Enoch the Uncounselled Enoch the Uncounselled Joe Egerton th The 100 anniversary of the birth of Enoch Powell on 16 June has provided an opportunity for commentators to assess the lasting reputation of a man who became an infamous figure in British politics after delivering a single speech. Joe Egerton presents a paradox at the heart of Powell’s career: the same man that delivered the ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech was a devout Christian. Despite having no signed contract, the invoice was still paid, not to Cambridge Analytica but instead paid by Arron Banks to UKIP directly. This payment was then not passed onto Cambridge Analytica for the work completed, as an internal decision in UKIP, as their party was not the beneficiary of the work, but Leave.EU was. Rivers of Blood If you want a nigger for a neighbour, vote Liberal or Labour (‘unof¿cial’ slogan during the 1964 General Election Campaign in Smethwick, Birmingham).1 It is easy to think about 1968 being a year of revolution and student upheavals and the 1960s being a decade of dramatic cultural change. But while there were hippies, Àower-power, Vietnam protests, free-love, recreational drugs, and Christopher Hill, capitalism was not the only thing not overthrown. Even though the student upheavals would point to a future of increasingly liberal attitudes and the advent of cultural postmodernity, things were not-so-obvious on the ground, where reac- tions to change also manifested themselves in a number of cultural forms. The 1960s may have brought the world the music of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Kinks but it also brought spectacular success for Cliff Richard, The Sound of Music, Ken Dodd, and Engelbert Humperdinck. I then approach the British political elite’s treatment of Powell in the context of the prevailing institutionalised dislike for so-called populist politicians and populist politics in Britain, arguing that this was a ‘timely’ intervention to curb the rise of ‘ethnic’ English nationalism when Britain was moving from an Empire to a nation-state.     Enoch Powell and the Invention of Thatcherism Shivaji Sondhi* “Like The Roman: The Life of Enoch Powell” by Simon Heffer, Weidenfeld and Nicholson, London (1998). Growing up in India in the 1970s and 80s, it was impossible to avoid learning of Enoch Powell. He was a cliché - the author of the “rivers of blood” speech and ipso facto, the father of skinhead violence against commonwealth immigrants in Britain; a latter day Dyer transposed to Birmingham from Jallianwalla Bagh. I remember being slightly perplexed on coming across brief erudite pieces by him in the course of discursive reading, probably reviews in the Spectator, but not pursuing the apparent contradiction further. (As for reading the Spectator, needless to say, this happened only on those rare occasions when my copy of the Economic and Political Weekly was late.) It has come as a delight then, to come across Simon Heffer’s recent biography of the man who died last February 9th, and to discover that the cardboard Powell was fiction. In his place one finds a very complex figure who led perhaps the most remarkable career in British politics after Churchill and certainly, along with Margaret Thatcher, one of the two most consequential careers as well. I should say at the outset that this somewhat demanding exercise (961 pages of main text, to be exact!) is a friendly biography, written by a Conservative commentator and friend of Powell’s, whose admiration for his subject is evident and who is clearly concerned with the latter’s place in British political history. Heffer was invited by Powell to this task and was granted privileged access to his personal papers and allowed to interview him at some length before his death.
