Klychnikov a , * a Pyatigorsk State University, Russian Federation Abstract The article reveals the specifics of the slave trade in the conditions of the North Caucasus. The circumstances of the origin of this phenomenon, the factors that influenced its features and scale are shown. It is concluded that the need for slave labor among local societies was small, and they preferred to sell slaves outside the region. This was one of the compensating factors with the help of which the lack of their own means of subsistence was partially satisfied. t is suggested that there is a "Malthusian trap" influencing the specifics of the economic, political, social and cultural situation in the region. This practice existed throughout the periods of Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The presence of strong demand stimulated the capture of slaves, who were later sent to the Asian and Western European markets. The Caucasus became part of the "slave transit", and large regional centers for the sale of people arose here. Raids aimed at seizing "human goods" became part of the institution of socialization of youth. They played an important role in the process of allocating the nobility from local communities. With the advent of the Russian authorities in the Caucasus, they begin to actively fight the slave trade. For this, both completely peaceful methods (for example, ransom) and harsh military measures were used. The peak of confrontation falls on the first half of the 19th century, after which the scope of this fishery is significantly reduced. This was explained not only by the success of weapons, but also by positive changes in the economic structure of the autochthonous peoples. However, the weakening and disintegration of Russian statehood is leading to a revival of the slave trade. This return to archaism took place at the beginning of the 20th century, when the country experienced a series of revolutions and the Civil War. At the end of the last century, the collapse of the USSR was accompanied by a paralysis of power, an increase in xenophobia, and economic collapse. The influence of unfavorable foreign policy factors also affected. All this again actualized the problem of slavery, the relapses of which could not be eradicated even today. Keywords: slaves, prisoners, raid, goods, market, hostages, the North Caucasus, socialization, "Malthusian trap", institute. 1. Введение Актуальность темы исследования обусловлена той ролью, которую

NON-REGULAR TROOPS IN THE ERA OF DECLINE: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF RUSSIAN COSSACKS AND AUSTRIAN GRENZERS OF THE 1860s Artyom Yu. PERETYATKO∗ Teymur E. ZULFUGARZADE∗∗ Abstract. Austrian historian A. Kappeler suggests that a detailed comparison of Russian Cossack troops and the Austrian Militärgrenze (Military Frontier) will be extremely revealing. The paper shows that such comparison was ventured as early as in 1860 by a Russian general, N. I. Krasnov. He demonstrated that non-regular troops in a European state of the nineteenth century were doomed to extinction for economic reasons. Based on archival materials on Cossacks and Grenzers in the Russian State Military Historical Archive, State Archive of the Rostov Region and the Manuscripts Department at the National Library of Russia, we show that forecasts made by N. I. Krasnov were substantiated. The result of the paper is the conclusion that in the 1860s, non-regular troops of the classical type were doomed. Keywords: Grenzers, Cossacks, military reforms, settled troops, N. I. Krasnov. Introduction A Russian historian who endeavours to analyse the “similarity” of the Cossack troops which once existed in their country and the Austrian Militärgrenze immediately finds themselves in a difficult situation. This similarity was mentioned in Russian translations of German articles as early as the middle of the nineteenth century,1 and in the late twentieth century it came into the sight of Russian scholars in Cossack studies.2 However, Russian-language works, as a rule, stopped at an acknowledgement of some abstract commonality. The reason behind this situation is the fact that the history of the Militärgrenze has so far remained a kind of terra incognita for Russian readers: a sphere of historiographical myths and specific half-truths.

Part 2 Artyom Y. Peretyatko a , b , *, Teymur E. Zulfugarzade c a International Network Center for Fundamental and Applied Research, Washington, USA b Volgograd State University, Volgograd, Russian Federation c Russian Economic University named after G.V. Plekhanov, Russian Federation Abstract The question about the degree of development of primary education in the Don in the XIX century remains controversial among historians. Archival documents and testimonies of contemporaries allow us to cover this question in completely different ways (both quotes in the title are taken from them). The article attempts to summarize statistical information about the development of primary education in the Don Cossack environment from 1799 to 1899. A number of myths prevalent in historiography (for example, about the significant role of zemstvos in the creation of new educational institutions in villages or about the crisis of Don education in 1880−1890) are debunked.

Peretyatko a , b , a International Network Center for Fundamental and Applied Research, Washington, USA b Volgograd State University, Volgograd, Russian Federation Abstract The article is devoted to literary propaganda among the Don Cossacks during the Crimean War. The author found several patriotic poems written by Don Cossacks during the reign of Nicholas I in the collection of the Don general, public figure and writer I.S. Ulyanov (State archive of the Rostov region). One of them, “The Eagle and Two Dogs” by F. Bykov, was a reaction to the entry of Great Britain and France into the Crimean War and was accompanied by an explanatory letter (in the article both of these documents are given in full). After analyzing these texts, as well as other poems, the author came to the conclusion that before the Crimean War on Don there existed patriotic literature, but it was distributed in manuscripts. The appointment of a patriotic M.Kh. Senyutkin to the post of editor of the Don Oblast Gazette and the beginning of the Crimean War led to the fact that patriotic artistic texts began to be actively printed.

Jews in Wartime Urban Space: Ethnic Mobilization and the Formation of a New Community in Kyiv, 1914-1918 by Larysa Bilous A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Larysa Bilous, 2018 ABSTRACT This dissertation is a case study of wartime Jewish politics and social life Jewish life in Kyiv from 1914 to the end of 1918. The research engages the larger questions of Central and Eastern European history during the Great War in general, and of the Russian Empire in particular—mass mobilization, social engineering, and the emergence of new social and political communities. Kyiv, the capital of the South-Western region of the Russian Empire, was situated in the center of the Pale of Jewish Settlement. During the war, Kyiv was the closest major city to the South-Western front and as such became the transit city for Jews deported for resettlement. Philanthropic activity, developed to aid the Jewish refugees, – the Jewish “home front” – mobilized the Jewish population and significantly democratized communal life. I argue that relief work during the war created a new and officially- sanctioned Jewish public space that enabled the development of a Jewish civil society and established an imagined national community. The wartime turmoil, growing state anti-Semitism, and the activity of Jewish relief organizations all stimulated political activity and furthered the development of a civic collective identity, which enabled an impressive Jewish national movement from 1917–1920. The revolutionary events of 1917 changed Kyiv’s identity and its status in the region.
