SIGNATURE: ABSTRACT Bemba traditional society views marriage as the union of a man and woman forever. In addition, marriage also signifies the bringing together and amalgamation of the bride and groom's immediate and extended families, thereby extending the sense of communalism in Bemba society. Because of the Bemba people's strong sense of oral tradition, marriages are contracted by word of mouth and not by a certificate. This strong sense of oral agreement has endured and is revered and respected, despite the rapid increase in literacy and the impact of inter- racial relations and modernization. From the time a man finds a woman to marry to the time they actually marry, there are different ceremonies that have to be performed. These ceremonies include: Ukusonga (proposal), Ukukobekela (engagement), Ubwinga (wedding), Amatebeto (honoring) and Ukwingisha (lit. putting something into a container or enclosure, but denotes the highest level of honor). Ukusonga marks the beginning of the marriage process. It involves the delivery of a marriage proposal by a man to a woman through an intermediary (go-between or spokesman) known as Shibukombe. Ukukobekela follows immediately after that, and involves the presentation of a betrothal or engagement present called insalamo, to the family of the woman. Once all marriage negotiations are concluded the two families begin to make necessary preparations for the wedding ceremony Ubwinga, which is celebrated at the home of the bride. With time, a married man who proves to be a good husband, a good father and indeed a good member of the community, will be honored by his in­ laws who will initiate the Ukwingisha ceremony on his behalf. Since the notion of having honor and being honored is highly valued in Bemba society, this ceremony is particularly important to a married man as it establishes a strong sense of pride and belonging both for him and his family. As such, this ceremony can be regarded as a public display of worthiness, which suggests that certain codes of conduct have successfully been negotiated, on the part of both the man and the woman. Using this as a basis, the writer aimed at investigating the specific role of music, particularly within the traditional marriage rites of the Bemba- speaking people. Special attention will be given to the type and meaning of music used, the way it is used, and the reasons why it is used in this particular way. The writer hoped to show 1 that the utilization of music in this context is to perpetuate cultural and religious values, so as to ensure the continuation and survival of such cultural traditions. It was also hoped to show by way of study, that music plays an integral role within oral traditions, enabling the passing on of cultural values and morals from one generation to the next. Of concern here, is the way in which music is used to announce, initiate and to demarcate the different components of the marriage ceremonies over a period of time. As such music acts to signify, validate and incorporate the marriage ceremonies as an important part of the Bemba philosophy. 11 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS In the course of preparing and the writing of this research, I had the benefit of ideas that I learnt from my supervisor, Dr Deirdre D. INTRODUCTION Location The Lungu people (also known as Rungu or Taabwa) are an ethnic and linguistic group living primarily on the southeastern shores of of Lake Tanganyika, on the Marungu massif in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and in southwestern Tanzania and Northeastern Zambia. They speak dialects of the mambwe-Lungu language, a Bantu language closely related to that of the nearby Bemba people and Luba people. The taabwa people are Bantu with a language similar to the Bemba. The ame is spelled Tabwa in some sources.

The first system is the indigenous cosmology of the Acholi community of Pajok, South Sudan; the other is the world religion of evangelical Protestantism. Christianity has been in the region around 100 years, and although the current religious field represents a significant shift from earlier compositions, the continuing effects of colonial and early missionary encounters have had significant impact. This thesis seeks to understand the cosmological transformations involved in all these encounters. This thesis provides the first in-depth account of South Sudanese Acholi – a group almost entirely absent from the ethnographic record. However, its largest contributions come through wider theoretical and ethnographic insights gained in attending to local Acholi cosmological, ontological, and experiential orientations. These contributions are: firstly, the connection of Melanesian ideas of agency and personhood to Africa, demonstrating not only the relational nature of Acholi personhood but an understanding of agency acknowledging nonhuman actors; secondly, a demonstration of the primarily relational nature of local personhood whereby Acholi and evangelical persons and relations are similarly structured; and thirdly, an argument that, in South Sudan, both systems are ultimately about how people organise the moral fabric of their society.

This is further motivated by the recognition that the road network constitutes the single largest asset owned by the Government, and a less than optimal system of the management and maintenance of that asset generally results in huge losses for the national economy. In order to ensure management and maintenance of the PFR, the government is introducing the OPRC concept. The OPRC is a concept is a contracting approach in which the service provider is paid not for ‘inputs’ but rather for the results of the work executed under the contract i.e. the service provider’s performance under the contract. The initial phase of the project, supported by the World Bank will be implementing the Improved Rural Connectivity Project (IRCP) in some selected districts of Central, Eastern, Northern, Luapula, Southern and Muchinga Provinces. The project will be implemented in Eastern Province for a period of five (5) years from 2020 to 2025 using the Output and Performance Road Contract (OPRC) approach. GRZ thus intends to roll out the OPRC on the PFR Network covering a total of 14,333Kms country-wide.

MURAO • Land Use of Angolan Immigrants in Western Zambia 59 Land Use of Angolan Immigrants in Western Zambia: Rethinking the Autonomy and Coexistence of Self-settled Refugee Communities in Host Countries Rumiko Murao ABSTRACT When studying self-settled refugees in Africa, driven by war from rural villages into a host country and losing property in the process, there has been an assumption that after achieving self-sufficiency, the livelihood of these groups is stable. Though there are attempts to refer their livelihoods to identify solutions of refugee problems, this assumption has not been examined comprehensively in the light of political change at the macro level. The present study examines actual land use and livelihoods among self-settled refugee Angolan immigrants in western Zambia in order to comprehensively clarify the dynamics involved in their reestablishment of an autonomous livelihood. The economy of this group depends on shifting cultivation in the woodlands of the Kalahari uplands and subsequent sale of crops. Because land use is limited by the traditional political system of Lozi people, who is the host in western Zambia, integrated into the Zambian government’s Land Act, these immigrants have opened shifting cultivation fields from the western edge of the woodlands to the east. Land transactions have therefore followed prior occupation, with a tacit understanding that primary forests have been left as patches among the fields. The immigrants’ strong desire to open the dispersed primary forests has been a source of intra-group competition. The autonomous land use of these self-settled refugees that shows new methods of land acquisition which reinforce practical units of common social organization, has demonstrated the dynamics of reestablished livelihood in a flexible and practical manner, allowing them to coexist in a politically marginalized situation in the host country.
