Jesse Dayton – Mixtape Volume 1 “If you open your arms to the world, it’s amazing what will come back atcha,” drawls East Texas native, singer/songwriter/filmmaker/author Jesse Dayton, who has a bunch more homespun wisdoms where that came from. A veteran of more than 30 years as a musician, Dayton was discovered as a young teenager playing “a toilet dive” in his hometown of Beaumont by legendary club owner Clifford Antone, who booked him into his famed Austin venue, then immediately shifted him over to the honky-tonk Broken Spoke, where the likes of Willie Nelson, George Strait and Ernest Tubb have had residencies. “When I first got to Austin, everybody else sounded like Stevie Ray Vaughan, but I sounded more like Jerry Reed. I didn’t think I was cool, either, because this was before every punk sported that image of Johnny Cash flipping the rod.” Equally steeped in Texas/Louisiana blues, old-school country and punk-rock, Dayton is the music world’s best-kept secret, hiding in plain sight as a guitarist for Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Ryan Bingham and L.A. punk pioneers X, as well as touring alongside Social Distortion, the Supersuckers and John Doe. After releasing 11 studio albums and an EP as a solo artist, Dayton’s new album, Mixtape Volume 1, is a series of 10 cover songs he thoroughly makes his own, reinterpreting and revisiting them in a brand-new way. Introduction In the following pages I have given what I deem to be the most useful things pertaining to the agricultural and mineral resources of the State, which I have obtained during the past year, reserving much geological matter of scientific interestfor a final report. Since the last report, I have bought chemical apparatus sufficient to analyze mineral soils and mineral waters, which will be of great assistance in the future work of the survey. This appa- ratus has only been recently obtained. Austin, March 27th, 1876. 4 The Importance of Geology and Geological Surveys. I supposed that the importance of geology and geo- logical surveys was so well known and acknowleded that it would not be proper here to say anything about their usefulness. Nor should I allude to these things, had I not a few weeks ago, heard one who was called a leading member of the late Constitutional Convention, state in a public speech to that body, that "Geology is a humbug and he knew it to be so." It is strange that all the leading universities, colleges and schools of the civilized world have been teaching a humbug for the last 45 years; and still more strange, that all civilized countries, including every one of the United States, excepting Florida, have had or are having geolog- ical surveys made of their domains; also, the United States Government, during the last 15 years or more, has had and still continues to have geological surveys made of its territories.

ADAM and the ANTS Adam and the Ants Were Formed in 1977 in London, England
ADAM AND THE ANTS Adam and the Ants were formed in 1977 in London, England. They existed in two incarnations. One of which lasted from 1977 until 1982 known as The Ants. This was considered their Punk era. The second incarnation known as Adam and the Ants also featured Adam Ant on vocals, but the rest of the band changed quite frequently. This would mark their shift to new wave/post-punk. They would release ten studio albums and twenty-five singles. Their hits include Stand and Deliver, Antmusic, Antrap, Prince Charming, and Kings of the Wild Frontier. A large part of their identity was the uniform Adam Ant wore on stage that consisted of blue and gold material as well as his sophisticated and dramatic stage presence. Click the band name above. ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN Formed in Liverpool, England in 1978 post-punk/new wave band Echo and the Bunnymen consisted of Ian McCulloch (vocals, guitar), Will Sergeant (guitar), Les Pattinson (bass), and Pete de Freitas (drums). They produced thirteen studio albums and thirty singles. Their debut album Crocodiles would make it to the top twenty list in the UK. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act.
