The Clash was--and still is--one of the most important groups of the late s and early s. Collectively they created some of the best and most memorable music of the era--music that remains fresh, powerful, and relevant today. And just as Strummer wasn't really leading a revolution, he wasn't even really leading his own band. To ask other readers questions about Redemption Song , please sign up. Oct 25, Dave Purcell rated it really liked it Shelves: music. Recorded quickly and with little forethought, their eponymous debut LP — 14 fast, tough, hooky, furiously funny protest songs that last 35 minutes, including a six-minute reggae cover — is a masterpiece that defined a youth culture. Music journalist Chris Salewicz was a friend to Strummer for close to three decades and has covered the Clash's career and the entire punk movement from its inception. Sort order. Average rating 4. I discovered the joys of Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros recognizable for providing the music to Brangelina's steamy tango in 'Mr. The Clash was--and still is--one of the most important groups of the late s and early s. Jun 23, Sarah rated it it was amazing. An editor would have assisted a lot. Hundreds and hundreds of pages. From that rather trad band, he was recruited by the theoretically left-wing schemer-manager Bernie Rhodes to join the punk radicals the Clash in A missed chance. After several exotic postings, the family settled in London when John was 7. View all 6 comments. Chris Salewicz was an intimate friend of Strummer's for over 25 years. More interesting. Those lives might well have changed again a few times, but that extraordinarily potent combination of idealistic heart-on-sleeve leftwing politics, perfect pitch musical heritage and impeccable rebel style was utterly irresistible to a certain sort of male who came to musical consciousness sometime in the late 70s. Wonderful book about a wonderful life that was truly lived to the fullest. This is a double disappointment; when I saw on the jacket cover that he has also written a bio of Billy Bragg, I was pretty psyched to read it. That's the best and most moving thing about this book which is a serious work of scholarship. He uses his vantage point to write the definitive biography of Strummer, charting his enormous worldwide success, his bleak years in the wilderness after the Clash's bitter breakup, and his triumphant return to stardom at the end of his life. Nov 24, Ryan rated it really liked it. This book was a true labour of love by its author whose book on Reggae I also enjoyed. In other words, a great man and a fantastic person to have a beer with at the neighborhood bar--even if he had never written a song in his life. Writing music bios is hard — even generous advances have a way of disappearing before the job is done right, with overresearched childhoods and rushed endgames common, especially if the writer has no academic salary to fall back on. It took me forever to read this, but every moment spent reading I gleaned more knowledge of the man and his views of the world, himself, music and others. Hutchence said "You must know that - you're Joe Strummer! Absorb it. I feel sorry for the women in his life though ;. Salewicz deploys a vast weight of fact and opinion to point up this upbeat conclusion and, despite the nagging sense that he is wishing as much as knowing, you can't help but pray that he is right. Rockabilly, Latin, Reggae- all of which and more can be heard throughout the Clash's discography. Redemption Song: The Definitive Biography of Joe Strummer Writer Strummer jumped feet first into both America and Spain- we get to hear about how he went on a quest to find the grave of murdered Spanish poet Frederico Garcia Lorca and actually met and wrote lyrics with famous American poet Alan Ginsberg. Joe One of the best biographies I have read in a long time. On the negative side, this book could have used some serious editing. Chris Salewicz. Maybe that's right and maybe he did, although he was professional enough to not be sloppy on stage, and somehow his interviews, which you can find on YouTube, are great examples of the articulate honesty which continues to endear him to fans long after his death. I knew a lot of things about Strummer from all kinds of books on punk and on the Clash, and from listening to his music on an almost daily basis for the last twenty years. He helped me the most when I was in the middle of getting divorced and he shored me up. Strummer was the real deal, and a book that covers his life pre- and post-Clash was long overdue. No, he was much more interesting than that. Soo, the book gets a little more interesting after about page , especially when Salewicz makes comparisons between the Clash and Sex Pistols. I also learned tons about John Mellor, th Probably required reading for anyone who like me got the Clash. Strummer carried a lot of baggage with him, namely the tragic death of his older brother. Over all, however, this book is a disappointment. Except if you read this book, you'll realize that Strummer was much more than that - a funny, smart, passionate, messed up genius who spent the last 15 years of his life regretting the mistakes he made with the Clash before ultimately creating and leading another group the Mescaleros and briefly enjoying living legend status before his untimely death. The Clash fizzled out ignominiously a few years after that underwhelming night at the Lyceum, having morphed into the Clash Mark II, aka "the dodgy Clash". Throughout the book, he treats women badly - I know, judg Many funny anecdotes, insightful stories - but some dull stretches in the book too. No trivia or quizzes yet. I remember the night he snapped at me in the dressing room at St. Nov 24, Ryan rated it really liked it. Their eponymous first record and London Calling still rank in Rolling Stone's top-ten best albums of all time, and in they were officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A superb biography from a friend of the subject who also happened to be a journalist with total access through the punk era and beyond. A laborious consideration of the life of the Clash's late front man. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. He never tires of telling us that he had a few beers with Joe strummer now and then or that Joe thought he was a great guy. You know the saying: There's no time like the present His elder brother - who had become obsessed with the occult and Nazism - had committed suicide. Overall, the book left me amazed at Strummer's charisma, brilliance, humor, and above all, humanity. But Salewicz is wary of emphasizing this. He toured quite a bit near the end with the Mescaleros and often played a heavy rotation of Clash songs and I never saw him. After reading this book i have a greater sense of who Joe was and why he did what he did. The definitive biography of Joe Strummer, released with a new epilogue to mark the 60th anniversary of his birth. Redemption Song: The Definitive Biography of Joe Strummer Reviews This book was a true labour of love by its author whose book on Reggae I also enjoyed. Take this somewhere. Every Clash fan should read this, it truly is the definitive biography of the Punk Rock Warlord. Original Title. Salewicz deploys a vast weight of fact and opinion to point up this upbeat conclusion and, despite the nagging sense that he is wishing as much as knowing, you can't help but pray that he is right. We learn about Joe's womanizing and somewhat hypocritical at times political philosophies. With exclusive access to Strummer's friends, relatives, and fellow musicians, Salewicz penetrates the soul of an icon. I'll definitely be coming back to it. But I still learned so many things reading this book: his vegetarianism, Allen Ginsberg going on stage with the Clash, how brutal the break-up of his band was not to mention that his personal life was in shambles at the same time For details on how the band's members came and went and its career arced in the U. He worked at the NME in the late 's and early '80's and has written extensively for the Sunday Times and Q magazine. Average rating 4. Maybe that's right and maybe he did, although he was professional enough to not be sloppy on stage, and somehow his interviews, which you can find on YouTube, are great examples of the articulate honesty which continues to endear him to fans long after his death. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Joe buys some more drink and some drugs. Nov 24, Ryan rated it really liked it. The habit of someone who came up churning out interviews for music weeklies? Stummer's death made me melancholy because there went another band I'd never get to see live on stage Most impressive to me is that while highlighting Strummer, Salewicz conveyed the brilliance of each of the members of The Clash--Jones, Simonon, and Headon.

SECOND ANNUAL REPORT OF THE GEOLOGICAL AND AGRICULTURAL SURVEY OF TEXAS, —BY— S. B. BUCKLEY, A. M., Ph. D., STATE GEOLOGIST. HOUSTON: a. c. gray, state printer. 1876. Second Annual Report of the State Geologist To His Excellency, Richard Coke, Governor of Texas: This second annual report of the geological and agricul- tural survey of the State, is respectfully submitted to your consideration. With many thanks for the aid you have given the work, I remain, yours truly, S. B. BUCKLEY, State Geologist. Introduction In the following pages I have given what I deem to be the most useful things pertaining to the agricultural and mineral resources of the State, which I have obtained during the past year, reserving much geological matter of scientific interestfor a final report. Since the last report, I have bought chemical apparatus sufficient to analyze mineral soils and mineral waters, which will be of great assistance in the future work of the survey. This appa- ratus has only been recently obtained. Austin, March 27th, 1876. 4 The Importance of Geology and Geological Surveys. I supposed that the importance of geology and geo- logical surveys was so well known and acknowleded that it would not be proper here to say anything about their usefulness. Nor should I allude to these things, had I not a few weeks ago, heard one who was called a leading member of the late Constitutional Convention, state in a public speech to that body, that "Geology is a humbug and he knew it to be so." It is strange that all the leading universities, colleges and schools of the civilized world have been teaching a humbug for the last 45 years; and still more strange, that all civilized countries, including every one of the United States, excepting Florida, have had or are having geolog- ical surveys made of their domains; also, the United States Government, during the last 15 years or more, has had and still continues to have geological surveys made of its territories.

THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

  • Chapter 4: the Military Seeks Control
Chapter 4: The Military Seeks Control During the 1850s, the Southern Plains illustrated a pattern of contact and conflict that had become common throughout the western United States. Indian peoples who dominated areas before the establishment of American rule and the significant influx of Anglo-Americans found their preeminence in jeopardy. On the Central Plains, a combination of environmental change and inadvertent overuse of resources by Indian and Anglo alike endangered the riverine environments that sustained Cheyennes and overland travelers alike. Pressure created by use of the river valleys for grazing threatened buffalo herds as early as the 1840s, more than two decades before white buffalo hunters in the employ of railroads and the military began to wipe out these enormous shaggy creatures farther north. On the Northern Plains, along the Bozeman Trail, travelers who disrupted Indian life and broke treaty promises inspired violence between the tribes and soldiers; near Fort Laramie, in 1851, the shooting of a stray cow by an Indian led to the deaths of a number of soldiers and Indians and a permanent rift in relations. The large areas that Native Americans needed to maintain their ways of life assured that conflicts would continue. In the Southwest, the Mescaleros and Comanches faced the same encroachment, the same limiting of range and options, and their experience reflected those of other peoples of their time on the plains and in the West.1 The American military, as did its explorers and surveyors, became the enforcers of the doctrine of Manifest Destiny. During the 1850s, the Army first asserted its jurisdiction in the remote portion of the Mexican cession known as the Guadalupe Mountains and the trans-Pecos region.
