For this year on September 21st bhajan program we plan on presenting the family prayers by the families where the children can sing with their parents the school prayers (or prayers at home) that their parents sang when they were children. This would be a good way of parents transferring their cultural values to the children. Apart from the family prayers as proposed above, the children will also be given the opportunity to tell stories about their understanding of a God or Goddess. We would also dedicate half an hour for Orisha’s great singer Raghinath Panigrahi who passed away recently on August 25, 2013. If your children want to participate please inform by sending an email to [email protected] by September 14th. Chhapana Bhoga Offering and Mahamantra Chanting, December 2013 During the December month’s bhajan program 4-hour non-stop mahamantra chanting and chhapana- bhoga offering will be organized by JOGA volunteers. In 2012, Mrs Snigdha Hota (Mishra) had taken the lead and had done a great job in organizing the chhapana bhoga. Please stay tuned, invite your friends and volunteer to prepare an item. We thank the families for their generous contribution which enabled JOGA to give $720.00 as the gift of appreciation for the artists. Pictures of the program are available at: http://www.babru.com/RojiNarayan Chirantana Issue 31, September 9, 2013 4 https://picasaweb.google.com/114968136254737410613/Odissi_Narayan_PandeyRosalini_Mohanty?aut hkey=Gv1sRgCNXAnMvv5KSEMQ They presented three dance items, “Dashabatara”, “Nachanti Range Srihari” and “Devi”. After the dance program, music program continued for a long time. Mr. Narayan Pandey is also an excellent singer. A new talent from Richmond, Mrs Subhalaxmi also sang. The accompaniment was Chirantana Issue 31, September 9, 2013 5 provided by Debaki Nandan Chowdhury in harmonium, Pratap Das in Tabla and Surendra Ray in Dhola. The late night snack was provided by Urmila Sahu, Pinu Das, Snigdha Hota and Bigyani Das. Both Guru Pandey and Ms. Mohanty are M.A in Odissi Dance. They dance in front of Lord Jagannath every year at the time of Car Festival. They are Temple Dancers as they perform in all the occasions of Lord Jagannath like Jhulan Yatra, Chandan Yatra, Rath Yatra, Janmastami and other Festivals. Besides India, they have presented at foreign countries like Japan & Hongkong. Guru Narayan Pandey was trained directly under the keen guidance of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Smt. Kumkum Mohanty. He is a student of Odissi Research Centre. They present Mahari Dance, Odissi Dance and Folk Dance. Chirantana Issue 31, September 9, 2013 6 Rathayatra (Chariot Festival) on July 13, 2013 Like every year for the last six years, JOGA organized annual Rathaytra, i.e., chariot festival on July 13, 2013. This was the seventh year of celebration after the installation of the deities at Hindu temple in Adelphi, Maryland. Many devotees, both Odia families and regular Hindu temple devotees took part in this annual event with excitement and devotional energy. This year there were two chariots, one chariot for the children to make their journey as Krishna and Balaram. It so happened that the Lords wanted to sit in that chariot. Here is the miracle. The puja was performed by Pratap Dash early at 9 AM with rituals according to the instructions provided by Ramesh Rajguru of Puri. Meera Mohapatra was helping in Puja looking after all the technical details. Jayashree Samal helped in putting make-up on Dhruv Das and George Price to become Krishna and Balaram and sit in the children’s chariot. Dr Bikram Paul was getting ready to perform the duties of “chhera-pahanraa”. Everything was just perfect. The chariot procession began with cheering and kirtan. The children sat in their chariots and volunteers were pulling both the chariots. Chirantana Issue 31, September 9, 2013 7 Then the miracle happened. The chariot stopped in the midway. There was a crack in one of the wheels. After a quick discussion on many solution proposals, one proposal that worked out was the deities would be sitting in the laps of the children in the small chariot that was built for the children and the big chariot would be brought back to the temple premises in the tow truck. The devotees were all in accepting mood for Lord’s wishes and without any major breakthrough, the deities made their journey back to the temple. Finally Lord arrived back at the temple at about 12:30 PM. After thirst quenching watermelon and lemonade, the devotees were served Prasad. There was music program under the tent organized by Deepa Parija, Bala Dixit and Maushumi Patnaik.

  • The Trinity of Odissi
The Trinity of Odissi PRIYAMBADA MOHANTY·HEJMADI uite suddenly and unannounced, Odissi exploded on the world dance scene and , virtually overnight, emerged a conquerer. This Qhappened some 30 years ago-in the early '50s. Until then no one outside Orissa knew of its dance tradition. And in Orissa itself, though the tradition was alive, its pulse was feeble , erratic, terminal. If people accepted the legacy, it was apologetically (see 'My Initiation': Mohan Khokar, Angahar Festival Souvenir, 1985). I start this article with a reference to Khokar because he sums up in his essay the dramatic revival of Odissi in a relatively short span of time. He also affirms that the dance form was totally unknown outside Orissa. So, as a person who played a critical role in the revival (unconsciously, initially, but consciously at a later stage), it is best that I describe here, first, the state of the art as it was in the early part of this century. At any given time , a dance form acquires qualities suitable to its period and social ambience. In Orissa the dance which later came to be known as Odissi was practised by the Gotipuas on the one hand-an exclusively male tradition-and the Maharis on the other-exclusively female. The dance of the Maharis, being mainly ritualistic, was more of a closed system than the GurusPankaj Charan Das (1971), KelucharanMohaparra (1982), Dcbaprasad Das (1978). ., • .t • PRl YAMBADA MOIIANTY-HEJMADl Gotipuas'. In Chaitanya Charitamruta it is mentioned that Raya Ramanan da Patnaik, Minister of King Prata parudra-who was a great devotee of Shri Chaitanya-taught abhinaya to the Maharis, According to this work Ramananda taught satvika and sanehari bhavas to the beautiful devadasis (later to be known as Maharis) and had the Geets Govinda enacted by them in dance.
