International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 4239–4257 1932–8036/20160005 Doing “Authentic” News: Voices, Forms, and Strategies in Presenting Television News DEBING FENG1 Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, China Unlike print news that is static and mainly composed of written text, television news is dynamic and needs to be delivered with diversified presentational modes and forms. Drawing upon Bakhtin’s heteroglossia and Goffman’s production format of talk, this article examined the presentational forms and strategies deployed in BBC News at Ten and CCTV’s News Simulcast. It showed that the employment of different presentational elements and forms in the two programs reflects two contrasting types of news discourse. The discourse of BBC News tends to present different, and even confrontational, voices with diversified presentational forms, such as direct mode of address and “fresh talk,” thus likely to accentuate the authenticity of the news. The other type of discourse (i.e., CCTV News) seems to prefer monologic news presentation and prioritize studio-based, scripted news reading, such as on-camera address or voice- overs, and it thus creates a single authoritative voice that is likely to undermine the truth of the news. Early in the 1970s, researchers in the field of critical linguistics (CL; e.g., Fowler, 1991; Fowler, Hodge, Kress, & Trew, 1979; Hodge & Kress, 1993) paid great attention to the ideological meaning of news by drawing upon a kit of linguistic tools such as modality, transitivity, and transformation. -

So far, we have only talked about these duties in the abstract sense. It is now time to take a closer look at the step-by-step process of putting a show together. Story Ideas and News Value A newscast starts with a series of story ideas, which are nothing more than potential ideas that could eventually end up in the show. Story ideas come from a variety of sources, and the good producer will often come to work with several story ideas already formulated. These may come from other media, be follow-ups from stories done the previous day, or be a consequence of personal observation (see Table 3.1 for examples). Producers like their reporters to come to work with story ideas, and reporters should have some concrete suggestions for stories, even if these ideas never pan out. Too many reporters show up with the expectation that producers will have a story already assigned to them. This can waste a lot of precious news time as reporters scramble to try and set up a story or contact news sources. Producers and reporters will suggest their story ideas at the editorial meeting, where they and the news director will discuss events going on in the area. The purpose of the meeting is to consider all possible story ideas and narrow them down to a list of stories that will go in the newscast. -

21 Types Of News In the fIrst several chapters, we saw media systems in flux. Fewer newspaper journalists but more websites, more hours of local TV news but fewer reporters, more “news/talk” radio but less local news radio, national cable news thriving, local cable news stalled. But what matters most is not the health of a particular sector but how these changes net out, and how the pieces fit together. Here we will consider the health of the news media based on the region of coverage, whether neigh- borhood, city, state, country, or world. Hyperlocal The term “hyperlocal” commonly refers to news coverage on a neighborhood or even block-by-block level. The tradi- tional media models, even in their fattest, happiest days could not field enough reporters to cover every neighborhood on a granular level. As in all areas, there are elements of progress and retreat. On one hand, metropolitan newspapers have cut back on regional editions, which in all likelihood means less coverage of neighborhoods in those regions. But the Internet has revolutionized the provision of hyperlocal information. The first wave of technology— LISTSERV® and other email groups—made it far easier for citizens to inform one another of what was happening with the neighborhood crime watch or the new grocery store or the death of citizens can now snap a beloved senior who lived on the block for 40 years. More recently, social media tools have enabled citizens to self-organize, and connect in ever more picture of potholes and dynamic ways. Citizens can now snap pictures of potholes and send them to send to city hall, or share city hall, or share with each other via Facebook, Twitter or email. -

Murrow Original album Fred Friendly Capturing moments in time, capturing history, is something people have long sought to do—in writing, in photographs, and in sound. In 1948, legendary newsmen Edward R. Murrow and soon-to-be legendary news producer Fred Friendly gave to the record-buying public the chance to capture history, own it, and to relive it via the great and important radio news reports of an era just gone by. Fred Friendly (nee Ferdinand Friendly Wachenheimer) was one of the most important, influential journalists of the 20th century. Born in New York City in 1915, Friendly showed an early interest in and aptitude for radio. In his youth, he and his father built a radio receiver in order to listen to boxing matches being broadcast over KDKA in Pittsburgh. While in high school, in the 1930s, Friendly began to make his first radio appearances on radio by being an actor on various radio shows broadcast over WJAR in Providence, Rhode Island. By 1936, after graduation, Friendly went to work at Rhode Island’s WEAN, a NBC Blue affiliate. At WEAN, Friendly worked as an announcer, conducted man-on-the-street interviews, and produced a daily five-minute biography series titled “Footprints in the Sands of Time.” Some years later, long after the “Footprints” installments were packed away into mothballs and Friendly was eking out a career at various radio outlets including Armed Forces Radio, Friendly was approached by the Decca label to put “Footprints” out in record form. -

Digital Journalism: Making News, Breaking News
MAPPING DIGITAL MEDIA: GLOBAL FINDINGS DIGITAL JOURNALISM: MAKING NEWS, BREAKING NEWS Mapping Digital Media is a project of the Open Society Program on Independent Journalism and the Open Society Information Program Th e project assesses the global opportunities and risks that are created for media by the switch- over from analog broadcasting to digital broadcasting; the growth of new media platforms as sources of news; and the convergence of traditional broadcasting with telecommunications. Th ese changes redefi ne the ways that media can operate sustainably while staying true to values of pluralism and diversity, transparency and accountability, editorial independence, freedom of expression and information, public service, and high professional standards. Th e project, which examines the changes in-depth, builds bridges between researchers and policymakers, activists, academics and standard-setters. It also builds policy capacity in countries where this is less developed, encouraging stakeholders to participate in and infl uence change. At the same time, this research creates a knowledge base, laying foundations for advocacy work, building capacity and enhancing debate. Covering 56 countries, the project examines how these changes aff ect the core democratic service that any media system should provide—news about political, economic and social aff airs. Th e MDM Country Reports are produced by local researchers and partner organizations in each country. Cumulatively, these reports provide a unique resource on the democratic role of digital media. In addition to the country reports, research papers on a range of topics related to digital media have been published as the MDM Reference Series. Abstract This study examines whether the award-winning news show The Newsroom depicted on HBO practices what John McManus defined as market-driven journalism. McManus posited that organizations practicing market- driven journalism compete in the four markets he describes in his market theory for news production. This study found that The Newsroom depicts an organization that does indeed practice market-driven journalism, with results interpreted through the lens of market theory for news production.
