Spirituality in the African National Congress Struggle for Liberation in South Africa
SPIRITUALITY IN THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS STRUGGLE FOR LIBERATION IN SOUTH AFRICA 1912 - 1996 BY: NKHUMELENI A. MASUTHATown SUBMITTED lN PARTIAL FULFILMENTCape OF THE REQUIREMENTSof FOR MASTER OF ARTS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN University SUPERVISOR: DR L.W MAZAMISA SEPTEMBER 1997 The copyright of this thesis vests in the author. University ABSTRACT This thesis traces the influence of Spirituality on the African National Congress (ANC) struggle for liberation in South Africa ( 1912 - 1996). It therefore demonstrates how God has been operating in the South African conflict situation. Stories about Che Guevara ·s involvement in the struggle for freedom in Cuba and Bolivia and Dietrich Bonhocffcr's participation in the war against Nazism in Gcnnany have been included in this work in order to expose the universality of spirituality. The main focus of this work is the practice of the AN C struggle for Ii bcration between 1912 and 1996. When the history is read and S)'nthesizcd from a Christian perspective it relates well to the biblical story about the liberation of the Israelites from the Egyptian bondage. The main source of infonnation has been both primary and secondary documents. Content analysis as a research method has been mainly used in order to identify Christian traits such as selflessness, brotherly love, mercy, ability to forgive, gratuity and compassion as signs of the presence and influence of spirituality in the behaviour of the leadership of the ANC Townin this struggle for South Africa. -

It is another highlight in an already extraordinary career, and quite unlike anything that American audiences have seen him do to date." – Vincent Canby, New York Times “Visually speaking, the film is handsome….Then again, perhaps the real secret to PELLE’s demographic-crossing appeal is the presence of the great von Sydow…” – A.A. Dowd, AV Club “In Bille August's PELLE THE CONQUEROR, Max von Sydow is so astoundingly evocative that he makes your bones ache.” – Hal Hinson, The Washington Post “The film is a richness of events….there is not a bad performance in the movie, and the newcomer, Pelle Hvenegaard, never steps wrong in the title role....It is Pelle, not Lasse, who is really at the center of the movie, which begins when he follows his father’s dream, and ends as he realizes he must follow his own.” – Roger Ebert, RogerEbert.com SYNOPSIS Lasse (Max von Sydow), an elderly and widowed farmer, and his young son Pelle join a boat-load of immigrants to escape from impoverished rural Sweden to Denmark's Baltic island of Bornholm. -

GIVING VOICE TO MANDELA: AN ANALYSIS OF ACCENT ACQUISITION INTERVENTION FOR THE ROLE OF NELSON MANDELA IN THE FILM MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM A CASE STUDY THESIS Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS of The University of the Witwatersrand By FIONA RAMSAY HORSTHEMKE June 2014 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Declaration I declare that this is my own unaided work. It is submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Masters of Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It has not been submitted before for any other degree or examination in any other university. ……………………………………………….. FIONA RAMSAY HORSTHEMKE June 2014 ! "! Acknowledgements Voice practitioners uphold a tradition of acknowledging their master teachers and their influence on one’s own teaching practice and methods developed. Apart from the respect accorded these teachers, this tradition connects an individual practice to a broader voice practice and to a culture of voice coaching. I have not been influenced by one master teacher, but rather learnt from a variety of teachers and coaches who I have worked with over my years as an actress and coach in the industry. My technique and process have not only been affected by directors, teachers and coaches but by the many students and actors I have coached in classrooms, rehearsal rooms and on film sets, for 30 and years whose passion and commitment to their craft and to learning has inspired me. My work ethic was initially motivated by my first ballet teacher Josie Pretorius and furthered by my Spanish dancing teacher Mercedes Molina. Both instilled in me an understanding of the need for discipline of body and mind to succeed not only in the arts industry, but as a general tenet in life. -

A Reading of James Gregory's Goodbye Bafana
Questioning Legacies, Fashioning the Postcolonial Self: A Reading of James Gregory’s Goodbye Bafana: Nelson Mandela, My Prisoner, My Friend Laura Giovannelli Università di Pisa But here I am! It’s my choice now! And I’ll tell you this: if Mandela did something wrong, I don’t want to hear about it. Something, something has got to survive out of all of this. (Antjie Krog, Country of My Skull 339) Generally frowned upon by Mandela’s biographers, disregarded by academic criticism, and dismissingly received in South Africa as partly fabricated evidence, the memoir Goodbye Bafana: Nelson Mandela, My Prisoner, My Friend still needs to be properly assessed.1 Without sounding apologetic, the analysis should attempt to trace the author’s dynamic process of self-representation, the modes through which his ethnic and cultural imaginary worked, and the different attitudes and reactions he endeavoured to portray, from his childhood on a farm in KwaZulu-Natal in the 1940s to the momentous “Sunday the 11th” (Gregory 476), the day Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison (11 February 1990). James Gregory (1941-2003), the author of this book lying midway between autobiographical writing, prison narrative, and a historical account relating to no less an icon than Madiba, was not a professional writer. He was one of the warders who, alongside Jack Swart, Christo Brand, and Major Marais, found themselves cementing a friendship with DOI: 10.13137/2283-6438/17425 161 the “main man” (Gregory 17), political prisoner ‘Number One’ as well as future Father of the Nation. Such a connection, which Afrikaner Gregory hastened to popularize by means of a book strategically published in 1995, when Mandela’s position as the first black President of a democratic South Africa was firmly established, did not pass unquestioned and predictably received controversial responses concerning the veracity of the account, its breach of trust and its working as a highway to popularity and profit.
