A The Tsar makes promises in the October Manifesto. The disturbances and unrest in St Petersburg, Moscow, and in many other parts of our Empire, have filled Our heart with great and profound sorrow. The present disturbances could give rise to national instability and present a threat to the unity of Our State. We have, therefore, ordered the government to take the following measures: fundamental civil freedoms will be granted to the population, including freedom of conscience, speech, assembly and association. Participation in the Duma will be granted to those classes of the population which are at present deprived of voting powers, and this will lead to the development of a universal franchise. -

Molly Martin 21H.467 The Kornilov Affair: a Failed Coup D'état The Kornilov Affair in 1917 was a coup d'état by the General of the Russian Army, Lavr Kornilov. This coup was a major turning point in the modification of Russia’s government. Kornilov attempted to gain control of the Russian Provisional Government, which was headed by Alexander Kerensky. The coup began in late August when Vladimir Lvov told Kornilov about Kerensky’s proposed strategies to fortify the government. The three plans were for a dictatorship under Kerensky, a military government with Kornilov as a dictator and Kornilov as a leader in an authoritarian government. The main controversy of this event was that it is uncertain whether Kerensky actually sent Lvov to Kornilov’s command center. Lvov returned to Petrograd and reported to Kerensky that Kornilov preferred the plan that featured him at the head of a military dictatorship. Kerensky took this information to mean that Kornilov was attacking him personally. Believing this, Kerensky tried to gain information about Kornilov’s actual plan. Due to the distance separating them and the limited technology that was available at the time, the teleprinter conversation was very unclear and left Kerensky confused as to what was actually happening, but he acquired the belief that Kornilov had the intention of seizing power. The next day Kornilov and his troops marched on Petrograd. He directly defied the Provisional Government. Kerensky realized that this coup was becoming a reality and asked for the help of the Petrograd Soviet to prevent a take over. The Soviet appealed to the workers and soldiers, asking them to protect the revolution. -

Yet, the military contribution of this capable strategist remains largely under- researched, overshadowed by his participation in the February Revolution and early stages of the Civil War in Russia. Table of Contents 1 Early Career 2 First World War Career 3 February Revolution and After 4 Role and Significance Notes Selected Bibliography Citation Early Career Mikhail Vassilievich Alekseyev (1857-1918) was born into the family of an infantry officer of humble origins.[1] He started his military career as a volunteer in 1873. He later went on to become a junior officer in 1876 in the 64th Kazansky infantry regiment, with which he took part in Russo-Turkish War in 1877-1878. In 1890 he graduated from the academy of general staff, first in his class. He received an appointment at the general staff and remained in St. Petersburg. Along with his staff service, he also taught Russian military history at the academy in 1890-1904. His former students noticed that he was not a great lecturer, but good at giving practical lessons in the field. Despite later developing as a strategist and theoretician, little is known about Alekseyev’s time in the academy as he did not publish much of his work. -

Antisemitism was the dominant modality of racialized othering in late-imperial Russia. Yet 1917 transformed Jewish life, setting in motion a sudden and intense period of emancipation. In Russian society more generally, the dramatic escalation of working class mobilisation resulted not only in the toppling of the tsar in February, but the coming to power of the Bolsheviks just eight months later. Running alongside these revolutionary transformations, however, was the re-emergence of anti-Jewish violence and the returning spectre of pogroms. Russia in 1917, then, presents an excellent case study to explore how a socialist movement responded to rising antisemitism in a moment of political crisis and escalating class conflict. The article does two things. First, it charts how the Bolsheviks understood antisemitism, and how they responded to it during Russia’s year of revolution. In doing so, it finds that Bolsheviks participated in a wide-ranging set of campaigns organised by the socialist left, the hub of which was the soviets of workers’ and soldiers’ deputies. Second, the essay argues that antisemitism traversed the political divide in revolutionary Russia, finding traction across all social groups and political projects. As the political crisis deepened in the course of 1917, the Bolsheviks increasingly had to contend with antisemitism within the movement. In traditional Marxist accounts, racism and radicalism are often framed in contestation. -
