Handbook 1314 East Antrim Battalion Handbook Session 2013 -2014 Ballyclare Ballyeaston Ballylinney Ballynure Cairncastle Carrickfergus Greenisland Islandmagee Kilbride Larne Mullaghdubh Raloo Whitehead www.boysbrigadeni.org.uk/eastantrimbattalion [email protected] 11 Glenburn Manor Carrickfergus BT38 7TX August 2013 Dear Fellow Officers, Brigade Council will meet in Belfast during the weekend Friday 6th to Sunday 8th September 2013. A programme of events including a Civic Reception at City Hall to mark the 125th Anniversary of The Boys Brigade in Ireland, the Annual General Meeting of The Boys' Brigade and a Sunday morning service is being organised. As this is the AGM of the Brigade I trust East Antrim Battalion will be well represented. I will be there so if you wish to record a vote you can do so via proxy. The Battalion has continued to function with less meetings but hopefully still communicating with officers via the website, quarterly newsletters and facebook. If you don’t receive this information like us on facebook and register your e-mail on the website. Please remember we still hold two meeting per session and you can find the dates below. The website continues to be our main communication tool and we have had over 1,000,000 hits in last year and averaging 2000 visitors a month. Please make sure you keep up to date by visiting the site regularly and if you are involved with competitions or events please email a report to [email protected] so that the site is kept up to date. In April we held a very successful quiz evening in Ballynure and that event replaced our AGM. During April 2014 we will hold our tri annual AGM with election of Officers over a meal in Ballylinney. I would ask that each company take a particular interest in this event. Please not that our Secretary has indicated her intentions to stand down and all other posts are up for re-election. The Battalion constitution only allows for 2 three year terms. I would like to express my appreciation to all officers who worked at District, Company and Battalion level throughout the last session. As we celebrate 125th years of BB in Ireland I invite all companies to join us at our Annual Church Parade and dedication of Officers on Sunday 6th Octobers in 1st Larne. We invite Anchors to line the route with Juniors and Company parading. Full details of the route and times will be e-mail to all captains and posted on the website. The Battalion hope to be presenting each company with a small gift to mark the occasion. So at the start of a new session can I encourage you to get involved more with your Company. Give that little bit extra and collectively we can achieve our object of Advancing Christ's Kingdom among boys. God bless you in this new session. Yours sincerely Drew Buchanan MBE Battalion President 2 Dates for Session 2013/14 September Tuesday 17th Executive 1st Ballylinney October Sunday 6th Annual Church Parade 1st Larne & Officers’ Dedication November Tuesday 12th Battalion Councils Training 3rd Larne December Anchor/Junior Carol Service 1st Ballylinney February 2014 Wednesday 12th Executive 8th Carrickfergus April 2014 Battalion AGM / Dinner with election of Officers 1st Ballylinney ================================== Deputy Mayor, Mr Terry Clements, Battalion President, Mr Drew Buchanan MBE and Battalion Chaplain Rev. We give thanks for the foresight of our founder William Alexander Smith as we celebrate 125 years of Boys’ Brigade in Northern Ireland. 2012 -2013 has been yet another busy year within our Battalion. In August 2012 we were privileged and honoured to be part of Her Majesty the Queens’ Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. We were the first Boys’ Brigade Battalion in Northern Ireland to receive the message from Her Majesty as it travelled around Ireland and the United Kingdom. Officers and Boys from all sections along with the Mayor of the Borough and a local MP met in 1st Carrickfergus for a short service and light supper. Many photographs were taken. On Sunday 7th October 2012 we held our Annual Battalion Church Parade and Officers Dedication Service in Carrickfergus which was attended by the Deputy Mayor. We were again blessed with wonderful weather and a wonderful attendance of 16 out of 23 Companies present, it was very rewarding to witness Saint Nicholas Church packed with Officers and Boys from the Boys’ Brigade. The Christian Education Exam trophies were presented, congratulations to all who received a trophy and gift voucher. Also congratulations to 1st Raloo Junior Section who were awarded the Fitzell Trophy and 8th Carrickfergus Company who were awarded the McCune Trophy. The year was very busy with lots of competitions being held at Company section level, Golf, Indoor Bowls, Table Tennis, 5-a-side and 7-a-side Football tournaments, Volleyball and Badminton. Thanks to all the officers who arranged and organised these competitions. The Junior Section also had a busy year with 3rd Ballyclare finishing runners up in the NID Quiz Kids Final. 1st Raloo will represent our Battalion in the NID Figure Marching Competition. Many congratulations to Daniel Sharpe of 2nd Carrickfergus and Timothy Moore of 3rd Ballyclare who finished in 1st and 2nd place in the Young Musician of the Year competition. Anchors also had a busy and varied year with Colouring in competitions and Fun and Games night. Congratulations to all boys from all sections who won trophies. All these events and competition could not be held if it were not for the dedication of all the officers who arrange each event. We would like to express our thanks to all the Officers and Leaders who work hard each and every week within the Battalion, we appreciate the loyalty and work that is carried out with the aim of the Boys’ Brigade, the Advancement of Christ’s Kingdom amongst boys, being the centre of this work. The Executive hope and pray that all officers are continuing to prepare and provide a varied programme for all boys at all levels for the next upcoming session starting September 2013. We also would like to express our thanks to all those who are involved in duties at NID level and thank them for all their hard work at that level.

I send greetings in the name of the executive wishing all companies God’s blessing on whatever your plans are this session. At the start of our Golden Jubilee celebrations it’s only natural that we look back and give thanks for the work of those 50 years. To officers and boys, many who are now officers, we thank you for your contribution to the work of the Battalion in advancing Christ’s Kingdom among boys. 50 years ago in Northern Ireland the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association was founded. Myrina is launched from the Musgrave Yard slipway at Harland and Wolff, the first super tanker and largest ship built in the United Kingdom. Taoiseach Jack Lynch and Prime Minister of Northern Ireland Terence O’Neill meet for talks at Stormont. So as we look forward to celebrating 50 years, we are thankful to Donald Blair, who has been in Greenisland Boys’ Brigade for over 50 years, for agreeing to record the history of the Battalion in words and pictures. We will celebrate further with dinner on Thursday 27th April 2017 and we will hold our tri-annual AGM that night and we look forward to new talent coming through to fill the posts.

  • The Registry Books Are Approximately
THETHE REGISTRYREGISTRY BOOKSBOOKS Page 2 Clifton Street Cemetery One of the most historically interesting facets of any burying ground are, without doubt, its registry books. Although the New Burying Ground was opened in 1797, it was not until 1831 that the Belfast Charitable Society began to keep a registry of all interments. It is unknown why they did not keep a registry from the beginning, but one reason may be that they were more interested in making money to finance the poor-house through the selling of the graves, than to worry about recording who was being buried in them. However at a meeting held in the poor-house on the 18th of December 1830 it was: Resolved -that a registry of all the interments in the Burying Ground of the Charitable Society be kept from the commencement of the next year, and that the Rev. Messrs Macartney and Hicks be requested to have a suitable book prepared for the purpose. The first burial recorded was on the 4th of January, 1831. However, the exact number of people buried in the burying ground before that will never be known. At a rough estimate it could be guessed that around 3,600 burials could have taken place before 1831. That is if up to 100 people had been buried per year, which was below the average amount of burials taking place throughout the 1830s. The figures shown in the three volumes of the registry books are approximately: Volume 1 1831-1841, 2,640 Volume 2 1841-1864, 5,489 Volume 3 1865-1984, 3,109 Add on the pre-1831 figures and the number of those buried in the New Burying Ground could be as high as 14,000.
