H. Lawrence was published in 1923, and The Fox (1922) and The Ladybird (1923) were published almost at the same time. A few years before Women in Love (1920) and The Lost Girl (1921) had been published, too. These novellas and novels have more or less a common theme which is the new relationship between man and woman. The doll is modeled on a captain in the British army occupying Germany after World War I. The maker of the doll is a refugee aristocrat named Countess Johanna zu Rassentlow, also called Hannele, a single woman. She is Captain Hepburn’s mistress. His wife and children live in England. Hannele and Mitchka who is Hannele’s friend and roommate, make and sell dolls and other beautiful things for a living. Mitchka has a working house. But the captain’s doll was not made to sell but because of Hannele’s love for him. The doll has a symbolic meaning in that he is a puppet of both women, his wife and his mistress. -

Chapel Hill 2011 Approved by: Dr. Federico Luisetti Dr. Dino Cervigni Dr. Ennio Rao Dr. Amy Chambless Dr. Lucia Binotti ©2011 Jessica Turner Newth Greenfield ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT JESSICA TURNER NEWTH GREENFIELD: The Picturesque in Giovanni Verga’s Sicilian Collections (Under the direction of Federico Luisetti) Giovanni Verga’s Sicilian short story collections are known for their realistic portrayal of the Sicilian peasant farmers and their daily struggles with poverty, hunger and injustice. This study examines the way in which the author employs the pictruresque in his Sicilian novelle and argues that there is an evolution in this treatment from picturesque to non-picturesque. Initially, this study will examine the elements and techniques that Verga uses to represent the picturesque and how that treatment changes and is utilized or actively destroyed as his writing progresses. For the purposes of this dissertation, a definition of the picturesque will be established and always associated with descriptions of nature. In this study, the picturesque will correspond to those descriptions of nature that prove pleasing for a painting. By looking at seven particular novelle in Vita dei campi and Novelle rusticane, I will show that Verga’s earlier stories are littered with picturesque elements. As the author’s mature writing style, verismo, develops, Verga moves through a transtitional phase and ultimately arrives at a non-picturesque portrayal of Sicily in his short stories. -

Lawrence’s 1925 translation of the novel Mastro-don Gesualdo (1889) and some consideration of the author’s own 1995 translation of Una peccatrice (1873). Emphasis throughout is placed on the particular nature of literary translation, an activity often and inevitably influenced by factors that go beyond purely linguistic concerns. Keywords: translation praxis; translation theory; translation’s ubiquity; Verism; literary profession. 1. Verga and his English translators In literary historical terms, Giovanni Verga (1840–1922) is the leading exponent of verismo, Italy’s contribution to realism, and much of his work is (and has been for almost a century) available to readers of English. A brief description of the first ever translation in book form of one of Verga’s works and the way in which it was published will help provide us with a picture of his place in the history of literature. Mary A. Craig’s 1890 rendition of I Malavoglia in its English title abandoned the negatively loaded surname (literally it means “unwilling”) of the tragic and doomstruck family from the fishing village of Aci Trezza who are the novel’s protagonists, and made use of the name of the family’s home (La casa del Nespolo) for the more accessible, The House by the Medlar Tree. -

Giovanni Verga and Italian Realism in the Light of Recent Critical Trends
GREGORY L. LUCENTE THE HISTORICAL IMPERATIVE: GIOVANNI VERGA AND ITALIAN REALISM IN THE LIGHT OF RECENT CRITICAL TRENDS Nineteenth century Italian realism in general (or verismo) and Giovanni Verga's works in particular have received a great deal of critical attention over the past three decades. From the biographically and thematically oriented idealist treatments of the 1950s and 1960s through the post-1968 Marxist reinter- pretations of the 1970s, Verga criticism has remained in the forefront of Italian literary debates. This has been the case in large part because of the representational slant of verismo's aesthetic and because of the extraordinary complexity that any adequate theory of literary representation necessarily involves. In recent years, two trends have dominated Verga "studies: on the one hand, an interest in textual criticism, in the estab- lishing and re-editing of Verga's major texts; and on other an interest in the details of Verga's historical milieu, in recapturing the nineteenth century Sicilian environment that Verga's realist narratives endeavor, in literary terms, to re- create. While the first of these trends is a matter of editorial refinement within Verga studies, the second, in its openly historicizing tendencies, has implications that extend well be- yond Verga studies as such. This critical concern for the ma- terial particulars of everyday life within a specific sociocultural milieu furnishes an important analogy to recent American critical interest regarding the nature of literary representation, especially as that interest is manifest in the "new historicist" critical enterprise currently under way in the United States. Appendix: Lawrence’s Sexuality and his Supposed ‘Fascism’ The vexed question of Lawrence’s sexuality is exacerbated by the fact that in his lifetime any published evidence was likely to be affected by the need to avoid hostile legislation. It is clear that he was sometimes attracted by other men, this being evident from the chapter in The White Peacock where Cyril expresses his delight in George Saxton’s ath- letic body and reflects our love was perfect for a moment, more perfect than any love I have known since, either for man or woman.1 The sentiment is echoed in the unpublished ‘Prologue’ that formed the opening chapter to Women in Love. In this he noted the fact that he was rarely attracted by women, but often by men—who in such cases belonged mainly to two groups: on the one hand some who were fair, Northern, blue-eyed, crystalline, on the other, dark and viscous. In spite of this, however, there was no admission of active homo- sexuality.2 Previously, his remarks on homosexuality were extremely hostile, as witnessed by his remarks concerning the young men who gathered round John Maynard Keynes at Cambridge and the soldiers he witnessed on the sea-front in Worthing in 1915.3 Knud Merrild, who lived close to Lawrence for the winter of 1922–3, was adamant that Lawrence showed no signs of homosexuality whatever.4 In the novel Women in Love, Birkin engages in the well-known incident of wrestling with Gerald Crich, but this appears to be the closest they get to the formation of a physical relationship. -

Their intent was that of debunking a national discourse that constructed Italian Southerners as “Otherness.” My study focuses on six primary texts, five short stories, and one novel, written at the turn of the twentieth century.
