“Return to Mayberry” SINGLES (Young Adults to Senior Adults) Memphis Conference Single Adult Ministry (MCSAM) invites you to join us at Lakeshore United Methodist Assembly in Eva, Tennessee. We will be hosting a fellowship weekend May 17th-19th entitled “Return to Mayberry” The Mayberry Bible Study: Quote from Stephen Skelton, author of the Mayberry Bible Study: “To teach a lesson, Jesus often told a parable—an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. By using situations from everyday life, parables make spiritual truth more relevant to the listeners. Incredibly, parables compel sincere seekers to uncover the truth, yet cloak that truth from those that would oppose its teaching. For the parables of Mayberry, each story was designed with a lesson in mind. Indeed, many stories that transcend social, racial and cultural barriers today do so because they contain spiritual truth for which all people have a God-given hunger. Accordingly, these Bible studies can not only provide a time of good fellowship, but also equip the church with ways to reach the world beyond.” Throughout the weekend, we will be using Volume 1 of the Mayberry Bible Study. This volume features four lessons and discussions based on episodes from the Andy Griffith Show. Each session will be introduced by watching an episode of the show, then we will work in small groups to answer questions from a study book, and finally we will come back together for large group discussion. Our four lessons will focus on the topics of “Service”, “Peace”, “Commitment”, and “Mercy”. From 1960-1968, Andy Griffith portrayed the role of a “single father” who was the sheriff of the small town of Mayberry, North Carolina. In episode after episode, Sheriff Andy Taylor exemplied “Service”, “Peace”, “Commitment”, and “Mercy”. His calm demeanor and patience often were needed to balance out the high spirited and impulsive responses of some of the funnier characters such as Barney Fife. More often than not, when Sheriff Taylor tried to teach a life lesson to his young son, Opie; the viewers came away with a good reminder of how we as Christians should live our lives. This weekend, we will turn back the clock to a slower paced time and attempt to learn more about ourselves and our faith walk. Who is MCSAM???: MCSAM is a ministry for single adults that is sponsored by the Memphis Conference of the United Methodist Church. Jan Brittain, July 11, 2021 Williamson’s Chapel United Methodist Church The Gospel in Mayberry – A Little Child Shall Lead Luke 18:15-17 INTRODUCTION TO THE SERIES It really is one of North Carolina’s claims to fame. The homeplace of Andy Griffith and the hometown that was the model for Mayberry, America’s best known and most beloved small town. Of course, modeled on Mt. Airy or not, Mayberry is not actually a real town, only a television town. It can’t be real, for as Andy himself points out, there is no place on earth where all problems are solved in just 30 minutes. Still, some of us – lots and lots of us, in fact – still like to go to Mayberry if only for a 30-minute refuge from the pace of life today. There are a host of memorable characters on the show beyond what we would consider the main characters. Like Floyd Lawson, the lovable if frustrating barber with a shop next to the sheriff’s office. And when Floyd leaves the show, Emmett Clark moves into his shop. ______________________________________________________________________________ Unpublished work ©2021 Julianne Brittain The Gospel in Mayberry – A Little Child Shall Lead Page 2 of 6 Rev. This year, LeeTran is offering both tram and trolley options to help move people conveniently and inexpensively around the island. “The popular Beach Tram will return to Fort Myers Beach from January 3 through May 1,” said Robert Bodie, the new LeeTran Director. “Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and we may extend evening service if we see a need. Due to their open nature, trams are free to residents and visitors, rather than the 75-cent trolley fee.” Trams run from Bowditch Point Park, through Lynn Hall Memorial Park and Times Square, then turn around near Matanzas Pass Preserve looping around Bay Road, Oak Street and School Street. “We understand some folks want permanent benches near the turn-around,” said Bodie, “and are evaluating that, to improve the long- term experience.” The trams connect with the Beach Park & Ride Trolleys, that travel from Pine Ridge Rd and Summerlin Square to FMB, at Times Square and the Lovers Key State Park Trolley at Bowditch Point Park, servicing such island attractions as the Fort Myers Beach Public Library, Bay Oaks Recreational Center and Community Pool, Beach Elementary Traveling through downtown FMB, the free tram connects visitors with FMB businesses and restaurants.
