  • Revisiting Transnational Media Flow in Nusantara: Cross-Border Content Broadcasting in Indonesia and Malaysia
Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 49, No. 2, September 2011 Revisiting Transnational Media Flow in Nusantara: Cross-border Content Broadcasting in Indonesia and Malaysia Nuurrianti Jalli* and Yearry Panji Setianto** Previous studies on transnational media have emphasized transnational media organizations and tended to ignore the role of cross-border content, especially in a non-Western context. This study aims to fill theoretical gaps within this scholarship by providing an analysis of the Southeast Asian media sphere, focusing on Indonesia and Malaysia in a historical context—transnational media flow before 2010. The two neighboring nations of Indonesia and Malaysia have many things in common, from culture to language and religion. This study not only explores similarities in the reception and appropriation of transnational content in both countries but also investigates why, to some extent, each had a different attitude toward content pro- duced by the other. It also looks at how governments in these two nations control the flow of transnational media content. Focusing on broadcast media, the study finds that cross-border media flow between Indonesia and Malaysia was made pos- sible primarily in two ways: (1) illicit or unintended media exchange, and (2) legal and intended media exchange. Illicit media exchange was enabled through the use of satellite dishes and antennae near state borders, as well as piracy. Legal and intended media exchange was enabled through state collaboration and the purchase of media rights; both governments also utilized several bodies of laws to assist in controlling transnational media content. Based on our analysis, there is a path of transnational media exchange between these two countries.

Following requests from several younger conference participants who were looking forward to presenting at their first international conference and networking with established colleagues in their field, we have prepared this book of abstracts together with the program. We hope that you, our intended ASAA 2020 delegates, will use this document as a way to discover the breadth of research being undertaken and reach out to other scholars. Several of you have kindly recognised how much work went into preparing the program for our 600 participants. We think this is a nice way to at least share the program in an accessible format and to allow you all to see the exciting breadth of research on Asia going on in Australia and in the region.

  • A Political Dance in the Rain Queer Short Film in Indonesia and the Cinematic Creation of Social and Material Spaces for Argument
A Political Dance in the Rain Queer Short Film in Indonesia and the Cinematic Creation of Social and Material Spaces for Argument Rosalia Namsai Engchuan Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle, Germany [email protected] Abstract Queer films are largely absent from Indonesian cinema and television screens due to the country’s current climate of LGBT ‘moral panic’. This article examines how, two decades after the reformation, Indonesian film practitioners are forced to navigate complex configurations of power and knowledge—negotiating social, political, and religious entanglements through their cinematic practices. My analysis is focused on komunitas film (film community/ies) and, more specifically, events and activities sur- rounding Luhki Herwanayogi’s short film On Friday Noon (2016), which chronicles the emotionally and physically fraught journey of a transgender Muslim woman as she seeks to perform Friday prayers. Drawing on this example, the article explores the dis- ruptive potential of cinematic practice to challenge and nullify the ostensible binary between Islam and queerness, showing alternative ways of being Muslim in contem- porary Indonesia, where piety and sexual identity often come together in unexpected ways. Keywords LGBT – alternative cinema – performative-art activism – queer Islam © rosalia namsai engchuan, 2020 | doi:10.1163/22134379-bja10002 This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the CC-BY-NCDownloaded4.0

Research Portfolio of Hanny Savitri Hartono Collated for Examination for PhD (Posthumously) by Supervisors: Graeme MacRae, Massey University; Sharyn Graham Davies, Auckland University of Technology; and Barbara Andersen, Massey University The attached portfolio includes the chapters of Vitri’s partially-completed PhD thesis, as well as several articles published in refereed journals, and other minor publications and unpublished work. The PhD Thesis The topic of the thesis is the way in which Muslim mothers in Java, Indonesia, negotiate a media landscape dominated by un-Islamic material and values, while trying to live their own lives and bring up their children in a properly Islamic way. Research was conducted both in the city of Semarang and by way of a closed Facebook group. The topic lies at the intersection of media studies and anthropology, Islamic studies and parenting studies, and is informed by wide reading of literatures from all these fields. We estimate the PhD thesis to be around around 80% complete: • Six substantive chapters are complete, amounting to a total of approximately 70 000 words. • The introduction is partly written and the conclusion is not written. • Abstract and references are included. We have presented this material as it stands, rather than proofread and edited. Publications The primary publications included are four journal articles, directly related to her PhD research. Three are published in peer-reviewed journals, the fourth is under review: 1. “Muslim mothers and Indonesian gossip shows in everyday life”, Indonesia and the Malay World 43 (126), pp. 298-316. 2015. 2. “'How Funny (This Country Is)': A Moral and Religious Debate Through the Lens of an Indonesian Film”, New Zealand Journal of Asian Studies 17 (1): 79-96.
