City College, Rajshahi and dDept. of Zoology, Rajshahi University, Rajshahi, Bangladesh Abstract The moth, Eublemma amabilis Moore is very destructive to lac insect and lac encrustation. The moth is generally white-pinkish in colour and it lays gray-white and round eggs, depressed in the centre. The newly hatched larva enters the lac insect either through one of the opening in the cell or by tunneling a hole through the encrustation. A single larva damages 42-50 matured cells prior to pupation. It com- pletes six generation in a year and causes comparatively more injury to the “Kartki” crop than to the Baishaki crop. The morphological details of this predator were studied. Several natural enemies of E. amabilis have been recorded. Key words: Eublemma amabilis, Lac, Predator, Crop injury and Control measure. Introduction Eublemma amabilis was first described and Mahdihassan (1925) gave a short account of illustrated by Moore from Sri Lanka in 1884 its presence in south India. Negi et al (1945) but Witt (1901) was the first to study the worked on the biological control of this general life history and referred to its injuri- predator by using its indigenous parasite, ous nature with regard to the lac insect.

  • Predatory and Parasitic Lepidoptera: Carnivores Living on Plants
Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society 49(4), 1995, 412-453 PREDATORY AND PARASITIC LEPIDOPTERA: CARNIVORES LIVING ON PLANTS NAOMI E. PIERCE Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 02138, USA ABSTRACT. Moths and butterflies whose larvae do not feed on plants represent a decided minority slice of lepidopteran diversity, yet offer insights into the ecology and evolution of feeding habits. This paper summarizes the life histories of the known pred atory and parasitic lepidopteran taxa, focusing in detail on current research in the butterfly family Lycaenidae, a group disproportionately rich in aphytophagous feeders and myr mecophilous habits. More than 99 percent of the 160,000 species of Lepidoptera eat plants (Strong et al. 1984, Common 1990). Plant feeding is generally associated with high rates of evolutionary diversification-while only 9 of the 30 extant orders of insects (Kristensen 1991) feed on plants, these orders contain more than half of the total number of insect species (Ehrlich & Raven 1964, Southwood 1973, Mitter et al. 1988, cf. Labandiera & Sepkoski 1993). Phytophagous species are characterized by specialized diets, with fewer than 10 percent having host ranges of more than three plant families (Bernays 1988, 1989), and butterflies being particularly host plant-specific (e.g., Remington & Pease 1955, Remington 1963, Ehrlich & Raven 1964). This kind of life history specialization and its effects on population structure may have contributed to the diversification of phytophages by promoting population subdivision and isolation (Futuyma & Moreno 1988, Thompson 1994). Many studies have identified selective forces giving rise to differences in niche breadth (Berenbaum 1981, Scriber 1983, Rausher 1983, Denno & McClure 1983, Strong et al.

LETOURNEAU1,*, Gaden S. ROBINSON2 and Joy A. HAGEN1 1 Department of Environmental Studies, University of California, Santa Cruz, USA 2 Department of Entomology, The Natural History Museum, London, UK One prominent concern about genetically modified crops is the possibility of environmental impacts from the movement of fitness-enhancing traits to wild plant populations. Decisions to deregulate Bt crops in the USA have relied strongly on arguments that these crops will not interbreed with wild relatives in the permitted growing regions. Limited attention therefore has been directed to analyses of the consequences of gene flow. To provide a transparent evaluation process for risks associated with insecticidal transgene escape, we crafted a series of questions designed to guide this aspect of the risk assessment. We then explored the current knowledge base available for answering such risk-related questions for three Bt crops (cotton, rapeseed, and rice). First, we generated a list of wild relatives of these crops. A definitive list of potential transgene recipients is not yet possible for some crops. Sufficient data are not available for some crops to eliminate certain related plant species from consideration of fertile hybrid formation, thus making lists for these crops subject to speculation. Second, we queried the HOSTS database (UK) to obtain a worldwide listing of lepidopteran species that feed on these crops and their wild relatives, and to determine the host range of the larvae.
