Volume 19, Number 1 “By Islanders, For Islanders” January 4, 2019 Beach Tram Service Underway Popular Transports Return For 2nd Season By Gary Mooney [email protected] Seasonal visitors know that parking on Fort Myers Beach can be a challenge, cutting into both their time enjoying Paradise and their wallet. This year, LeeTran is offering both tram and trolley options to help move people conveniently and inexpensively around the island. “The popular Beach Tram will return to Fort Myers Beach from January 3 through May 1,” said Robert Bodie, the new LeeTran Director. “Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and we may extend evening service if we see a need. Due to their open nature, trams are free to residents and visitors, rather than the 75-cent trolley fee.” Trams run from Bowditch Point Park, through Lynn Hall Memorial Park and Times Square, then turn around near Matanzas Pass Preserve looping around Bay Road, Oak Street and School Street. “We understand some folks want permanent benches near the turn-around,” said Bodie, “and are evaluating that, to improve the long- term experience.” The trams connect with the Beach Park & Ride Trolleys, that travel from Pine Ridge Rd and Summerlin Square to FMB, at Times Square and the Lovers Key State Park Trolley at Bowditch Point Park, servicing such island attractions as the Fort Myers Beach Public Library, Bay Oaks Recreational Center and Community Pool, Beach Elementary Traveling through downtown FMB, the free tram connects visitors with FMB businesses and restaurants. I asked how long such a process took until the palm tree was gone and the Caron Luttrell Armstrong fig tree had become monumental. Our leader was wonderfully honest and said he didn’t know. Now, in my favorite hour of weekly reading, after I pick up my Is- land Sand Paper at the kiosk in Sea Grape Plaza every Friday morning when I walk my dog, I was absorbed by J.M. Scalisi’s story of the first minutes and days of a Strangler Fig. (“Local Science: Figs and wasps … What??,” Island Sand Paper; December 14, 2018) The birth, I learned is brought on by 600 species of picky wasps each of whom will only pollinate one particular species of 600 fig trees. (Can you stand it?) I loved the entire saga, thank you Mr. or Ms. Scalisi. But please, please consider another article for Sand Paper readers--Part II: What happens to the two trees in this extraordinary process, the wasps having flown off to do more pollinating, dying for their efforts. How long does it take a Strangler Fig to strangle a host? And how does it accomplish such a feat? Does the host tree ever win the battle? I want to know everything. ISLAND WISHES FOR 2019

We just began a new year, the last one of the second decade of the 21st century. For those born deep in the 20th century, that is worth pon- dering. We’re beyond the struggle to remember to date checks correctly as many wrestle with remembering passwords to pay our bills online. The world keeps on spinning. The beginning of a new year is celebrated as a fresh start, a blank slate, the opportunity to do things differently in the future. At least that’s what the hordes of new gym users seem to be thinking in early January. Many use the New Year to focus on changes in their life, resolving to do or not do something that will improve their lives. So, too, our community can use this opportunity to focus on how to be the best Island community we can be. Here are a few of our wishes for our Island in 2019:

- Clean Water. We hope that our elected officials heard our cry in 2018 and enact clean water regulations and environmental stan- dards that will move our state toward protecting our water. We hope voters will hold them to their promises.

8. Christmas Concrete Carry- over:

If you like the concrete barrier wall between the Red Coconut RV Park to Connecticut Street and points south for Christmas 2018, you will love it again for Christmas 2019! Because of delays in the permit-ap- proval process due to President Donald Trump’s significant bud- get cuts to the United States Army Corps of Engineers, we are stuck in a loop where outfall construction permits receive approval in Sum- mer, meaning significant construc- tion cannot occur in the offseason, when traffic is light, but for the Holi- days and Season when it is busiest! If there is a saving grace, Estero Boulevard work continues to move south down the island, further from the primary tourism districts, mean- ing that while many visitors may not know it is still on-going, full-time residents bear the greatest frustra- tion!

7. A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall:

Despite the horrific Fort Myers Beach water quality conditions in 2018, we really did not have an ex- tremely wet season rainfall-wise, yet all that changes in 2019, when our area encounters a well above-aver- age – but not record-setting – rain total. Residents in the completed sections of the Estero Boulevard Projects enjoy dry pavement, while those to the south keep kayaks and boat keys handy!

6. I Am Woman; Hear Me Roar!

An influx of new members, new of- ficers, and new energy continues to add a new synergy to the Fort Myers Beach Woman’s Club! Water quality issues, headlined by Blue-Green Algae and Red Tide, return again in 2019 with a ven- geance, bringing another year of economic disaster for beach busi- nesses. The Fort Myers Beach Public Library Artist of the Month for January is not one single individual, as most often occurs, but two exhibits from “Art Quilters Unlimited (AQU).” They will debut the new exhibit, “Resist: Interpretations & Techniques,” as well as present “Reflections on Hurricane Irma.” “These quilts are not functional or something you lay on your floor,” stated Pamela Richardson, AQU Exhibit Chair; “they are true works of art.” In explaining the origins of the two shows, Pamela said that “every year to 18 months, the Exhibit Chair comes up with a theme and invites members to produce works about them. They receive some specific instructions, like size restrictions, formats or materials they must include in each piece. For ‘Reflections on Hurricane Irma,’ for example, each one must not only reflect upon the artist’s experience with the storm, whether they went through it here in our area or out of town, but it must contain some type of lanai screening.”

RESIST & REFLECTIONS

“Resist: Interpretations & Techniques” required each artist to create an interpretive work on what “Resist” means to them, “no matter if they perceive it as political or personal or social or anything else,” offered Pamela. “‘Resist Printing’ is also a popular textile technique, for printing color on fabric, referring to dying to add color or discharging to remove it, resulting in beautiful patterns, so it has a double meaning in this exhibit.

“Resist the Effects of Change” by Linda Bachman, another piece in the Resist exhibit. There are 18 pieces in the show from 16 different artists, so you see 18 different perspectives, including topics like Climate Change, the current political climate, women’s health issues, addiction and how age does not need to dictate your everyday life. These works are quite diverse and that is what makes it an exciting show.” Pamela said all the pieces are 16 inches wide by 26 inches long, “for a unified presentation, so guests will hopefully concentrate onthe differences. During the FMB Library exhibit, we will have a statement book by the artists, so people can best understand and reflect upon the works. For exhibits like this, libraries are the most receptive venues, as they are open to the expressions of learning and knowledge. After the FMB Library, ‘Resist’ moves to the Cape Coral Library for March and April.” As for the exhibit of “Reflections on Hurricane Irma,” “it previously was at the Unitarian Church of Fort Myers, from August through September, to mark the 1st anniversary,” Pamela related. “This show was an open challenge, as there remains such an interest in Irma, because it has such a personal connection to everyone in Southwest Florida and beyond. A large portion of our population hunkered down, holding our breath, while others chose to evacuate. Whether you stayed or left, we were all glued to our televisions and computers, continually watching the forecast and warnings updates.” There are 12 pieces in “Reflection,” each from a different artist. “One is by Margaret Beard,” explained Pamela, “and this is her first-ever quilt artwork display, entitled ‘As Time Goes By,’ illustrating the different intensities of Irma during the storm’s life. It is a wonderful piece and she did a good job on it! Karen Lyell used NASA photographs of the hurricane in a print design on her quilt, and exemplified what we all went through. Another is called ‘Truckin’ With Grandma!’ The artist is from Iona, and when they realized how bad the hurricane predictions were, they packed Grandma up in the van and headed to North Carolina to ride out the storm with their relatives. Roseline Young produced ‘The Winds of Irma’ with lots of overlapping layers that really gives you the feeling of the wind and the storm.” Pamela required that each quilt in “Reflections” needed some

WHAT IS COMMUNITY COMICS Each week I draw a cartoon and put it up on my FB page (Mark List) on Saturday morning, and ask all my FB friends to contribute captions for the cartoon. I also ask that everyone vote for the ones they think are the funniest. The ones with the most Likes by Monday or Tuesday get printed in the funnies pages that week. We do it simply for the fun of it. Page 20 The Island Sand Paper FortMyersBeach.news January 4, 2019
