Although music therapists work with Chinese people in the United States, Canada, Australia, and China, little is known about how these music therapists incorporate Chinese culture in their practice in order to provide culturally-responsive music therapy. This ethnographic research study aimed to understand how Western-trained music therapists incorporated Chinese culture in their practice in China. The researcher observed music therapy sessions of two Western-trained music therapists in a neurologic rehabilitation and mental rehabilitation department in a hospital setting in China. In addition, the two music therapists, two of their clients, and two facility professionals were interviewed. The researcher also collected data through field recordings, field notes, and artifacts. Six categories were identified in the data analysis. The findings indicated that Western- trained music therapists incorporated Chinese culture in their session by: using “mixture” music, iv developing and maintaining guānxi with various individuals, using multiple models of music therapy, using a variety of active and receptive experiences, using the Chinese Mandarin language, and acknowledging that music therapy is a natural therapy. Overall, themes of mixture were in several of the categories suggesting that music therapy with Chinese people is a “mixture” music therapy. This “mixture” music therapy contains a mixture of cultures including Western culture, Chinese culture, and other cultures. This also suggests that the younger generation in China may be more accepting of different cultural values through globalization. Future research by Chinese music therapists is needed to understand varying perspectives of culturally-responsive music therapy for Chinese people. For instance, I had two friends at a young age who were Taiwanese and Chinese, but I saw them as the same culture, Chinese culture. I learned more about my Taiwanese friend and her culture when I visited her home. There, I observed her family’s interactions, communications in their native language, preparation of food, and tasting authentic cuisine. It was exciting to learn about her culture in this small immersion experience, and fun to try Taiwanese food for the first time. Prior to my training in multicultural counseling, my interests in music therapy and Asian cultures emerged at my internship. At one facility, an Asian woman with a developmental disability attended music therapy sessions. This was the first time that I had worked with an Asian woman and, I began to ask myself questions about how music therapists provide music therapy services to Asian clients in a culturally empathetic way. Although her ethnicity was uncertain, I believe I chose to research music therapy and Chinese culture based on my previous notions, experience, and friendships. I wanted to know if music therapists in the United States provided services to Chinese people, as well as if music therapy was a profession being practiced in China. After I learned that music therapists were working with Chinese people in the United States and in China, new questions began to form, and I wanted to understand how music therapists include Chinese culture in their practice. I thought the best way to answer this question was to travel and study it in China. 2 Because I have a strong desire to travel, live, work, and conduct research in China after the completion of my graduate program, I hope that this research will inform me how I can incorporate the Chinese culture into Western music therapy practice. In this first chapter, I discuss in more detail my interest for conducting this research, Western culture in music therapy, music therapy with Chinese people, music therapy in China, definitions important to this study, ethnography as the methodology, the purpose of this study, and its research question.

How did this process occur in China, what complexities does it display and what are its distinctive features? This thesis aims to provide a detailed and coherent understanding of the Westernisation of Chinese music in the 20th century, focusing on the ever-changing relationship between music and social ideology and the rise and evolution of national identity as expressed in music. This thesis views these issues through three crucial stages: the early period of the 20th century which witnessed the transition of Chinese society from an empire to a republic and included China’s early modernisation; the era from the 1930s to 1940s comprising the Japanese intrusion and the rising of the Communist power; and the decades of economic and social reform from 1978 onwards. The thesis intertwines the concrete analysis of particular pieces of music with social context and demonstrates previously overlooked relationships between these stages. It also seeks to illustrate in the context of the appropriation of Western art music how certain concepts acquired new meanings in their translation from the European to the Chinese context, for example modernity, Marxism, colonialism, nationalism, tradition, liberalism, and so on.

    SPIRITUAL MOMENTS IN MUSIC THERAPY: A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF THE MUSIC THERAPIST’S EXPERIENCE Maya K. Marom ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate spiritual moments in different music therapy settings and to examine specifically the personal experience of the music therapists involved in them. Ten leading figures in the U. S. music therapy arena were asked to recall a session or two in their careers in which they felt that the therapeutic process became spiritual in nature. They were asked to explain why they viewed these sessions as spiritual. Finally, they were encouraged to describe their own thoughts, feelings, and actions during those sessions. Their testimonies were analyzed according to phenomenological principles, and the major issues that were brought forth were defined, compared, and shaped into an extensive description of the topic. The therapists’ reflections on the term spirituality portrayed it as a dynamic experience that at once reaches inward to touch the greatest depth of the human soul and outward to form the greatest transpersonal connections. Likewise, the range of sessions that were defined as spiritual was quite wide. The examples given by the therapists included moments of major changes in the clients’ behaviors, emotions or thoughts, moments of powerful bonding between therapists and their clients; moments of sudden realizations on behalf of the therapists regarding the therapeutic process, their clients or themselves; moments of strengthened religious beliefs (of clients or therapists) and contacts with transcendent entities. Various aspects of the therapists’ experience before, during, and after the spiritual moments were examined. Their prior preparedness was examined, as well as their thoughts, feelings, actions, and retrospective reflections on these spiritual moments.

Doctoral dissertation, 245 pages. The clinical data for this research were derived from three music psychotherapy cases of torture victims who in 2002 to 2004 lived as either asylum seekers or refugees in Finland. The patients were all traumatized men, originating from Central Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East, who received music therapy sessions as part of their rehabilitation. Music therapy was offered weekly or bi-monthly for the duration of one to two years. Music listening techniques, such as projective listening, guided imagery, and free association were applied in a psychoanalytic frame of reference. Data included 116 automatically audio recorded and transcribed therapy sessions, totalling over 100 hours of real time data that were both qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed by the researcher. While previous studies have examined refugees and other trauma sufferers, and some articles have even discussed music therapy among torture survivors, this is one of the first empirical research studies of music therapy specifically among patients who are survivors of torture.

The diffusion of a new genre of march songs pioneered by Nie Er was facilitated by compositional devices that reinforced the ideological message of the lyrics, and by the National Salvation Song Movement. By the mid-1930s, this grassroots movement, led by Liu Liangmo, converged with the tail end of the proletarian arts movement that sought to popularize mass art and create a “music for national defense.” Once the war broke out, both Nationalists and Communists provided organizational support for the song movement by sponsoring war zone service corps and mobile theatrical troupes that served as conduits for musicians to propagate their art in the hinterland. By the late 1930s, as the United Front unraveled, a majority of musicians involved in the National Salvation Song Movement moved to the Communist base areas. Their work for the New Fourth Route and Eighth Route Armies, along with Communist propaganda organizations, enabled their songs to spread throughout the ranks.     Western China, Popular Culture, and the Ambiguous Centrality of the Periphery Kevin Latham SOAS, University of London his essay explores various diverse and divergent representations of Western China1 in Chinese media and popular culture with the aim of considering how they, and their reappropriations, reproductions, and reinventions still populate TChina’s contemporary cultural landscape. In this way the essay will identify ways in which the peripherality of Western China has played, and continues to play, a key role in the constitution of mainstream Chinese popular culture. In particular, the essay will focus on examples from three different periods of Chinese cultural history: the Ming dynasty novelJourney to the West, revolutionary popular culture of the 1950s and 1960s, and cinema and television in the early post- Mao period. 1 Defining “Western China” is already problematic. China’s Western Development Plan (see below) designates Western China as the six provinces of Gansu, Guizhou, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan, as well as the five autonomous regions of Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, and Ningxia. Other Chinese government definitions of Western China leave out Inner Mongolia and Guangxi from this list and include the municipality of Chongqing. However, geographically, both of these definitions include some regions—such as Shaanxi and Guizhou—that are actually fairly “central” in location. Some Chinese participants in the Perth symposium pointed out that they and, by implication, some other Chinese would consider, in their popular imaginary, Sichuan, Shaanxi, and some areas of the Yellow River valley to be part of “Central” China. However, in this essay the term “Western China” does not refer to a rigidly defined geopolitical territory, nor do I seek to identify the geographical boundaries of popular conceptualizations of what is or is not Western or Central China.
