Pictures, then a small, struggling studio, began a partnership with the Vitaphone Corporation to use its sound-on-disc technology to produce films with synchronized playback of sound with visual images. WB made a series of one-reel sound short films to demonstrate (Click to Play) the technology, playing them before other features. Audiences responded so enthusiastically that Warner Bros. was convinced to bet big on talking motion pictures as the next big thing in movies. Their first feature-length film to use the Vitaphone system was The Jazz Singer, which premiered at Warners’ Theatre in New York on October 6, 1928. It starred Al Jolson, a famous singer and Broadway star of the day. The film included two short scenes in which Jolson’s spoken word was synchronized to the picture, delivering life-like dialog in real-time that thrilled movie goers, comparable to the most immersive, multi-sensory special effects in today’s cinema. Queries or requests for any other use, or if a more substantial copy is required, should be directed to the owner of the intellectual property rights. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis consists of a selection of my published work from 1989-2015, accompanied by an essay and a bibliography. The essay looks at the ways in which I am drawn towards marginal and liminal zones within fiction, including the areas between Young Adult (YA) and Adult fiction, crime fiction and literary fiction, and that between depicting reality and fictionalising it. I also consider the use of narrative mode in defining these liminal areas. By ‘liminal’, I mean occupying a position at, or on both sides of a boundary or threshold, rather than the word’s other, looser sense, where it means ‘vague’. The examples of fiction selected are intended to display the range of my published work since joining Nottingham Trent University. -

For Exhibitors September 21, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 135 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising We celebrate the remarkable career of actress Frances McDormand, who has delighted audiences for 35 years with her portrayals of strong-willed and colorful heroines. Her debut to feature film was in 1984 in Blood Simple, directed by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. Joel and Frances met in 1983 during her audition for the film, became a couple and married the next year. McDormand also starred in the Coen Brothers’ comedies Raising Arizona (1987) and Fargo (1996), in which she played a very pregnant detective, Marge Gunderson, with an unforgettable Norwegian-American accent. McDormand has earned critical acclaim throughout her long and prolific career for her performances in film and television and on stage. In fact, she is one of only 24 actors to have won Academy, Emmy and Tony Blood Simple Awards, a feat known as the Triple Crown of Acting. Her most recent role is in Chole Zhao’s Nomadland, about a (1984) woman in her 60’s who sets off in a van to wander through the American West, a modern-day nomad. The film and McDormand’s performance have emerged as darlings of the 2020 International Film Festival circuit. For Exhibitors October 12, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 138 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising Sparked by this year’s renewed interest in independent distributors and genre films, we celebrate the creativity of American International Pictures, the pioneer of mass-production, low-budget film making. AIP was founded in 1954 as American Releasing Corporation (ARC) by Samuel Arkoff, an entertainment lawyer, and James Nicholson, a former sales manager for Realart Pictures. They soon expanded into production so they could take full control of their product, both creatively and financially. AIP developed a checklist of creative elements to ensure a film’s appeal to their target youth audience, largely overlooked by studios of the day. Their ARKOFF formula, named after the founder, included these elements: Action, Revolution, Killing, Oratory, Fantasy and Fornication. AIP would frequently bundle multiple pictures to play as double features at the nearly 4000 drive-ins (Click to Play) operating in the US in the 50’s and 60’s. One of AIP’s famously prolific and successful directors, was Roger Corman, "The Pope of Pop Cinema", who established a cult following for himself and AIP through his adaptions of Edgar Allen Poe tales as horror films. Famously, AIP’s new project development began by creating the film’s title and movie poster, which was then market-tested to confirm interest before the screenwriter, director and cast were hired. The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Amy Bright, 2016 Abstract Recent research by Neilsen reports that adult readers purchase 80% of all young adult novels sold, even though young adult literature is a category ostensibly targeted towards teenage readers (Gilmore). More than ever before, young adult (YA) literature is at the center of some of the most interesting literary conversations, as writers, readers, and publishers discuss its wide appeal in the twenty-first century. My dissertation joins this vibrant discussion by examining the ways in which YA literature has transformed to respond to changing social and technological contexts. Today, writing, reading, and marketing YA means engaging with technological advances, multiliteracies and multimodalities, and cultural and social perspectives. A critical examination of five YA texts – Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, Libba Bray’s Beauty Queens, Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up, John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, and Jaclyn Moriarty’s The Ghosts of Ashbury High – helps to shape understanding about the changes and the challenges facing this category of literature as it responds in a variety of ways to new contexts. In the first chapter, I explore the history of YA literature in order to trace the ways that this literary category has changed in response to new conditions to appeal to and serve a new generation of readers, readers with different experiences, concerns, and contexts over time. -
