Ti (Stephen Chow) is a poor father who works all day, everyday at a construction site to make sure his son Dicky Chow (Xu Jian) can attend an elite private school. Despite his father’s good intentions to give his son the opportunities he never had, Dicky, with his dirty and tattered clothes and none of the “cool” toys stands out from his schoolmates like a sore thumb. Ti can’t afford to buy Dicky any expensive toys and goes to the best place he knows to get new stuff for Dicky – the junk yard! While out “shopping” for a new toy for his son, Ti finds a mysterious orb and brings it home for Dicky to play with. To his surprise and disbelief, the orb reveals itself to Dicky as a bizarre “pet” with extraordinary powers. Armed with his “CJ7” Dicky seizes this chance to overcome his poor background and shabby clothes and impress his fellow schoolmates for the first time in his life. -

Due to its recent emergence and disparity from the Western art market, it remains an indispensable yet unfamiliar subject for the art world. This study penetrates through the thriving scene of the Chinese art market, fills part of the gap by presenting an in-depth analysis of its market structure, and depicts the route of development during 2006-2011, the booming period of the Chinese art market. As one of the most important and largest emerging art markets, what are the key trends in the Chinese art market from 2006 to 2011? This question serves as the main research question that guides throughout the research. To answer this question, research at three levels is unfolded, with regards to the functioning of the Chinese art market, the geographical shift from west to east, and the market performance of contemporary Chinese art. As the most vibrant art category, Contemporary Chinese art is chosen as the focal art sector in the empirical part since its transaction cover both the Western and Eastern art market and it really took off at secondary art market since 2005, in line with the booming period of the Chinese art market. -

I declare that my thesis consists of 71012 words. 2 Abstract This thesis aims to investigate the industry restructuration of the Chinese film industry in the context of China integrating into the global neoliberal capitalist system since its WTO entry in 2002. By interrogating the power dynamics between the Party-state, domestic capital and transnational media capital, this thesis explores respective roles each of the three stakeholders have played in shaping the commercialization and marketization of the Chinese film industry. Methodically, this thesis primarily relies on elite interviews with industry professionals, together with critical discourse analysis of one key policy document, and secondary data collected from news outlets, trade publications, industry reports, etc. -

MEDIA RELEASE AUSTRALIAN EMBASSY, BEIJING MR012/09 2 December 2009 My Australian Life 2009 ANZ Australian Film Festival On the eve of the Opening of the 2009 ANZ Australian Film Festival in Beijing, two films featured in the Festival have received the highest accolade for filmmaking in the Asia Pacific Region. Acclaimed Australian film Samson and Delilah won Best Feature Film Award and the innovative new claymation Mary and Max won Best Animated Feature Film Award at the recent Asia Pacific Screen Awards. The Awards were presented at a glittering ceremony on the Gold Coast, attended by more than 800 film industry luminaries from the Asia-Pacific and around the world. Thirty-seven films representing 16 countries and territories were finalists in the Awards, with the winners being determined by an International Jury headed by notable Chinese director and producer Huang Jianxin. Other notable winners included China’s Nanjing! Nanjing! (City of Life and Death) which received two awards: Lu Chuan for Achievement in Directing and Cao Yu for Achievement in Cinematography. “That both Australian and Chinese films have featured so prominently in the APSA Awards this year is a real credit to the vibrant filmmaking industries and creative energies coming out of both countries”, said Australian Ambassador to China Dr Geoff Raby. “The recent coming into force of our bilateral Film Co-Production Agreement is also going to create some fantastic opportunities for collaboration between our two industries.” Samson and Delilah and Mary and Max will be screened for the first time ever in China as part of the 2009 ANZ Australian Film Festival opening this Friday, 4 December at the Megabox Cinema (The Village at Sanlitun) in Beijing. -

However, very little attention is devoted to examining how historical consciousness affects present China. People take for granted that the past—particularly the landmark traumas of the communist decades— is a far-reaching historical discontinuity, and that China’s profound changes in every aspect of society have rendered the past increasingly irrelevant. However, this thesis argues that this assumption is wrong. This thesis explores the ways that Chinese filmmakers rearticulate the historical traumas which continue to affect Chinese society in the post-WTO era. -

Because there are many ways of becoming a doctor. Abstract Despite China being the country with most disabled people in the world, the provision of media accessibility services and their academic study are still in their infancy, including audio description. Audio description is a “description of visual information delivered via an audio channel” (Salway, 2007, p. 151) catering people with sigh loss, but not exclusively. Audio description is currently mainly offered in the so-called “first-tier cities” in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. This is not surprising considering that the provision of audio description relies on the priorities of each regional government, along with grassroot initiatives. The academic side of audio description does not come off better, although the state of Audio-visual Translation is quite vibrant in China.
