The Royal Banquet Hall of King Herod the Great in Jerusalem Archaeological discoveries near the Temple Mount Robin Ngo Did archaeologists find the royal banqueting complex of King Herod the Great in Jerusalem? Hebrew University of Jerusalem professor Joseph Patrich and Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Shlomit Weksler-Bdolah believe so, and they present the find in “Old, New Banquet Hall by the Temple Mount” in the March/April 2017 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review. According to Patrich and Weksler-Bdolah, this dining complex “is arguably the most splendid Herodian building to have survived the Roman destruction of Jerusalem.” One of the two dining halls that comprised the royal Part of the building complex in question was first banqueting complex of King Herod the Great. Three discovered by pioneering archaeologist Charles attached pilasters are still visible on the wall. Photo: Assaf Warren (later Sir Charles Warren) in 1867. Warren Peretz, IAA. had excavated a magnificent hall, which he called the Free Masons Hall, some 400 feet from where the Jerusalem Temple stood. The building was investigated again in the 1960s, but it wasn’t until the renewed excavations, led by Alexander Onn of the Israel Antiquities Authority between 2007 and 2012, that the complex was uncovered in its entirety. The recent exploration revealed a building that Patrich and Weksler-Bdolah believe to be the royal banqueting complex of King Herod the Great, located only 75 feet from the Western Wall of the Temple Mount. An elaborate room identical to Warren’s Free Masons Hall, dubbed the Western Hall, was found; archaeologists now believe these were dining halls (see Rooms 21 and 23 below). -

Jerusalem's Cardo (Shopping Center) Also known as Cardo Maximus Medeba Map A 6th century church floor in Medeba, Jordan has a mosaic map of the land of Israel with numerous place names in Greek. The center of the map is an open‐ faced depiction of Jerusalem with the city walls, gates, churches (with red roofs), and the Cardo. This main street of the city is depicted with two rows of colonnades running the length of the city from north to south. Excavations Uncovered by Nahman Avigad's team in the 1970s, the Cardo in the Jewish Quarter was excavated for about 200 meters. This portion dates to the time of Emperor Justinian in the first half of the 6th c. A.D. An earlier portion of the Cardo was constructed in the Roman period beginning at the modern Damascus Gate in the north, but it didn't stretch this far south until centuries later. 1 The Main Street The central street of the Cardo is 40 feet (12 m) wide and is lined on both sides with columns. The total width of the street and shopping areas on either side is 70 feet (22 m), the equivalent of a 4‐lane highway today. This street was the main thoroughfare of Byzantine Jerusalem and served both residents and pilgrims. Large churches flanked the Cardo in several places. Shopping Area The columns supported a wooden (no longer preserved) roof that covered the shopping area and protected the patrons from the sun and rain. Today the Byzantine street is about 6 meters below the present street level, indicating the level of accumulation in the last 1400 years. -

There were 59 societies represented. The Convention began with regis- tration early Saturday morning and with committee meetings. Commit- tees that met were the Credentials Committee, Mileage Committee, Balloting Committee and Hospital- ity Committee. Mass followed with State Chap- lain Father Gary Janak presiding. Pictured at left is Betty Vacek. Pictured at right is Donna Janda. The Mass featured Alice Wright Marriage as the Fifth Gospel playing the piano and Betty Vacek leading the Choir. After Mass, registration continued and was followed by lunch, dur- ing which a presentation was given by delegates Margaret Ryan and Bea Jarzombek, sisters of Sister Rebecca Janacek. .................................. page 3 A slideshow was shown and they spoke of Sister Rebecca’s work in Rotu, East Africa. In the course of 20 centuries, millions of Christians have made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, with their goal being Jerusalem as the most important place to journey to and pray at its holy sites – and with Bethlehem a close second. -

In the modern period, many and diverse explanations of Herod‘s actions have been put forward, but previous approaches have often been hamstrung by inadequate and disproportionate use of either form of evidence. My analysis incorporates both forms while still keeping important criticisms of both in mind. Both forms of evidence, archaeological and historical, have biases, and it is important to consider their nuances and limitations as well as the information they offer. In the first chapter, I describe the most important previous approaches to the person of Herod and evaluate both the theoretical paradigms as well as the methodologies which governed them. -

Fr. Bob Thames Newsletter April 2020 All of you there, my best Prayer for a Blessed Easter to all of you. Just thought as I haven't much to do, with the quarantine, that I would write to all of you telling about here. Greetings to all of you there who are interested in what happens here in our place in Bolivia. I will call this letter our Mid-April letter. And why? Because of the importance of Holy Week and Easter for you all and for us. Our Holy Week began with the Saturday before Palm Sunday. We read the Gospel of John 12, 1-11, Mary anointing the feet of Jesus in their house after the resurrection of Lazaro, her brother. Because of just a reading and listening by the kids, as it seemed me to be of less an impact that would be remembered, we acted out the readings along with the readings for all of the Holy Week services. We then began this method with this celebration. I would explain afterwards then the importance of the reading and how it should affect our living of this Gospel in our house, school, and beyond. We then did the same for Palm Sunday without the long passion reading, only the entry into Jerusalem along with the cleansing of the temple. If any of you haven’t read Bargil Pixner’s book “Paths of the Messiah: Jesus and Jewish Christianity in light of Archeological Discoveries” I highly recommend it if you have interest in early Christian history (Ignatius Press, San Francisco, 2010). -

Introduction Islamicjerusalem is a unique place, although archaeological discoveries and historical statements in literary sources indicate that it was always suffering lack of water resources, the most important basic element of human settlement and development (Kenyon, 1974: 38), but the association of God and religious signifıcance were the main components that encouraged urban development there. Indeed, ali believers of the three monotheistic religions agree that the historical names of the city mean, especially, reverence and veneration, but they differ in interpreting its identity, especially when it is based on the political backgrounds, religious intolerance and greed inherited from preceding generations. -

27th Jewish Culture Festival: Jerusalem June 24th – July 2nd, 2017 Kraków, Poland Program report 27 edition of the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow was entirely dedicated to Jerusalem. In 1967, after Six-Day War, Jerusalem was reunited. What were social, cultural and political results of that act? What Jerusalem means to those, who live there, who visit; to each and every one of us? Is it more earthly or rather heavenly Jerusalem? 27th JCF gave a possibility for a personal encounter with the city, enabled to experience its diversity, richness, beauty and to explore Jerusalem’s many layers. 27the Jewish Culture Festival was held under Honorary Patronage of President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda. Małopolska Region was a Main Partner of the Jewish Culture Festival. In the year 2017 Jewish Culture Festival Society was accepted to the European Festival Association and received a special label Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe.
