What to do if the alarm sounds
If you are outside You will be warned via the “Important public announcement” signal (VMA). Tone 7 seconds, silence 14 seconds, tone 7 seconds, etc. • Go inside. You have better protection inside than outside.
2 If you are inside You will receive the alarm signal as the RDS receiver activates and Sveriges Radio P4 reads an announcement. • Shut doors, windows and ventilation. This will keep out contaminated air. • Listen to Sveriges Radio P4 Kalmar. The station will broadcast news about what has happened and what you need to do. • Help others. Bring persons in need of protection indoors. • Stay inside. Do not go outside before the announcement that danger has passed has been made on Sveriges Radio P4 Kalmar.
Protect animals • Keep pets indoors. • Listen to Sveriges Radio P4 Kalmar for advice about grazing animals, pigs and other domestic animals. Measures that may become necessary: • Bring in animals that are outside, the first priority being milk cows. • If possible, shut doors and windows of animal stalls and barns containing fodder. • Avoid using water from shallow open bodies of water or ditches.
Important public announcement (VMA) If you were not at home when a VMA was broadcast, you can obtain information on what has happened at www.svt.se and SVT Text-TV, page 100, as long as a VMA situation is ongoing. The announcement that is read on the radio will also be published there on page 599. You can also find information on www.krisinformation.se, as well as on www.sosalarm.se.
3 Alarm test An alarm test will be carried out on the first non-holiday Monday in March, June, September and December. Outdoor alarm: The alarm will be tested at 3:00 p.m. with the signal “Important announcement”. The test will be concluded with the signal “Danger has passed”. Indoor alarm (RDS alarm): The alarm will be tested at 7:00 p.m. and Sveriges Radio P4 will read an announcement.
Evacuation
If the county administrative board orders evacuation • The county administrative board will announce on Sveriges Radio P4 Kalmar what areas are to be evacuated and will provide instructions to persons affected. • If you have access to a vehicle of your own, go to an evacuation centre outside the risk zone. Listen to Sveriges Radio P4 Kalmar to find out what evacuation centres are open. • If you cannot arrange your own transportation, go to your nearest assembly point (indicated with a on the map). Seniors and persons with a functional impairment will receive help in evacuating. • Children in preschool, school and after-school recreation centres will be evacuated as classes or groups to an evacuation centre outside the risk zone. The applicable evacuation location(s) will be announced on Sveriges Radio P4 Kalmar. • Residents of group homes, homes for the elderly, etc., will receive help in evacuating. • Bring any pets with you. • Listen to Sveriges Radio P4 Kalmar for advice about grazing animals, pigs and other domestic animals. Measures that may become necessary: -- Leave the animals in their stalls with sufficient water and fodder to last a few days. (hay and straw – no concentrate) -- Provide information about any remaining animals to personnel at evacuation station or to the closet police.

5 Iodine tablets You should only take iodine tablets on instruction from the county administrative board or the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.
Take the tablets at the recommended time. You need to take the tablets soon enough that they will have time to act before you take in any radioactive iodine.
The tablets fill up your thyroid gland with non-radioactive iodine and prevent the thyroid gland from absorbing the radioactive iodine. Adults over 40 do not need to take iodine tables, as scientific studies have shown that there is no risk of this age group developing thyroid cancer from radioactive iodine.
Dosage
Newborns, younger than one month: 1/4 tablet
Children 1 month – 3 years: 1/2 tablet
Children 3 – 12 years: 1 tablet
Children over 12 years: 2 tablets
Adults, under 40 years: 2 tablets
Adults over age 40 do not need to take tablets (See above) Pregnant females and nursing mothers should take iodine tablets a maximum of two times.
The tablet may be chewed or swallowed Kaliumjodid whole. The tablet tastes salty. It is therefore 65mg a good idea to take it with a glass of water. For newborns, the dose can be crushed and dissolved in a little water and jam or similar mixture. One tablet dose provides protection for two 24-hour periods. 6 What nuclear power station personnel do in the event of an accident If a serious disruption were to occur, personnel and visitors gather at the nuclear power station’s assembly points. At the same time, the nuclear power station’s emergency preparedness organisation start procedures to manage the disruption. The job of the emergency preparedness organisation is to: • ensure that the reactor is brought to a controlled, stable state • prevent the release of radioactive substances into the environment All personnel not required for this task may be sent home at an early stage – this is referred to as a “Return home order”. This is done to enable the emergency preparedness organisation to focus on its tasks. Such a “Return home order” will also be imposed in connection with major weather events, storms or other disruptions. The fact that personnel are leaving the nuclear power station need therefore not mean that the event affects the public. If the public is affected, VMA is always used, in the form of a typhoon alarm and an announcement on the radio.
