A filmmaker from a reinvented time, a craftsman perpetually probing the question of the human condition, tireless seeker of the fundamentals of this world, through his nine feature films, four shorts and one TV movie, Béla Tarr has fashioned a radical and visionary body of work with a fascinating formal beauty. Lisandro Alonso burst onto the international stage in 2001 with his first, radical film, La Libertad, and quickly became one of the leading figures of the “Nuevo Cine Argentino”. Over five movies, he has built a singular, outlandish body of work, bearing his talent for poetry, metaphysical questioning, and dramaturgy. In 2014, he presented his latest film, Jauja, in the Festival de Cannes sidebar . A dreamlike, dazzling, quixotic narrative, this mesmerizing film saw the first collaboration between the director and the world-renowned actor, Viggo Mortensen.

Born in 1948, Bille August is a Danish director whose work often focuses on descriptions of childhood and adolescence and the illusions therein. In 1992, he won his second Palme d’Or at the Festival de Cannes for , based on a screenplay by , four years after first winning for , which also won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. This puts him in the exclusive club of seven directors who have won Cannes’ top honor twice. In 1993, he brought ’s novel The House of Spirits for the big screen, the first of a series of literary adaptations including Smilla’s Sense of Snow in 1996 based on Peter Hoeg’s book, then Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables in 1997.

Jason Clarke began his acting career in his native Australia, before going on to become the latest Hollywood pin-up. His imposing frame and piercing gaze prompted to give him a role in Public Enemies. Star of Terminator Genisys by Alan Taylor, Dawn of the by Matt Reeves, Zero Dark Thirty by , and more recently Everest by Baltasar Kormakur, Jason Clarke has gradually emerged as one of the leading figures in US cinema.

Passionate about acting from a tender age, Suzanne Clément made her big-screen debut at 26 in ’s The Confessionnal. In 2009, the film scooped three awards when it screened in Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. The world simultaneously discovered this actress from along with director , whose muse she would become. Lawrence Anyways, his next film which screened in Un Certain Regard in 2012, saw Suzanne Clément pick up the Best Actress award, which was followed by a stunning performance in Mommy, which won the Prix du Jury at Cannes in 2014. She has also worked with talented filmmakers such as Michael Rowe, Bouli Lanners and Jean-Jacques Zilbermann.

In 1999, Bruno Dumont won the Grand Prix du Jury and the shared Best Actor Prize at the Festival de Cannes for Humanité, his second feature film, instantly making him one the major directors on the international scene. Something of a maverick, he relentlessly adheres to a radical vision of filmmaking. His unique body of work, that runs against the grain of contemporary French production, is hailed around the world. In 2006, he won the Grand Prix du Jury at the Festival de Cannes for Flanders, and in 2013, he presented in competition in Berlin. His latest film, , screened in competition at this year’s Festival de Cannes.

Kalki Koechlin is of French origin and grew up in southern India. She studied theater in before moving to Bombay to launch her career as an actress. In 2009, she learned in the space of six months to secure her first screen role in Dev D by . Her smile, and above all her on-screen liberty, which had not been seen before in India, won over audiences and thrust her to forefront of the Indian “New Wave”. As the first Western actress to win the hearts of the Indian public, she switched between major productions and independent movies, and lately starred in one of the biggest hits in the history of Indian cinema, (This Youth is Crazy), which drew more than 18 million admissions.

Fatima Harandi « Raouia » started out in theater, and made her movie debut in the , thanks to the Moroccan director Mohamed El Abbazi, who offered her a role in his film Les Trésors de l’Atlas. Her talent and energy were soon sought by filmmakers such as Saâd Chraïbi, Jillali Ferhati, Nour-Eddine Lakhmari, and Narjiss Nejjar. Fatima Harandi « Raouia » also broke through on the international stage, working on many films, including And Now Ladies and Gentlemen by Claude Lelouch, Stranded by Hugues and Sandra Martin, and Of Gods and Men by Xavier Beauvois.
