Irish Voices from the First World War A blog based on PRONI sources Monitoring the pace, accuracy and effect of bombardment and the ebb and flow of infantry attack was indispensable to trench warfare, D1981/1 July to September 1917 British Army commanders were convinced that the Western German army would have been close to defeat by later 1917, had not the Russian front begun to crumble in September, as revolutionary insurgents, crucially assisted by the German state, took over the Russian administration in a vast upheaval. Following the misery of Passchendaele where teeming rain created perhaps one of the bleakest landscapes of battle in the war, the British Army revived in confidence by virtue of promising success in the mass use of tanks during the first days of Cambrai. The A.S.C. was responsible for supply of food, equipment and ammunition to forces on front line. Mulholland proud of equestrian assignment and skills [D4179/9/2/] 4th June – Went on Leave 14th June – Went to very good Corps Horse Show near Mardeuil in which we won 1st prize for best stripped H.D. horse. Went to still better Army Horse Show at Camblain l’Abbé, excellent jumping and turns out. A Portuguese officer won the jumping. -

TIMELINE OF EVENTS March 1917 Tsar Nicholas abdicates and the Provisional Government takes over supported by the Soviet. It now has to deal with all the problems which led to the downfall of the Tsar – the war, food shortages and peasant demands for land…. April 16th 1917 Lenin arrives in Russia. He makes a speech demanding an end to the war with Germany, land for the peasants and nationalisation of banks. He insists that no support be given to the Provisional Government – instead the Soviets (there are Soviets in other cities) should get together and form a new government. These ideas became known as the April Theses. June 1917 The Provisional Government orders the armies to attack Austria. This fails and turns into a retreat. Soldiers began to desert in large numbers. Many go to Petrograd and join the Bolsheviks demanding an end to the Provisional Government July 1917 100000 soldiers and Bolsheviks are out in the streets demanding ‘All power to the Soviets’. These three days of rioting in Petrograd are known as the July Days. Kerensky sends loyal troops into the city to deal with the uprising. He claims the Bolsheviks have been paid by Germany to make trouble and Lenin is a German agent. Lenin has to leave Russia to avoid arrest and goes to Finland. Other leading Bolsheviks are arrested. The Bolsheviks have become unpopular and weak. August 1917 Kerensky become leader of the Provisional Government. He has to deal with a challenge from General Kornilov, Commander in Chief of the army who wants to take control. -

A The Tsar makes promises in the October Manifesto. The disturbances and unrest in St Petersburg, Moscow, and in many other parts of our Empire, have filled Our heart with great and profound sorrow. The present disturbances could give rise to national instability and present a threat to the unity of Our State. We have, therefore, ordered the government to take the following measures: fundamental civil freedoms will be granted to the population, including freedom of conscience, speech, assembly and association. Participation in the Duma will be granted to those classes of the population which are at present deprived of voting powers, and this will lead to the development of a universal franchise. -

Molly Martin 21H.467 The Kornilov Affair: a Failed Coup D'état The Kornilov Affair in 1917 was a coup d'état by the General of the Russian Army, Lavr Kornilov. This coup was a major turning point in the modification of Russia’s government. Kornilov attempted to gain control of the Russian Provisional Government, which was headed by Alexander Kerensky. The coup began in late August when Vladimir Lvov told Kornilov about Kerensky’s proposed strategies to fortify the government. The three plans were for a dictatorship under Kerensky, a military government with Kornilov as a dictator and Kornilov as a leader in an authoritarian government. The main controversy of this event was that it is uncertain whether Kerensky actually sent Lvov to Kornilov’s command center. Lvov returned to Petrograd and reported to Kerensky that Kornilov preferred the plan that featured him at the head of a military dictatorship. Kerensky took this information to mean that Kornilov was attacking him personally. Believing this, Kerensky tried to gain information about Kornilov’s actual plan. Due to the distance separating them and the limited technology that was available at the time, the teleprinter conversation was very unclear and left Kerensky confused as to what was actually happening, but he acquired the belief that Kornilov had the intention of seizing power. The next day Kornilov and his troops marched on Petrograd. He directly defied the Provisional Government. Kerensky realized that this coup was becoming a reality and asked for the help of the Petrograd Soviet to prevent a take over. The Soviet appealed to the workers and soldiers, asking them to protect the revolution. -

Journal of Military and Strategic VOLUME 13, ISSUE 4, Summer 2011 Studies Strategy "in a microcosm": Processes of tactical learning in a WWI German Infantry Division1 Christian Stachelbeck Despite the defeat of 1918, the tactical warfare of German forces on the battlefields against a superior enemy coalition was often very effective. The heavy losses suffered by the allies until well into the last months of the war are evidence of this.2 The tactical level of military action comprises the field of direct battle with forces up to division size. Tactics – according to Clausewitz, the “theory of the use of military forces in combat” – is the art of commanding troops and their organized interaction in combined arms combat in the types of combat which characterized the world war era – attack, defense and delaying engagement.3 1 This paper is based on my book Militärische Effektivität im Ersten Weltkrieg. Despite relatively low levels of formal organization, soldiers’ wives made a significant mark on revolutionary politics at a local level. Common grievances, which centred on the inadequacy of state support in the context of rising food prices and shortages, were the defining feature of soldiers’ wives as a group. Though they secured little direct representation in government, and did not affiliate with any political parties, they operated collectively to address their grievances, both in petitions and in public demonstrations. Their demands continued to escalate in 1917, and the government was unable to cushion them from Russia’s profound economic crisis. Soldiers’ wives rejected both Soviet and provisional government leadership as a result, and their alienation contributed to the sense of political crisis that pervaded 1917. INTRODUCTION Soldiers’ wives played one of the most prominent and best-known roles in the February revolution. Their demonstrations in Petrograd alongside other women on International Women’s Day were the spark that lit the conflagration of revolution.1 The toppling of the Tsarist regime in February 1917 heralded an eight-month interregnum, during which the provisional government, a shifting coalition of liberals and moderate socialists, strove above all else to keep Russia in the war, and to avoid the * This paper was first presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies conference, Washington DC, in November 2001, and a subsequent version was presented to the Birmingham University SIPS seminar in March 2002.
