WB made a series of one-reel sound short films to demonstrate (Click to Play) the technology, playing them before other features. Audiences responded so enthusiastically that Warner Bros. was convinced to bet big on talking motion pictures as the next big thing in movies. Their first feature-length film to use the Vitaphone system was The Jazz Singer, which premiered at Warners’ Theatre in New York on October 6, 1928. It starred Al Jolson, a famous singer and Broadway star of the day. The film included two short scenes in which Jolson’s spoken word was synchronized to the picture, delivering life-like dialog in real-time that thrilled movie goers, comparable to the most immersive, multi-sensory special effects in today’s cinema. THE COMMUTER PRODUCTION NOTES RELEASE DATES Australia, New Zealand & Germany (STUDIOCANAL): January 11th 2018 US (Lionsgate): January 12th 2018 UK (STUDIOCANAL): January 19th 2018 France (STUDIOCANAL): January 24th 2018 CONTACTS [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] 1 ABOUT THE PRODUCTION Following the worldwide success of Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night, star Liam Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra reunite for a fourth time with explosive thriller THE COMMUTER about one man‘s frantic quest to prevent disaster on a packed commuter train. The screenplay proved irresistible to both the director and star, not just for the bravura of the action and the thrill of the suspense but for the moral conundrum the protagonist is faced with and the consequences it has on him, the passengers on the train and his family at home. “THE COMMUTER asks the audience, if someone asked you to do something that seems insignifi- cant but you’re not sure of the outcome in exchange for a considerable financial reward, would you do it?” says Jaume Collet-Serra. “That‘s the philosophical choice that our central character - a man of 60 who’s just been fired, has no savings and is mortgaged to the hilt - is faced with. Is he think- ing just about himself or is he going to take into consideration the possible moral consequences of what he’s asked to do? That’s the question we want the audience to ask themselves.” For Neeson, it was also the story’s real-time narrative that gives it a thrilling momentum.

For Exhibitors September 21, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 135 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising We celebrate the remarkable career of actress Frances McDormand, who has delighted audiences for 35 years with her portrayals of strong-willed and colorful heroines. Her debut to feature film was in 1984 in Blood Simple, directed by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. Joel and Frances met in 1983 during her audition for the film, became a couple and married the next year. McDormand also starred in the Coen Brothers’ comedies Raising Arizona (1987) and Fargo (1996), in which she played a very pregnant detective, Marge Gunderson, with an unforgettable Norwegian-American accent. McDormand has earned critical acclaim throughout her long and prolific career for her performances in film and television and on stage. In fact, she is one of only 24 actors to have won Academy, Emmy and Tony Blood Simple Awards, a feat known as the Triple Crown of Acting. Her most recent role is in Chole Zhao’s Nomadland, about a (1984) woman in her 60’s who sets off in a van to wander through the American West, a modern-day nomad. The film and McDormand’s performance have emerged as darlings of the 2020 International Film Festival circuit. Nomadland is being distributed by Searchlight Pictures and opens in theatres nationwide on 12/2. “I'm a character actress, plain and simple...Who can worry about a career? Have a life. Movie stars have careers - actors work, and then they don't work, and then they work again.” – Frances McDormand Three Billboards
