Band of Friends 31 januari 2015 De Boerderij, Zoetermeer What began by two of the former companions of Rory Gallagher, Gerry McAvoy and Ted McKenna as a gee-great- this-Rory-music-we-should-do-something-with-it has turned out to become a band of name and fame. The Dutch guitarist Marcel Scherpenzeel plays with the band for several years now. After a first CD / DVD, which was released last year, they made a big step forward. On January 31, 2015 Band of Friends had a gig at De Boerderij in Zoetermeer as part of their European tour. From the first note the attention of the audience is grabbed and was not released until about two hours later the last notes of the encore ringing through the room. With Gerry as director of both the band and the audience one after the other Gallagher song is launched. Building on the solid rhythm section Marcel handles the vocals and the fabulous guitar work. Well-known songs like "Bought And Sold", "Calling Card" and "A Million Miles Away" are sung along by the audience. Halfway through the show some time is devoted to play some original songs, which are on last year’s CD/DVD "Too Much Is Not Enough". The main part of the show is composed of Rory Gallagher songs, but it is clear that Marcel Scherpenzeel is no Rory clone. He plays the songs in the spirit of Rory, but clearly has its own input. What all these years clearly has not changed is the boundless energy and obvious enjoyment, with which the band plays. And it has its effect on to the public, that has witnessed an excellent performance. .

THE STORY OF SONNY BOY SLIM Ever since 2010, when Gary Clark Jr. wowed audiences with electrifying live sets everywhere from the Crossroads Festival to Hollywood’s historic Hotel Café, his modus operandi has remained crystal clear: “I listen to everything…so I want to play everything.” The revelation that is the Austin-born virtuoso guitarist, vocalist and songwriter finds him just as much an amalgamation of his myriad influences and inspirations. OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHY If ever there was a “musician’s musician” then that accolade surely belongs to Rory Gallagher. Renowned for his blistering live performances and highly respected for his dedication to his craft, he died in 1995, aged just 47, yet his reputation has continued to flourish in the years since. Indeed, some of rock’s most seminal figures, from Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton, Queen’s Brian May to The Smiths’ Johnny Marr, have cited him as an influence. Clapton credited Rory with “getting me back into the blues”, while May has unequivocally stated: “I owe Rory Gallagher my sound.” Rory remains a touchstone for all would-be guitar heroes in the 21st Century, yet the rural Ireland he grew up in even barely acknowledged the arrival of rock’n’roll. When he was born William Rory Gallagher, in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, in 1948, his father was working for the Irish Electricity Supply Board, constructing a hydroelectric power plant on the River Erne above the town. Later, Rory, with his younger brother Dónal, moved to Cork with their mother, Monica, the boys attended the city’s North Monastery School. Monica Gallagher sang and had acted with Ballyshannon’s Abbey Players, so the Gallagher boys’ early musical inclinations were indulged by their parents. Rory, especially, showed precocious talent, first mastering ukulele and then graduating to acoustic and, finally, electric guitar. Unable to find – or even afford – records, the young Rory stayed up late and listened attentively to Radio Luxembourg and the American Forces Network, where he first heard rock’n’roll legends Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and Lonnie Donegan, before later discovering two of his biggest influences, Muddy Waters and Lead Belly.

SAVOY BROWN BIOGRAPHY Savoy Brown was formed by guitarist Kim Simmonds in 1965 in London, England and is one of the longest running blues/rock bands in existence. Simmonds has been the group's guiding hand from the first singles released in 1966 through the band's newest effort Aint Done Yet, their 41st album, to be released in September 2020 on QVR records. Energetic blues has been the calling card of the band from the beginning. "Blues rock" became the catch-all phrase in the late 1960s to describe the band's music along with that of contemporaries such as Cream, Fleetwood Mac and Jimi Hendrix. In fact, in the 2013 drama film, Jimi Hendrix: All Is By My Side, Savoy Brown's song “Train To Nowhere” was included in the soundtrack. Many of the band's singles and albums have appeared on the Billboard Hot Hundred charts including songs such as “I’m Tired”, “Train To Nowhere” and “Tell Mama” and albums such as Hellbound Train. In 2017, the album Witchy Feelin’ reached #1 on the Billboard Blues chart. Savoy Brown established national status in the 1970s by headlining iconic stages such as Carnegie Hall and Royal Albert Hall. The story continues to this day with Simmonds being helped along by Scott Holt on guitar and vocals, Pat DeSalvo on bass and Garnet Grimm on drums. Simmonds said, “I still have the same energy as I had in my twenties and I have never stopped enjoying entertaining a crowd and giving people inspiration." Savoy Brown and Kim Simmonds have a body of work matched by only a small portion of musical artists.
