A combination of Kusmi lac, Kerria lacca, Emamectin benzoatate 5 % SG +Carbendazim 50 WP (T ), Indoxacarb 14.5 % SC + 1 Natural enemies of lac crop, New insecticide Carbendazim 50 WP (T2) and Control (T3) was evaluated against the predators of the lac molecule insect. Pesticides application significantly reduced the incidence of major predators Eublemma amabilis Moore and Pseudohypatopa pulverea Mayr in comparison to (T ). The main ingredients of lac are lactones and lactides, which are formed from hydroxy fatty acids and sesquiterpene esters. In this study, we measured lac secretion rates by the insect Kerria chinensis at different developmental stages and identified lac secretion-minimum and lac secretion-active stages of the insect. We then analyzed transcriptomes of lac secretion-minimum and lac secretion-active stages of the insect. Based on expression profiles of genes in different stages of the insect, we identified pathways and genes that are potentially involved in lac synthesis and secretion in K. -

But insect when it is reared on cultivated annual shrubby hosts like Cajanus cajan, soil health matters. Its primary host plants such as kusum (Schleichera oleosa), palas (Butea monosperma) and ber (Zizyphus mauritiana) are available in peripheral and buffer zones of Similipal Biosphere Reserve (SBR). An attempt has been made to study its life cycle and life span in different zones of SBR. Two strains, i.e., kusmi and rangeeni of lac insect are bivoltine in nature at SBR. The longest life span of 8 months 5 days was observed in baisakhi (summer) crop and shortest life span of 3 months 16 days is seen in katki (rainy) crop of rangeeni strain on palas tree in peripheral zone. The buffer zone also showed the same trend. The life span of young ranges from 44-111 days for all the crops, strains and host plants. The life span of adult male is 2-3 days and the life span of female insect varies between 62-148 days for different crops. The variation of life span of male, female as well as young occurs due to temperature, host plants and strains of lac insect. VOL. 15 APHIDS AND OTHER HEMIPTEROUS INSECTS 151±167 Scale insects /Hemiptera, Coccoidea/ as a source of natural dye and other useful substances BOZÇ ENA èAGOWSKA,KATARZYNA GOLAN Department of Entomology, University of Life Sciences KroÂla LeszczynÂskiego 7, 20-069 Lublin, Poland [email protected] [email protected] Abstract For centuries some scale insect species have been used for the production of dye (Porphyrophora polonica, P. hameli, Kermes vermilio, Kerria lacca), wax (Ceroplastes ceriferus, C. irregularis, Ericerus pela), lac and shellac (K. lacca); these hemipterons are also the source of honeydew. Nowadays, some of them (Dactylopius coccus) deliver natural pigment which is used for yoghurt, sweets and soft drinks production. Polish cochineal is considered to be a historical and well-earned species for Poland. During Jagiellonian times it constituted one of the more important factors in national economy contributing to the country's prosperity and the society's well-being. Also today it could be used in many sectors of the eco- nomy, e.g. in food production. One of the factors which makes it more difficult to use species of the Porphyrophora genus in mass production of carmine dye is a too little content of dyeing substance in the bodies of these insects and a too large content of fat (about 30% of body mass) which inhibits the process of fabrics dyeing. An additional, though not less important problem is a remar- kable disappearance of P. polonica and P. hameli which is related with the damage of their natural habitats. The phenomenon of scale insect disappea- rance and the need for its protection was noticed back in the eighteenth cen- tury. -

City College, Rajshahi and dDept. of Zoology, Rajshahi University, Rajshahi, Bangladesh Abstract The moth, Eublemma amabilis Moore is very destructive to lac insect and lac encrustation. The moth is generally white-pinkish in colour and it lays gray-white and round eggs, depressed in the centre. The newly hatched larva enters the lac insect either through one of the opening in the cell or by tunneling a hole through the encrustation. A single larva damages 42-50 matured cells prior to pupation. It com- pletes six generation in a year and causes comparatively more injury to the “Kartki” crop than to the Baishaki crop. The morphological details of this predator were studied. Several natural enemies of E. amabilis have been recorded. Key words: Eublemma amabilis, Lac, Predator, Crop injury and Control measure.
