held in great respect by all opponents, and a hard fight and a stiff game for victory Protected by copyright. always resulted. We always played to win, and quite surprised our opponents in batting, bowling, and smart work in the field. "Taking the cricket season on the whole, considering the weather, duties to be arranged for, camping season, &c., our team is to be congratulated on the achieve ment of winning so many matches. Altogether we have played 22, won 18, lost 2. drawn 2. The matches we lost were against our old rivals, the Ordnance Corps and the Royal Munster Fusiliers, the latter in the semi-final of the Ian Hamilton Garrison Cricket Cup. "Our success is mainly due to the excellent all-round work of our officers, Major· Addams Williams (Captain), Major Steele (sub-Captain), Captains Cowey, Ainsworth and Meadows, and Corporal Cowx. Major Addams WilIiams and Coporal Cowx have batted very consistently throughout the season and the brunt of the attack was generally carried by Captain Meadows and Corporal Cowx, who, in ten matches, bowled throughout the innings without being changed. In recognition of 'services rendered' the Commanding Officer, Major Addams WiIliams and Captain Cowey presented three cricket bats for the 'best batting' average and the best 'bowling ,. average and' most catches,' which were won by Corporal Cowx, Private Tomlyn, and http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ Private Ellis, respectively. NOTES FROM WOOLWICH.-Major T. MacDermott writes, October 20, 1912: "Since my last notes we had the pleasure of dining with Colonel F. L. Stephenson, C.B., V.D .. and the officers of the 4th and 5th London Division Fields Ambulance (T.F.). We have recently lost Majors H. A. Bray and T. P. Jones, lately Registrar Protected by copyright. {)f the Royal Herbert Hospital, the former transferred to the Egyptian Army and the latter to Pembroke Dock. Both of these officers will be a loss, as they have taken a great interest in recent events affecting the Corps at the station. "There is widespread regret in Woolwich at the approaching departure of Major R. H. S. Fuhr, D.S.O., for and we wish Major and Mrs. Fuhr good luck at their new station. "Major J. Cowan, who left us last trooping season for India, has very kindly presented the Mess with an artist proof engraving. The Mess walls are spacious and have plenty of room for similar gifts. Naturally those which are first received will be hung in the best positions. "Cricket has not been much of a success this year owing to the bad weather and to the many calls on our personnel for duty away from Woolwich. Captains R. H. MacNicol and H. C. Winckworth played for the Kent County Lawn 'Tennis Club this ·season. Lieutenant-Colonel T. Du B. Whaite is running the Royal Army Medical Corps Badminton Glub, which so far promises to be a great success. Captain W. McConaghy had the honour of being appointed the Treasurer land Secretary of the Woolwich Military Art Association." http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ Serjeant-Major R. Green writes :- "Annual Sports.-·Owing to so many N.C.Os. and men of the Companies being away at the Camp of Instruction at Tidworth between May and August, and at the Medical Exercises in Aldershot, and owing to the general manoouvres following so closely afterwards, the annual sports had this year to be abandoned. "Smoking Concert. - An excellent Company Smoking Concert was held on September 19, which was made the occasion of a farewell to Major T. P. Jones and Captain J. M. B. Rahilly, who have just vacated their respective appointments of Commanding Officer and Adjutant of 12 and 34 Companie~, and to bid welcome to Major Ensor, D.S.O., and Captain W. " Serjeant-Major Green occupied the chair and was supported by Serjeant-Major How. "Among the officers present were Majors Jameson, McDermott, Fuhr, Jones, Ensor, Chopping and Hunter; Captains Rahilly, Sedgwick and Winckworth; and Lieutenants Bisset, Spence, and Barry. "The company numbered over two hundred and all Corps iu the Garrison were represented among our guests. " Owing to the length of the programme encores had to be restricted; the artislles all acquitted themselves to the very evident satisfaction of everyone present. "The toasts during the evening were' The King,' 'The Officers,' , Absent Comrades,' http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ and' Guests,' to all of which there was a very hearty response. In proposing the toast of the Officers, the Chairman alluded to the regret with which tbey were losing their C.O. (Major Jones), and their Adjutant (Captain Rahilly). In reply, Major Jones in a very able speech thanked the Officers, W.Os., N.C.Os. and men of the Woolwich Companies for the very willing assistance they had always given him during his command, and which had gone far to make his post a highly pleasant one, and one he much regretted he had to vacate. In concluding, he wished the Companies all success and hoped that they would m~intain their reputation for efficiency in duty and in sport, but of that he had no doubt. Captain Rahilly also responded suitably. "The Chairman conveyed the welcome of the W.Os., N.C.Os. and men at Woolwich to Major Ensor, D.S.O., as their new C.O., and to Captain McConaghy, their new Adjutant. Major Ensor tbanked the Chairman for the welcome extended to him and hoped that the same creditable efficiency in duty and sport would still be maintained.

Letters of regret at inability to be present were received from Surgeon-General on September 26, 2021 by guest. Whitehead, C.B., D.D.M.S. Eastern Command, and from Colonel R. W. 1<'ord, D.SO., A.D.M.S. Woolwich DIstrict. During the evening, Serjeant Whestone was presented with a handsome cake-stand suitably engraved. as a mark of esteem from the members ()f the Serjeants' Mess, on his retiring from the service. Serjeant Whestone thanked his comrades very suitably. "The company was well catered for by the Committee, which was composed as follows:- " President: Serjeant·Major Green. Members: Staff-Serjeant Pettley, Serjeants Dell and Blundell; Corporals Rearn, Sparks and Peacock; and Privates Welch, Fitzgerald and Bellingham. "Serjeants' Outing.--The usual winter theatre outing of the members of the Serjeants' Mess took place on October 4, when a visit was made to Ris Majesty's Theatre to see' Drake.' Twenty-five members took advantage of the arrangements and a most pleasant evening was spent by all. "Oorporals Outing.-The members of the Corporals' Social Club paid a visit to the 'Palladium' on October 11, after having dinner at 'Armand's,' and I am informed that a jolly evening was spent by the sixteen members of this club who took part. "Games Tournament.-The members of the Serjeants' Mess, R.A.M.C_, London, paid a visit to the Woolwich Mess for a games tournament on October 17, when billiards and various games of cards were indulged in, the result of which was a win for London at billiards on points, and a win for .Woolwich at cards. "A thoroughly convivial evening was spent. The return tournament takes place at Millbank next month. "Social Gathering.-Our usual Serjeants' Mess Winter 'social evenings' com menced on Friday, October 18, when there was a goodly gathering for the first dance and an excellent repertoire of the latest dance music supplied by members of the , Bussey Orchestra.' " Football Notes.-Our team (who are holders of the Rarwood Challenge Cup and the Blackheath and District League Cup) have entered for four competitions this season. In addition to the two already named, we are in the Woolwich Wednesday League and the Charlton Charity Cup Competition. This gives us a fixture list of over forty matches, so the team will have a fairly strenuous time. We have three or four changes from last season's team, but the latest additions are good SUbstitutes, so' we are looking forward to another successful season. Rowever, time and football luck will tell. If we are to retain our hold on the Rarwood Cup visits will have to be made by our team to London in the first round, Chatham or Dover in the second round, Cosham, http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ Netleyor Tidworth in the third round, and to Aldershot for the final, a somewhat, heavy task for the purpose. NOTES FROM CAIRO.-Captain and Qnartermaster writes September 19" 1912: "On August 21, half the Company visited the pyramids and tombs of Shakkarha. Several of the officers accompanied them and after travelling by train from Cairo to Bedrachin, mounted donkeys, and in a short time arrived at Memphis or rather the J R Army Med Corps: first published as 10.1136/jramc-19-05-22 on 1 November 1912. 117 site of the ancient city. Memphis has been buried for many centuries, but under the date. palms there are shown two large Oollossi of Rameses II, and a very interesting Sphinx, recently discovered. ' " The Rev. E. A. S. Gell, our Ohaplain, was able to tell us the history of these Oollossi. After a short stay 'under the shade of the palms,' the party rode on to Shakkarah, the cemetery of the late inhabitants of Memphis. Here we found many tombs and pyramids. The tomb of Ti, Serapeum (Tomb of the Bulls) and others were visited, and an adjournment was made to Mariette's house, where under a shady verandah a most excellent lunch had been provided by Serjeant Wilkin, and a small fatigue party soon had the tables laid. The iced drinks were much appreciated. While the N.O.O.'s and men were enjoying themselves, the officers had lunch at another table. After a few more tombs of interest had been explored, the party returned to tea, and then mounted donkeys, and followed by a howling crowd of donkey boys, started on the nine mile ride across the desert to Gizeh, where are the famous Pyramids, so much visited by tourists, as they are easy of access from Oairo. Here kindly thought and arrangement had provided sandwiches and drinks, and the party, having dispatched these, returned by tramcar to the Oitadel, where they found dinner awaiting them. "On August 28, the same programme was gone through by the remainder of the Oompany. In 33 Oompany we always have those who will work for their fellows, and many thanks are due to those who undertook the fatigue work; of course they were not the same men on both occasions. The whole arrangements were left in the hands of our popular pay clerk, Serjeant Rann, and our chef, Serjeant Wilkin. No better hands could they have been left in, for while one managed the transport work the other looked after the commissariat department. Officers and men thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and one and all expressed themselves in terms of the highest praise at the successful issue of the committee's efforts. Protected by copyright. " On September 11, a most successful concert was held at the Oitadel in the Royal Army Medical Oorps Serjeant's Mess, in honour of Mr. Varnfield, the popular band master of the Suffolks, Quartermaster-Serjeant Oonolly and Serjeant Keeble, both of the Royal Army Medical Oorps. "During the half-time interval, Serjeant-Major Houston, the chairman, thanked l\fr. Varnfield for his kindness ever since they had been aSSoOciated at the Oitadel, and presented him, in the name of the Serjeants' Mess of the Royal Army Medical Oorps, with a handsome timepiece, and a photo in a moucharabiaframe, of the Serjeants of his, the chairman's Oorps. In reply, Mr. Varnfield said, that he thought that his stay at the Oitadel had been the best period of his long army career, and made a very touching allusion to the photo of his hosts. "In answer to Serjeant-Major Houston's vote of thanks to the officers who were present, OaptainHunt replied that they were always pleased to assist on such occasions, and what was more, they always thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Quartermaster Serjeant Oonolly and Serjeant Keeble also returned thanks, and, after the pianist, Mr. Wilson, had been appropriately thanked by the chairman, the proceedings came to a close, after a thoroughly jolly evening. " The Mess room was tastefully arranged by Serjeant Wilkin, who went to consider able trouble in arranging the programme and preparing light refreshments. "On September 20 and 21, the annual Garrison Sports were held on the 'Slade' ground at Abassia, which was crowded, quite 4,000 spectators being present on the tlaturday. The various events were keenly contested and some fine records for Egypt were made. Besides money prizes, the two challenge cups were competed for, one cup for' Large Units,' and the other for' Small Units.' Last year the former was won by the 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade and the latter by 33 Oompany, R.A.M.O., and there naturally was much jubilation when the two cups arrived at the Oitadel. " Without being tedious, perhaps it may interest your readers to know that last year the' Large Units' ran among themselves, the' Small Units' doing likewise. This made a very long and dull afternoon especially as a 3-mile race was thrown in. This year it was decided to run all together and let the' Small Units' take their chance. This decision caused the competitors of 33rd Oompany to wonder how on earth any of them Protected by copyright. were to get into a final, and they went down to run their heats' with their tails down,' more or less_ Their fears, however, were groundless, for, although the Royal Engineers (the winners two years ago), the A.S.O., the R.H.A., and R.G.A. were wiped out in the heats, 33 Oompany came up smiling and were left in the finals of five events, the A.O.O. of the' Small Units' being their opponents in one only. " The five events were the ~-mile, long jump, i-mile, high jump, and relay race. Ooming up so well made the retention of the cup almost a certainty, so the competitors went down with a good heart to compete in the finals. "In the Garrison Athletic Sports, Private Hallett scored the first points, running fourth in the ~-mile, followed by Simms (sixth), doing 19 ft. in the long jump, a very creditable performance, as the winner only did 19 ft. 10 in. In the i-mile, Private Paskell ran a good fifth, notwithstanding a bad start and so having to run round his luen. " Our hopes of more points were pinned on Geary in the high jump, and they were not disappointed, for jumping in a ·nice easy style, to the surprise of everyone, he landed the first prize, or rather tied for it with one of the Rifle Brigade. It was a fine performance. In the relay nice we were sixth and last, being run off our feet. http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ "Private Sinims, a fine little all-round athlete, was fourth in the obstacle race, and very stiff obstacles they were. He would undoubtedly have won but for the fact that a competitor tried to help himself up one of the obstacles by catching hold of his leg. . " Those who took such pains to retain the cup for another year must feel some pride in running within 5~ points of the Scots Guards, and beating the Devonshire Regiment by 4~ points. Lieutenant-General Sir John G. Maxwell, K.e.B., O.V_O., O.M.G., D.S.O., who kindly presented the prizes, made a beftting speech, in which he referred to the high standard of sport that had been shown_

(5) The Band Accounts were considered and passed, and are appended to these Minutes. A sum of £100 was voted towards the current quarter's expenses. Captain Cotterill, The Band President, explained, with reference to Minute 5 of the last Meeting, that the aggregate total fees for Band engagements for one year, from July I, 1911, amounted to £166 4s. 5d., of which the travelling expenses came to £51 13s. 3d., the Bandmaster's gratuity, £16 6s. 4d., and the fees to the Bandsmen to £98 4s. 10d. The number of engagements was twenty.eight. (6) Colonel Skinner brought before the Committee the question of paying for the iusurance of the Chapel and Memorials therein at the Queen Alexandra Hospital. After considerable discussion it was proposed by Surgeon. General Babtie, seconded by Surgeon. General Donovan, and resolved :- "That the sum of £4 4s. be paid per annum for the insurance of the Chapel and Memorials, if such insurance is permitted." "That the insurance be in the name of the R.A.M.C. Fund, and effected by the Commandant of the College and the Officer-in-charge of Queen Alexandra's Hospital." (7) It was resolved to invite Lieutenant-Colonel G. F. Gubbin to represent the retired officers on this Committee vice Lieutenant-Colonel E. O. Wight, whose term of service on the Committee has expired, failing whom, Lieutenant-Colonel W. W. Pope to be asked to act. (8) It was resolved to give a donation from the General Relief Fund of £2 2s. to the Liverpool Branch of the National Association for the Employment of Reserve Soldiers. (9) It was resolved that if the Band be permitted to play at the Annual Meeting of the Male Nurses' Association, the expenses incurred shall be borne by the Royal

Army Medical Corps Fund on the same terms as are paid by the Royal Army Medical Protected by copyright. College Mess.

ARMY MEDIOAL OFFIOERS' WIDOWS' AND ORPHANS' FUND. THE Committee of the Army Medical Officers' Widows' and Orphans' Fund wishes to bring to the notice of officers of the Corps the benefits offered by this Society; and to draw attention to its strong financial position, as disclosed by the Actuary's Report on the recent quinquennial valuation of the Fund. In this report (a copy of which may be obtained from the Secretary) the Actuary states that "the financial position of the Society continues to be eminently satisfactory," and adds that from the Fund officers can obtain "at least a minimum provision for their widows and orphans at a much lower cost than from any Life Assurance Company or other Society." The annual subscription of a married member provides an annuity of £50, during http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ widowhood, to the widow of the marriage, during which his subscription as a married member began. In the event of the death of the widow this annuity is continued to the children of such marriage until the youngest attains the age of 21 years. It also continues for their benefit, up to the same age, if the widow re· marries. Furthermore, should the wife of the subscriber predecease him, it will be optional for him to continue the subscription he had been paying as a married member, in order to provide an annuity similar to the above for the children of the marriage, until the youngest shall have attaIned the age of 21 years. Provision is also made (Rule X) whereby a part of the surplus at any quinquennial valuation may be applied for the benefit of members, or their wives, or orphan children. Thus, at the valuation as at December 31, 1910, a portion of the surplus was appro priated to bring the £50 annuities, immediate and contingent, in respect of members on the books at December 31, 1910, up to the present statutory limit of £52 per annum;

and also to pro:lide a sum of £100 (in addition to the first half-yearly annuity payment) on September 26, 2021 by guest. immediately on the death of every first-class married member on the books at December 31, 1910, should he predecease his present wife. There is every reason to presume that at the next quinquennial valuation similar additional benefits may be granted t.o members now joining. Unmarried .officers may become members by paying £2 yearly, and can thus reduce the rate of their subscriptions when married. / J R Army Med Corps: first published as 10.1136/jramc-19-05-22 on 1 November 1912.
