Signed: Date: 19 May 2012 I To my newly born baby II ABSTRACT The twentieth century saw the spread of Western art music across the world as Western ideology and values acquired increasing dominance in the global order. How did this process occur in China, what complexities does it display and what are its distinctive features? This thesis aims to provide a detailed and coherent understanding of the Westernisation of Chinese music in the 20th century, focusing on the ever-changing relationship between music and social ideology and the rise and evolution of national identity as expressed in music. This thesis views these issues through three crucial stages: the early period of the 20th century which witnessed the transition of Chinese society from an empire to a republic and included China’s early modernisation; the era from the 1930s to 1940s comprising the Japanese intrusion and the rising of the Communist power; and the decades of economic and social reform from 1978 onwards. The thesis intertwines the concrete analysis of particular pieces of music with social context and demonstrates previously overlooked relationships between these stages. It also seeks to illustrate in the context of the appropriation of Western art music how certain concepts acquired new meanings in their translation from the European to the Chinese context, for example modernity, Marxism, colonialism, nationalism, tradition, liberalism, and so on. -

“Music for a National Defense”: Making Martial Music during the Anti-Japanese War Joshua H. Howard, University of Mississippi Abstract This article examines the popularization of “mass songs” among Chinese Communist troops during the Anti-Japanese War by highlighting the urban origins of the National Salvation Song Movement and the key role it played in bringing songs to the war front. The diffusion of a new genre of march songs pioneered by Nie Er was facilitated by compositional devices that reinforced the ideological message of the lyrics, and by the National Salvation Song Movement. By the mid-1930s, this grassroots movement, led by Liu Liangmo, converged with the tail end of the proletarian arts movement that sought to popularize mass art and create a “music for national defense.” Once the war broke out, both Nationalists and Communists provided organizational support for the song movement by sponsoring war zone service corps and mobile theatrical troupes that served as conduits for musicians to propagate their art in the hinterland. By the late 1930s, as the United Front unraveled, a majority of musicians involved in the National Salvation Song Movement moved to the Communist base areas. Their work for the New Fourth Route and Eighth Route Armies, along with Communist propaganda organizations, enabled their songs to spread throughout the ranks. Western China, Popular Culture, and the Ambiguous Centrality of the Periphery Kevin Latham SOAS, University of London his essay explores various diverse and divergent representations of Western China1 in Chinese media and popular culture with the aim of considering how they, and their reappropriations, reproductions, and reinventions still populate TChina’s contemporary cultural landscape. In this way the essay will identify ways in which the peripherality of Western China has played, and continues to play, a key role in the constitution of mainstream Chinese popular culture. In particular, the essay will focus on examples from three different periods of Chinese cultural history: the Ming dynasty novelJourney to the West, revolutionary popular culture of the 1950s and 1960s, and cinema and television in the early post- Mao period. 1 Defining “Western China” is already problematic. China’s Western Development Plan (see below) designates Western China as the six provinces of Gansu, Guizhou, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan, as well as the five autonomous regions of Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, and Ningxia. Other Chinese government definitions of Western China leave out Inner Mongolia and Guangxi from this list and include the municipality of Chongqing. However, geographically, both of these definitions include some regions—such as Shaanxi and Guizhou—that are actually fairly “central” in location. Some Chinese participants in the Perth symposium pointed out that they and, by implication, some other Chinese would consider, in their popular imaginary, Sichuan, Shaanxi, and some areas of the Yellow River valley to be part of “Central” China. However, in this essay the term “Western China” does not refer to a rigidly defined geopolitical territory, nor do I seek to identify the geographical boundaries of popular conceptualizations of what is or is not Western or Central China. -

Although music therapists work with Chinese people in the United States, Canada, Australia, and China, little is known about how these music therapists incorporate Chinese culture in their practice in order to provide culturally-responsive music therapy. This ethnographic research study aimed to understand how Western-trained music therapists incorporated Chinese culture in their practice in China. The researcher observed music therapy sessions of two Western-trained music therapists in a neurologic rehabilitation and mental rehabilitation department in a hospital setting in China. -

Tedy nové přístupy, založení první čínské konzervatoře, vytvoření velkých symfonických orchestrů a populární žánry té doby. Druhá část práce je věnována skladateli Xian Xinghaiovi, jeho životu, teoretickým přístupům a dílu. Především obsahuje analýzu jeho Kantáty Žlutá řeka, jejímž cílem je určit vlivy, které se na konečné podobě kantáty podílely a ukázat, jak konkrétně se skladateli podařilo skloubit západní kompoziční techniky s technikami čínskými. Thus the new approaches, establishment of the first Chinese Conservatory, making of the great symphony orchestras and popular genres of this era. The second part of this thesis concerns with composer Xian Xinghai, his life, theoretical approaches and works. It mainly includes the analysis of his Yellow River Cantata the aim of which is to determinate the influences which participate in the final form of this cantata and to show how exactly the composer succeed in combining Western and Chinese techniques of composing. -

Downloaded by [University of Defence] at 20:24 09 May 2016 The Third Chinese Revolutionary Civil War, 1945–49 This book examines the Third Chinese Revolutionary Civil War of 1945–49, which resulted in the victory of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) over Chiang Kaishek and the Guomindang (GMD) and the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. It provides a military and strategic history of how the CCP waged and ultimately won the war, the transformation of its armed forces, and how the Communist leaders interacted with each other. Whereas most explanations of the CCP’s eventual victory focus on the Sino- Japanese War of 1937–45, when the revolution was supposedly won as a result of the Communists’ invention of “peasant nationalism,” this book shows that the outcome of the revolution was not a foregone conclusion in 1945. It explains how the eventual victory of the Communists resulted from important strategic decisions taken on both sides, in particular the remarkable transformation of the Communist army from an insurgent / guerrilla force into a conventional army. The book also explores how the hierarchy of the People’s Republic of China developed during the war. It shows how Mao’s power was based as much on his military acumen as his political thought, above all his role in formulating and implementing a successful military strategy in the war of 1945–49. It also describes how other important figures, such as Lin Biao, Deng Xiaoping, Nie Rongzhen, Liu Shaoqi, and Chen Yi, made their reputations during the conflict, and reveals the inner workings of the First generation political-military elite of the PRC. -
