Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

It North Orissa University, Takatpur, thrives on host plants like Palas, Kusum and Ber. An attempt has been made to study culture of lac in Baripada -757003, Mayurbhanj, non-conventional method of cultivation in peripheral and buffer zones of Similipal Biosphere Odisha, India. Reserve (SBR) where farmers are practicing in a conventional way. The initial density of settlement of larva ranged between 92.58-126.74 no. /cm2 and 93.12-109.62 no. /cm2 in Kusmi strain on Kusum Dolagobinda Dey and Ber trees, respectively. For Rangeeni strain it was 82.67-118.32 no. /cm2. The sex ratio (male: Department of Zoology, female) was found to be 1:3 for all the crops, strains and host plants. The range of resin output per Udala College, Udala, Mayurbhanj- cell was 17.00-21.40 mg for winter crop and 19.00-25.60 mg for summer crop of Kusmi strain on 757041, Odisha, India. Kusum and Ber plants. For Rangeeni strain on Palas plant it was 05.30-11.20 mg for rainy crop and Nakulananda Mohanty 18.72 -23.00 mg for summer crop. -

A staff or more than 50 scientists conducts research to provide information for wise public and private decisions on managing and using Oregons forest resources and operating its wood-using industries. Because of this research, Oregons forests now yield more in the way of wood products, water, forage, wildlife, and recreation. Wood products are harvested, processed, and used more efficiently. Employment, productivity, and profitability in industries dependent on forests also have been strengthened. And this research has helped Oregon to maintain a quality environment for its people. Much research is done in the Laboratorys facilities on the campus. But field experiments in forest genetics, young- growth management, forest hydrology, harvesting methods, and reforestation are conducted on 12,000 acres of School forests adjacent to the campus and on lands of public and private cooperating agencies throughout the Pacific Northwest. With these publications, the Forest Research Laboratory supplies the results of its research to forest land owners and managers, to manufacturers and users of forest products, to leaders of government and industry, and to the general public. In this study, we measured lac secretion rates by the insect Kerria chinensis at different developmental stages and identified lac secretion-minimum and lac secretion-active stages of the insect. We then analyzed transcriptomes of lac secretion-minimum and lac secretion-active stages of the insect. Based on expression profiles of genes in different stages of the insect, we identified pathways and genes that are potentially involved in lac synthesis and secretion in K. -

During the investigation 11 species of fauna Natural Resins and Gums, associated with Kerria lacca Kerr. from 8 families under 3 were recorded representing predator species Ranchi Jharkhand, India E. amabilis, P. pulverea, C. zastrowi; primary parasitoids T. tachardiae, A. purpureus, T. clavicornis, E. dewitzi and hyperparasitoids A. fakhrulhajiae, E. tachardiae, B. greeni, B. tachardiae. Of these, 8 belong to Hymenoptera, 2 from Lepidoptera, and 1 from Neuroptera. Analysis of the data revealed that 27.27 per cent of the genera as well as species belonged to family Encyrtidae; 18.18 per cent to Braconidae and 9.09 per cent each to Eupelmidae, Chalcididae, Noctuidae, Blastobasidae, Chrysopidae, and Eulophidae. E. dewitzi recorded the most abundant parasitoid among all the associated fauna with average relative densities of 27.82, 39.91, 39.53, 32.89 per cent during different seasons (Oct 2015, July and Oct 2016 and July 2017, respectively) whereas in eastern India where lac cultivation is practiced T. -

Its primary host plants such as kusum (Schleichera oleosa), palas (Butea monosperma) and ber (Zizyphus mauritiana) are available in peripheral and buffer zones of Similipal Biosphere Reserve (SBR). An attempt has been made to study its life cycle and life span in different zones of SBR. Two strains, i.e., kusmi and rangeeni of lac insect are bivoltine in nature at SBR. The longest life span of 8 months 5 days was observed in baisakhi (summer) crop and shortest life span of 3 months 16 days is seen in katki (rainy) crop of rangeeni strain on palas tree in peripheral zone. The buffer zone also showed the same trend. The life span of young ranges from 44-111 days for all the crops, strains and host plants. The life span of adult male is 2-3 days and the life span of female insect varies between 62-148 days for different crops. The variation of life span of male, female as well as young occurs due to temperature, host plants and strains of lac insect.
