clear understanding of why.

About the Author Gaillard R Peck Jr. is an Air Force Academy graduate and retired US Air Force colonel. He graduated top of his class during pilot training, but was denied his career goal of a fighter assignment, instead being retained as an instructor. F-4 training eventually followed this initial interval, along with an immediate combat assignment to the 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. He subsequently flew 163 combat missions, many of which were conducted at night, and was awarded the Silver Star and three Distinguished Flying Crosses. He served as an instructor in the MiG-17 and later both the F-5E and MiG-21 as a Red Eagles' aggressor pilot in the program known as Constant Peg. His career continued with assignments to Saudi Arabia during the Iran/Iraq War and as an operational F-15 Eagle pilot and commander in Japan. Peck retired from active duty in 1988, and since 1998 he has been an F-15C, F-22 and Special Ops academic instructor at the USAF Weapons School at Nellis AFB. Among numerous other honours, in 2013 he was inducted into the State of Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame. He lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The history, uniforms, insignia and equipment of the volunteer Norwegian SS unit that fought on the Leningrad front in Russia.

Description Following the Nazi occupation of Norway in 1941, the Waffen-SS began recruiting volunteers to serve in their ranks. Initially formed into small volunteer units, these developed into large divisions by 1943, referred to as Legions' in Nazi propaganda. Early volunteers were promised that they would not leave Scandinavia and that they would serve under native Norwegian officers but after the German invasion of the Soviet Union they were deployed to the Leningrad front alongside Dutch and Latvian units, in the 2nd SS Infantry Brigade. These units combined to form the nucleus of a whole regiment within the new 11th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division 'Nordland'. Fully illustrated with detailed artwork depicting the uniforms and equipment of the volunteer soldiers, this fascinating study tells the little-known story of the Norwegians who fought with the SS in World War II.

Osprey AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Cold War Fleet: Ships of the Royal Navy 1966-91 Clive Taylor, Sue Taylor

An album of superb photographs of vessels of the Royal Navy from 1966 91

Description Cold War Fleet is a selection of photographs of Royal Navy vessels from the 25 years from 1966 to 1991. The vessels are primarily warships, but also include naval auxiliaries and port vessels. Each is reproduced at a high standard, accompanied by a detailed caption. May of the photos are completely unique and have never been published, for example the minesweepers 'Wilton' and 'Bossington' photographed during Operation Rheostat in 1974 at Lake Timsah on the Suez Canal. There are many ships that took part in the Falklands conflict and a large number of aerial photographs. The photographs are presented 2-up on a page in a large format and are arranged by type (aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers), subdivided into classes (eg Leander class, Amazon class) then by individual ship. Preference has been given to showing different viewpoints and appearances so there are sometimes several different views of the same ship but at different angles and configurations. A uniquely comprehensive and high-quality resource from leading naval photographers.

About the Author Clive and Sue Taylor have been photographing naval shipping for more than 45 years and were arguably the top photographers in the field of naval photography. They contributed to Janes Fighting Ships and most of the professional magazines. Osprey AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 RF-101 Voodoo Units in Combat Peter E. Davies

A fully illustrated study of the little-studied RF-101, whose spectacular performance, dramatic appearance, and distinguished record in combat made it an extremely popular aircraft, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War.

Description McDonnell's F-101 Voodoo series was in many ways the most interesting of the Century Series' fighter programmes of the 1950s, partly because the type's design and intended mission changed radically during a 40-year career. Originally designed as a fighter-bomber, it was converted to be a reconnaissance aircraft, serving alongside the U-2 and RF-8 Crusaders during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. Although it gained a reputation as a difficult aircraft to handle, the jet's supersonic speed and newly-developed camera suite enabled it to conduct vital low-altitude photo- reconnaissance missions over heavily-defended target areas. In combat, the RF 101 was usually first in-last out' for strike missions. This made it a ready target, with a solo aircraft flying straight and level to gather target photo evidence at low-altitude offering enemy gunners plenty of opportunity to shoot the Voodoo down. This study tells the combat stories of this extraordinary aircraft, highlighting the difficulty of the missions on which it was sent and the courage of its pilots.

About the Author Peter E Davies has published more than 30 books concentrating on modern combat aircraft and the Vietnam War. He has written 26 previous Osprey titles and co-authored two others, several of them concerning the Voodoo's successor, the F-4 Phantom II. His specialism in tactical air operations in the Vietnam War has given him an extensive database of knowledge in this area of aviation history, although in recent years he has also ventured into other topics for Osprey's X-Planes and Duels series. Osprey AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Russian Soldier vs Japanese Soldier: Manchuria 1904-05 David Campbell

With appeal to histories of World War I and the development of 20th-century warfare, this absorbing study casts new light on the fighting men of the Russo-Japanese War a conflict that heralded revolution in Russia, and the arrival of Japan on the global military stage.

Description At the turn of the 20th century, the region of Manchuria sat atop a potentially catastrophic political fault line; the ancient strength of China was crumbling, leaving opportunities for both Russia and Japan to claw out new territories from the edges of that dying empire. Russian pride would contend with Japanese ambition in a conflict that ushered in the age of massed armies fighting on battlefields that were being redefined by the new tools of war such as newer, larger artillery pieces, and the use of machine guns in pitched battles. The vast, but over-stretched Russian Army was expected to steamroller its far smaller opponent, but the aggressiveness and zeal of the more modern Japanese military confounded expectations. Examining these two armies in detail, this fully illustrated study tells the story of how these two empires clashed in the Russo-Japanese War, heralding a new phase in modern warfare as World War I loomed on the horizon.

About the Author David Campbell has worked as a freelance new media producer and content specialist for many years, including roles at IBM, the BBC, various internet consultancies and the civil service. Osprey AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Sniping Rifles on the Eastern Front 1939-45 Martin Pegler

Featuring specially commissioned artwork, this absorbing book investigates the technology and tactics employed by snipers on both sides on the Eastern Front of World War II in a host of battles from Leningrad to Berlin.

Description The Soviet Union had developed a significant sniping force by 1939, but the extraordinary skill and cunning displayed by Finnish snipers during the Winter War forced the Soviets to innovate. On the other side, German sniping suffered from a lack of standardization of weapons and a lack of marksmen deployed at the start of the Great Patriotic War (1941 45). There were few heroes in the conflict, but on both sides, the snipers were idolized especially on the Soviet side, gaining almost mythical status. As well as traditional bolt-action weapons, both sides used several types of semi-automatic rifle, such as the SVT-38 and the Gew 41. Offering greater firepower at the expense of long-range accuracy, such weapons would be profoundly influential in the postwar world. Fully illustrated, this absorbing study investigates the development of sniping weapons and techniques on World War II's Eastern Front.

About the Author Martin Pegler is a former Senior Curator of Firearms at the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds. He is currently a firearms consultant and has written a number of articles and books, many for Osprey. He lives in France.

The dread dragon Niddhoggr has devoured the roots of the World Ash, Yggdrasil, and the great tree has toppled onto its side, crashing the realms of mortal and supernatural together. With strategic gameplay and epic storytelling, players must write their own sagas and tell of how their war clans have, through blood and steel, clawed their way up from ruin to stand before the halls of Valhalla.

Methuen Drama AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Early Modern Actors and Shakespeare's Theatre: Thinking with the Body Evelyn Tribble

An examination of Shakespeare's theatres through the lens of the skills actors needed to perform it.

Description What skills did Shakespeare's actors bring to their craft' How do these skills differ from those of contemporary actors' Early Modern Actors and Shakespeare's Theatre: Thinking with the Body examines the toolkit' of the early modern player and suggests new readings of the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries through the lens of their many skills. Theatre is an ephemeral medium. Little remains to us of the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries: some printed texts, scattered documents and records, and a few scraps of description, praise, and detraction. Because most of what survives are printed playbooks, students of English theatre find it easy to forget that much of what happened on the early modern stage took place within the gaps of written language: the implicit or explicit calls for fights, dances, military formations, feats of physical skill, song, and clowning. Theatre historians and textual editors have often ignored or denigrated such moments, seeing them merely as extraneous amusements or signs that the text has been corrupted' by actors. This book argues that recapturing a positive account of the skills and expertise of the early modern players will result in a more capacious understanding of the nature of theatricality in the period.

About the Author Evelyn Tribble is Donald Collie Chair and Professor of English at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand.

Description This anthology brings together reflective and raw plays by American playwrights surrounding the psychic and political boundaries of the many faces and shadows of terrorism. In the last 25 years, American society has experienced major shocks through militia violence and terrorist assault from both its citizens and foreign agents. From the Ruby Ridge attack in Idaho in 1992, through 9/11, today we are witnessing a greater pulsation of terrorism in America and around the globe. The plays featured are: Break of Noon by Neil LaBute 7/11 by Kia Corthron Omnium Gatherum by Theresa Rebeck and Alexandra Gestern-Vassilaros Columbinus by PJ Paparelli and Stephen Karam Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them by Christopher Durang An introductory essay by the volume editor, Allan Havis, addresses factual terrorism cases over the last 25 years, examines several theories of the root causes of modern terrors and the complex role of our media, and underscores how theatre forms a unique contour to social and philosophical thought.

BLM Visual Arts AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Shopping Towns Europe: Commercial Collectivity and the Architecture of the Shopping Centre, 1945-1975 Edited by Janina Gosseye and Tom Avermaete

The first book to explore the history of the shopping centre in Europe connecting shopping, consumerism, modernity and architectural design.

Description Shopping Towns Europe is the first book to explore the introduction and dissemination of the shopping centre in Europe. European shopping centres are often assumed to be no more than carbon copies of their American precursors however the wide-ranging case studies featured in this book reveal a very different story. Drawing connections between architectural history, political economy and commerce, together these studies tell us much about the status and role of modernist design, the history of consumption, and the rapidly-changing social, urban, and national contexts of post-war Europe. The boo s eighteen chapters explore case studies spanning the continent on both sides of the Iron Curtain, from Britain and The Netherlands to Sweden and the USSR. BLM Visual Arts AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Manic Street Preachers' The Holy Bible David Evans

This book tells the story of the development of The Holy Bible and the subsequent disappearance of Manic Street Preachers' chief architect, Richard Edwards, by tracing the album's roots to the historical and political circumstances surrounding South Wales during the band's formative years.

Description In August 1994, Manic Street Preachers released The Holy Bible, a dark, fiercely intelligent album that explored such themes as mental illness, murder and war. Richey Edwards, the band's lyricist and motive force, vanished five months later; he was never found. In his absence The Holy Bible entered the rock canon alongside Joy Division's Closer and Nirvana's In Utero, the valedictory works of troubled young men.

This book tells the dramatic story of Manic Street Preachers' masterpiece. Tracing the album's origins in the Valleys, an industrialised region of South Wales where the band spent their formative years, the author argues that The Holy Bible can be seen as a meditation on the uses and abuses of history.

BLM Acad US AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 The Shangri-Las' Golden Hits of the Shangri-Las Ada Wolin

Presents an analysis of 60s girl-groups and aims to separate the Shangri-Las from this category, viewing them instead with the sort of individuality traditionally afforded to rock groups.

Description Of the many girl-groups that came out of the 1960s, none is more idiosyncratic and influential than the Shangri-Las. They were together only five years, but within that time they subverted pop standards and foreshadowed a generation of tough women in music. Critically, they are not lauded in the way of the Ronettes, and they are certainly not a household name like the Supremes. They were a little too low-brow with an uncouth flair for theatrics that has placed them just left of the girl-group canon. This book examines the still-elusive validation of 60s girl-groups as a whole, but also paradoxically aims to free the Shangri-Las from that category, viewing them instead with the sort of individuality traditionally afforded to rock groups. They were somehow able to challenge the status quo under the guise of sticky-sweet pop, a feat not many pop groups can achieve, but which they do fleetingly but not insubstantially in Golden Hitsof the Shangri-Las.

BLM Acad US AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Tom Petty's Southern Accents Michael Washburn

Explores the ways in which Southern Accents is a fascinating multidimensional failure that unexpectedly mired Tom Petty in debates about American culture and history.

Description By 1985 Tom Petty had already obtained legendary status. He had fame. He had money. But he was restless, hoping to stretch his artistry beyond the confining format of songs like The Waiting and Refugee. Petty's response to his restlessness was Southern Accents. Initially conceived as a concept album about the American South, Southern Accents's marathon recording sessions were marred by aesthetic and narcotic excess. The result is a hodgepodge of classic rock songs mixed with nearly unlistenable 80s music. Then, while touring for the album, Petty made extensive use of the iconography of the American Confederacy, something he soon came to regret. Despite its artistic failure and public controversy, Southern Accents was a pivot point for Petty. Reeling from the defeat, Petty reimagined himself as deeply, almost mythically, Californian, obtaining his biggest success with Full Moon Fever.

Michael Washburn explores the history of Southern Accents and how it sparked Petty's reinvention. Washburn also examines how the record both grew out of and reinforced enduring but flawed assumptions about Southern culture and the Lost Cause of the Confederacy.

About the Author Michael Washburn, director of programs at Humanities New York, has written about books, culture, and politics for a number of publications. Follow him on Twitter at @whalelines.

BLM Acad US AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Odetta's One Grain of Sand Matthew Frye Jacobson

The first book-length treatment of Odetta and an examination of the broader cultural currents and historical roots throughout the album.

Description When 20-year-old Odetta Holmes classically trained as a vocalist and poised to become the next Marian Anderson veered away from both opera and musical theater in favor of performing politically charged field hollers, prison songs, work songs, and folk tunes before mixed-race audiences in 1950s coffee houses, she was making one of the most portentous decisions in the history of both American music and Civil Rights. Released the same year as her famous rendition of I'm on My Way at the March on Washington, One Grain of Sand captures the social justice project that was Odetta's voice. There was no way I could say the things I was thinking, but I could sing them, she later remarked. In pieces like Moses, Moses, Ain't No Grave, and Ramblin' Round Your City, One Grain of Sand embodies Odetta's approach to the folk repertoire as both an archive of black history and a vehicle for radical expression. For many among her audience, a song like Cotton Fields represented a first introduction to black history at a time when there was as yet no academic discipline going by this name, and when history books themselves still peddled convenient fictions of a fundamentally happy plantation past. And for many among her audience, black and white, this young woman's pride in black artistry and resolve, and her open rage and her challenge to whites to recognize who they were and who they had been, too, modeled the very honesty and courage that the movement now called for.

About the Author Matthew Frye Jacobson teaches American Studies and African American Studies at Yale University, and is the co- founder of the Public Humanities program there. He has written extensively on a range of cultural forms, including film, television, literature, the arts, sports, music, and comedy. In addition to his five books on aspects of race in US culture, he has conducted several documentary, curatorial, and artistic projects, including The Historian's Eye, a web-based documentary project, and his forthcoming film, A Long Way from Home: The Untold Story of Baseball's Desegregation.

BLM Acad US AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 George Clooney Paul McDonald

Paul McDonald's study of the actor, filmmaker and activist situates George Clooney in the context of contemporary Hollywood celebrity culture, but argues that Clooney's star persona also evokes the golden age of Hollywood film stardom.

Description Paul McDonald's study of the actor-filmmaker George Clooney traces the star's career, from his role in the hit television medical drama ER to his dual screen persona, allowing him to move seamlessly from commercial hits such as Out of Sight (1998) and Ocean's Eleven (2001) to more offbeat roles in such films as Oh Brother, Where Art Thou' (2000). McDonald also considers Clooney's political activism and his roles in such explicity political films as Three Kings (1999) and Syriana (2005), as well as his work as a producer of films including Argo (2012) and as director of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002); Good Night, and Good Luck (2005) and Suburbicon (2017) among others. McDonald places Clooney in the context of the Hollywood star system, considering the argument that Clooney's star persona has many similarities with that of Classical Hollywood movie stars such as Cary Grant, but also addresses Clooney as a very 21st century transmedia celebrity.

About the Author Paul McDonald is Professor of Cultural and Creative Industries and Vice Dean (People & Planning) for Arts in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at King's College London, UK. He is the author of The Star System: Hollywood's Production of Popular Identities (2000); Hollywood Stardom (2013) and Video and DVD Industries (BFI 2007). British Film Institute AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 A New Philosophy of Society: Assemblage Theory and Social Complexity Manuel DeLanda

A highly original interrogation of social philosophy from one of the world's leading theorists

Description In A New Philosophy of Society Manuel DeLanda offers a fascinating look at how the contemporary world is characterized by an extraordinary social complexity. Since most social entities, from small communities to large nation-states, would disappear altogether if our cognitive abilities ceased to exist, DeLanda proposes a novel approach to social ontology that asserts the autonomy of social entities from the conceptions we have of them. DeLanda argues that Gilles Deleuze's theory of assemblages provides a framework in which sociologists and geographers studying social networks and regions can properly locate their work and fully elucidate the connections between them. Indeed, assemblage theory, as DeLanda argues, can be used to model any community, from interpersonal networks and institutional organizations, to central governments, cities and nation states.

About the Author Manuel DeLanda is a distinguished writer, artist and philosopher. He began his career in experimental film, later becoming a computer artist and programmer. He is Gilles Deleuze Chair and Professor of Philosophy at The European Graduate School / EGS, Switzerland and lecturer in Architecture at Princeton University, USA. He is the author of Philosophical Chemistry (2015) and Philosophy and Simulation (2011).

Oneworld AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Borrowed Time: The Science of How and Why We Age Sue Armstrong

Sue Armstrong tells the story of society's quest to understand ageing through the eyes of the scientists themselves, as well as through the ordinary' people who exemplify the mysteries of ageing from those who suffer from the premature ageing condition, Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, to people still running marathons in their 80s. Borrowed Time will investigate such mind-boggling experiments as transfusing young blood into old rodents, and research into transplanting the first human head, amongst many others. It will explore where science is taking us and what issues are being raised from a psychological, philosophical and ethical perspective, through interviews with, and profiles of, key scientists in the field and the people who represent interesting and important aspects of ageing.

About the Author Sue Armstrong is a science writer and broadcaster based in Edinburgh. She has worked for a variety of media organisations, including New Scientist, and since the 1980s has undertaken regular assignments for the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNAIDS, writing about women's health issues and the AIDS pandemic, among many other topics, and reporting from the frontline in countries as diverse as Haiti, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, Thailand, Namibia Price: $32.99 ISBN: 9781472936066 and Serbia. Sigma AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 170 Years of Persecution: A History of the Baha'is of Iran Fereydun Vahman

A searing account of the oppression of a people by those in power and the profound effect this has had on the construction of Iran's modern identity

Description The Baha'i faith is the youngest of the world religions and the second most widespread after Christianity. It is well known for its belief in the essential unity of all religions and its global outlook. Its core beliefs of peace, harmony and tolerance, as well as its high regard for ethical conduct, make it a faith with a broad and potent appeal in the modern world. For almost two centuries the followers of the Baha'i religion in Iran have been victims of persecution. From the pogroms during the Qajar dynasty in the nineteenth century to the present regime's attempts to eradicate the Baha'i community, they have been used as a scapegoat, falsely accused of being disloyal to their country, branded enemies of Islam, and even denounced as foreign agents. Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 their children have been barred from entering the nation's universities and more than two hundred Baha'is have been executed. Many hundreds more have been imprisoned and tortured. Now Iran is at a turning point. A new generation of ordinary people sceptical of the clergy and government's hostility, as well as scholars, commentators and emerging leaders, have come to question the historical portrayal of Baha'is and called for them to be given equal rights as fellow citizens. In 170 Years of Persecution, Fereydun Vahman documents the history of the Baha'i faith in Iran, recording not only their plight but also the greater plight of the nation as it aspires to form a modern identity built on respect for diversity rather than one based on hatred and self-deception.

About the Author Fereydun Vahman is professor emeritus at the University of Copenhagen. Since the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 he has been a leading voice defending the rights of Baha'is. He is the author of several books in Persian, English and Danish, and is editor of the Religion and Society in Iran' series.

Adlard Coles Nautica AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 The Cameron Delusion Peter Hitchens

The main enemy of conservatism in Britain is the Conservative Party.

Description The struggle between the main political parties has been reduced to an unpopularity contest, in which voters hold their noses and sigh as they trudge to the polls. Peter Hitchens explains how and why British politics has sunk to this dreary level - the takeover of the parties and the media by conventional left-wing dogmas which then call themselves 'the centre ground'. The Tory party under David Cameron has become a pale-blue twin of New Labour, offering change without alteration. Hitchens, a former Lobby reporter, examines and mocks the flock mentality of most Westminster journalists, explains how unattributable lunches guide coverage and why so many reporters - once slavish admirers of Labour - now follow the Tory line. This updated edition of Hitchens's The Broken Compass (2009) features a brand new introduction. In an excoriating analysis, Hitchens examines the Tory Party's record in government and opposition, dismissing it as a failure on all fronts but one - the ability to win office without principle. The one thing it certainly isn't is conservative.

About the Author Peter Hitchens is a British journalist, author and broadcaster. He witnessed most of the final scenes of the Cold War, and was a resident correspondent in the Soviet capital and in Washington, DC. He frequently revisits both Russia and the USA. He currently writes for the Mail on Sunday, where he is a columnist and occasional foreign correspondent, reporting most recently from Iran, North Korea, Burma, The Congo and China. He won the journalism category in the 2010 George Orwell Prize for this correspondence.

Continuum AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 Modern Culture Roger Scruton

What do we mean by 'culture'?

Description What do we mean by 'culture'? This word, purloined by journalists to denote every kind of collective habit, lies at the centre of contemporary debates about the past and future of society. Methuen Drama AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 American Political Plays in the Age of Terrorism Edited by Allan Havis

Covering the last 25 years, this anthology brings together plays by American playwrights that consider the rise of terrorism in US society, from both its citizens and foreign agents.

The ascendancy of ISIS, the horrors of Boko Haram and the disquietude of house-of-worship attacks, such as the Charleston church shootings in 2015, are all contributing to this situation.

About the Author Allan Havis is Professor of Theatre and Provost Emeritus of Thurgood Marshall College at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author of nineteen full-length published plays, which have been produced at many of the nation's leading playhouses. He edited the collection American Political Plays (2001) and also American Political Plays After 9/11 (2010).
