Writing this in July, before my summer break, when the sun is still shining, the sky an unbroken blue, the early part of the summer at least has been very pleasant. It lifts everyone’s mood to have some fine days to enjoy, even if we don’t get away very far. It allows us to approach the new starts of the autumn with fresh energy and vigour. During a short retreat at the start of summer, I was invited to reflect on the incident in John 21 when Peter’s meeting with the risen Jesus led him to a number of fresh starts. Peter and the other disciples are back in Galilee after the risen Jesus had told them via Mary Magdalene, that he would meet them there. But we do not know how long they have been waiting and at the start of this passage Peter declares that he is going back to the fishing. The other disciples go along too, and you get the sense they have been waiting around for something new to start and when nothing seems to be happening they just go back to what they know. But of course they fish all night and catch nothing. It is only when they see the risen Lord on the beach in the morning and they respond to his command to put down the nets on the other side that the catch of fish is so big they can hardly haul it in. And out of the meeting over breakfast that follows Peter is given both a healing for his betrayal and a new commission, ‘Take care of my sheep.’ Sometimes when September rolls round again and we are back to the daily round of school and work, church life and organisations, it can feel like just going back to what we know. But like Peter and the disciples we are in a post resurrection world and Jesus is alive and meeting us in it. As for them, he can have new ways of directing us in our tasks and new tasks for us to do. Our holiday times of rest and restoration can be opportunities for God to open us to these new possibilities. Towards the end of June the Vestry met for an evening to reflect together on what new things we could start to develop in our parish life to help us fulfil the mission and calling God has given us. We have agreed on a few small steps that we can take to begin to reach out to our wider community. As part of that I have invited one of the local leaders of the Street Pastors initiative in Newtownabbey to come to speak to us about it at our 11am service on 14th September. I am sure we will find it an inspiration to hear of what can be possible when Christians work together to make a difference in the community. And there will be other small initiatives we hope to put in place as the autumn proceeds. May the gentler pace of the summer and the days of sunshine and rest truly have restored us as we come back again this autumn to the busy cycle of church life. And may we all be open to the fresh starts and renewed vision that the risen Lord has for us as we follow the path of his choosing. With every blessing,

Noon Day Prayers Please join us in church at midday on Wednesday 3rd September in our monthly time of prayer for the parish and the community. This is a short reflective time of prayer and all are welcome. Resumption of Evening Services A reminder that our normal pattern of 6.30pm Sunday evening services resumes on 7th September with Evening Prayer. 4 This is Not “Goodbye”, It’s Just a “See You Later” I write this little piece to you just a few weeks from starting to study for a Masters in Theology at The Church of Ireland Theological Institute. As the title indicates, I hope to still be around quite a bit during the first few months. After that I'll be sent on placement on weekends, where I might find myself in the wilds of Cork, or sunny Sligo, or even in bonny ! I hope to keep you updated in future magazines. Wherever I end up serving, I am so grateful for the support I've had in Carnmoney. I have been truly overwhelmed by your good wishes and generosity throughout my journey to this point. I must say a big thank you to Mercia, Carol and Valerie for their ministry, teaching, support and guidance in helping to discern God's will for me. Thanks also to the Select Vestry for their very generous gift which has been used to purchase my robes. There are so many others who have supported, taught and encouraged me on the way; Sunday School teachers, Brigade leaders and many individuals in the Parish. God has used all of you to help shape me and guide me to this point, so thank you! Above all, thanks be to God for taking me on this incredible adventure! To Him be the glory! Danielle Fellowship Group Meeting Thursday 4th September 7.30pm Memorial Room “What we talk about when we talk about God” - Following the short sermon series in August, our autumn fellowship evenings will look in more depth at Rob Bell’s book, ‘What we talk about when we talk about God.’ Using material from the book and footage from YouTube, we will journey with Rob as he opens up our understanding of just how Great our God is. Lots of room for discussion, questions to be asked and puzzled over and as usual a time for fellowship over a cuppa. Here is a little taster - Chapter 1 Hum –“I realise that when I use the word God in the title of this book there’s a good chance I’m stepping on all kinds of land mines. Is there a more volatile word loaded down with more history, assumptions, and expectations than that tired, old, relevant, electrically charged, provocative, fresh, antiquated yet ubiquitous as ever, familiar/unfamiliar word God! Come along and explore your God as never before. Safeguarding Trust Training Evening Wednesday 3rd September 7-8pm in the Memorial Room Our annual review of our Safeguarding Trust procedures will be held on the above date. It is important that everyone who has a leadership role in the church’s youth or children’s work, whether with the Sunday School, Just Us or the Brigades, attend if at all possible. Shopping Trolley Just a reminder when you are filling your shopping basket or stocking up your cupboards at home, throw in a little something extra for our Porch Shopping Trolley, dry goods, tins, cleaning materials, you will remember the list. We are very fortunate to be able to contribute through our neighbours in Carnmoney Presbyterian, who work closely with the local social services. Be assured that your contributions are not just appreciated, but for some they are a matter of food on their plate. 5 Diary for September Tuesday 2nd September 7.45pm Select Vestry Wednesday 3rd September 12noon 15-20 minute prayer time in church 7-8.00pm Safeguarding Trust Training Evening in the Memorial Room 7.30pm Dance Class restarts Thursday 4th September 7.30-9.30pm Parish Fellowship Group meet in the Memorial Room. Church of Ireland Men’s Society Well, strange as it may seem, the summer is over once again. The kids are back to school, the lawnmower is put away for another year (there is always a good side to everything) and we start talking about Christmas. Where did it all go to, or as someone recently asked me “do you remember which day summer was on this year”? But as usual, the Men’s Society Committee has been busy throughout the summer, putting together a programme of speakers and events to meet our usual high standard and to educate, amuse and entertain our highly discerning membership. The new season opens on Tuesday 9th September at 8.00pm with a blockbuster. We are privileged to have as our special guest, former Mayor of Newtownabbey, Fraser Agnew, who as well as being a busy Councillor is a prominent historian and lecturer on the history of . He will be speaking on “Carson’s Gunrunners” and the events which led to the setting up of Northern Ireland. Many families in this area had some involvement in these activities surrounding the gunrunners and the old UVF almost one hundred years ago. While many of us will have some knowledge of the events and circumstances which surrounded them, this is a unique opportunity to hear the actual story from such a knowledgeable source. Definitely not to be missed. This is the first of an interesting and varied programme of talks and events planned for the new season and as a taster we are inviting all men of the parish to come along to this open meeting where they will see what the Men’s Society has to offer. We usually meet on the second Tuesday of each month, September to May. So if you enjoy interesting speakers, good company and a nice cup of tea, why don’t you come along on Tuesday 10th and join us for what will be a very memorable evening? Trevor Gibb Recycling for Restoration Fund Last month we raised £30 from the sale of scrap metal and £25 for books. Please continue to collect all clean clothing, shoes, hats, belts and handbags, all metal, including aluminium and steel food cans, all to raise much needed funds for the church. We can also recycle electrical items, including leads, cables and anything with wiring attached, such as phones. We would be very grateful if books, electrical items, cables etc. are not put in the same bags as clothes and cans. Clothing can be left at the church hall and all items, including scrap metal, at 7 Glebecoole Park (please call Maurice or Doreen on 9084 4093 to ensure someone is at home before delivering items, as bags left are liable to be taken by other collectors or clothes get soaked by rain . So before you bin or kerbie, think recycle for the church - if in doubt ring us. Maurice Atkinson Confirmation 2015 - Advance Notice We would be due to hold a Confirmation Service in the parish during 2015. Would any young person or adult interested in being Confirmed please let the Vicar know by Monday 8th September as we have to inform the Bishop by 15th September if we wish a Confirmation service next year. Anyone considering Confirmation is also asked to attend a brief information meeting after the Family Service on 21st September in the Memorial Room following refreshments in the church hall. Parents should attend with young people wishing to go forward for Confirmation. Choir Practice Anyone interested in joining our church choir should come along at 8pm on Wednesday 10th September; you will be most welcome. For further information contact Maurice Carson on 9334 2342. 9 Last Christians Flee Mosul For the first time in nearly 2000 years, the city of Mosul in northern Iraq is without Christians. They fled this summer, after a warning from the Islamic State militants that all Christians would be put to the sword if they did not convert to Islam or agree to pay a protection tax (jizya in Arabic). So the Christians filled their cars with whatever they could fit in and fled to Dohuk and Irbil in the neighbouring region of Kurdistan. They left behind scenes of desecration - the Islamists seized control of the 4th century Syrian Catholic Mar Behnam Monastery, burned the Syriac Bishop’s office, home and library to the ground, and removed the cross from St Ephrem’s Syriac Orthodox Cathedral in Mosul and flew a black flag instead. The Syriac Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and all the East of the Syrians said, “This is a disgrace. The Christians in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon weren’t imported; we’ve been here for millennia and therefore we have the right to be treated as human beings and citizens of these countries.” Mosul’s Christian community totalled about 60,000 before the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. It then increased, as many more Christians took refuge in Mosul. But by June of this year the number had dropped to 35,000, and fell sharply even further when the Islamic State took control. On 15th June this year, for the first time in 1,600 years, there was no Christian mass said in Mosul. One Christian family, who could not get out before the deadline, and who could not afford to pay the tax, paid a cruel price when the mother and daughter were grossly assaulted by the militants. The husband, who was made to watch, was so traumatised that he then committed suicide. As the British Ambassador to Iraq, Simon Collis, said about the Islamists, “They drove Mosul’s Christians from a city they had prayed in for 1800 years. Churches were burned and houses marked with N (standing for Nasrani, an Arabic word for Christian) . The Bishop of Coventry, Dr Christopher Cocksworth, said, “The determined will of ISIS to evict Christians from Mosul and eradicate Christianity from the area they seek to control is deeply distressing… It is incumbent on us all to speak out against such injustice and violence. “ A charity called Open Doors has launched an Iraq Emergency Appeal to help the Christians who have fled the Islamic militants. £70 can provide an emergency relief pack for a family of four, to last a month. If you can help, visit - www.opendoorsuk.org/iraqcrisis or phone 01993 777300. Remembering Roy Castle – 20 Years On Roy Castle OBE – a man of many, many parts – died 20 years ago this month. As well as being known to almost everyone in the country as a TV presenter, (he hosted the very popular Record Breakers for some 20 years) he was also a talented jazz trumpet player, a singer, dancer, actor, comedian and Liverpool supporter. He appeared in several films, including Dr Who and , and starred with comedians such as and , a close friend. Everything he did was wholehearted and often innovative. For many, he was a cult figure. introduced Roy to dancer Fiona Dickson, who became his wife in 1963, and they had four children, including Ben, a top-flight jazz saxophonist known to Greenbelters for his performances with Duke Special. Roy and Fiona were committed Christians who attended their local Baptist Church. Roy found he had lung cancer in January 1992, and despite some remission, succumbed to it on 2 September 1994. Never a smoker, he felt he had caught the disease through playing in smoky jazz clubs. Earlier in 1994 he had raised money through a Tour of Hope for the erection of the building that would become the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. By that time he had been made an OBE. He had also received the Carl Alan Award, an honour voted for by members of the professional dance industry. His record for the fastest tap-dance – 1,440 taps a minute – set in January 1973, has never been bettered. Roy’s wife Fiona continued to campaign after his death for the abolition of smoking in public places, which came into effect in almost all public buildings by 2007. Many places that took the step voluntarily continue to display the Roy Castle Clean Air Award. 10 Carnmoney Parish Church Restoration Fund 2014 Below is a summary of the contributions for the 6 months up to 30th June 2014
