12/19/2018 1953 New Year Honours 1953 New Year Honours The New Year Honours 1953 for the United Kingdom were announced on 30 December 1952,[1] to celebrate the year passed and mark the beginning of 1953. This was the first New Year Honours since the accession of Queen Elizabeth II. The Honours list is a list of people who have been awarded one of the various orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom. Honours are split into classes ("orders") and are graded to distinguish different degrees of achievement or service, most medals are not graded. The awards are presented to the recipient in one of several investiture ceremonies at Buckingham Palace throughout the year by the Sovereign or her designated representative. The orders, medals and decorations are awarded by various honours committees which meet to discuss candidates identified by public or private bodies, by government departments or who are nominated by members of the public.[2] Depending on their roles, those people selected by committee are submitted to Ministers for their approval before being sent to the Sovereign for final The insignia of the Grand Cross of the approval. As the "fount of honour" the monarch remains the final arbiter for awards.[3] In the case Order of St Michael and St George of certain orders such as the Order of the Garter and the Royal Victorian Order they remain at the personal discretion of the Queen.[4] The recipients of honours are displayed here as they were styled before their new honour, and arranged by honour, with classes (Knight, Knight Grand Cross, etc.) and then divisions (Military, Civil, etc.) as appropriate. -

arts Article On Hybrid Creativity Andy Lomas ID Department of Computing, Goldsmiths College, University of London, London SE14 6NW, UK; [email protected] Received: 2 May 2018; Accepted: 5 July 2018; Published: 9 July 2018 Abstract: This article reviews the development of the author’s computational art practice, where the computer is used both as a device that provides the medium for generation of art (‘computer as art’) as well as acting actively as an assistant in the process of creating art (‘computer as artist’s assistant’), helping explore the space of possibilities afforded by generative systems. Drawing analogies with Kasparov’s Advanced Chess and the deliberate development of unstable aircraft using fly-by-wire technology, the article argues for a collaborative relationship with the computer that can free the artist to more fearlessly engage with the challenges of working with emergent systems that exhibit complex unpredictable behavior. The article also describes ‘Species Explorer’, the system the author has created in response to these challenges to assist exploration of the possibilities afforded by parametrically driven generative systems. This system provides a framework to allow the user to use a number of different techniques to explore new parameter combinations, including genetic algorithms, and machine learning methods. As the system learns the artist’s preferences the relationship with the computer can be considered to change from one of assistance to collaboration. Introduction How are we to work creatively with generative systems that computationally create results? In particular, how should we work with systems deliberately designed to encourage emergence: complex systems where results are intrinsically difficult to predict? There is a strong analogy with plant breeding, where we are working with a medium that is naturally rich. -
Altitude Sickness Sports Club Membership
THE Yeovil Cycling Club October 2009 Altitude sickness The conclusion of the Evening Time Trial Series finished with the traditional dash up High Ham for the Hill Climb. We were joined by a number of other clubs, and some had just come from competing in a 25. One of them being last years champion, Tom Alliban, who choose to sit it out this year, although he was keen to offer advice to his fellow club members as they neared the top of the hill! The fastest Yeovil rider was Anthony Morris, which considering all the 'practice' he puts in each week on the Club Runs was no surprise. He was just 13 seconds behind the fastest man on the day, Rob Edgell of Somer Valley CC. Rob was followed by Chards' new protégé Sebastian Bayliss (15) and the man he has been giving a hard time to on their training runs, Rex Facey (but to give an old man his due Rex had just done the 25 in 58 minutes!). Hugo had to relinquish his club title but only by two seconds. It was good to see so many YCC riders competing, no matter how seriously they took it – going back for a bar end stopper which fell out half way up the hill might suggest a lack of serious commitment – (only joking Mike, especially as I was sat on the sidelines doing the hard bit of taking the pictures! –Ed). Thanks to everyone that has ridden, helped or contributed in any way to making it another great year for the TTs. -
