[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note The Welsh Horse (Lancers) Yeomanry was part of the Territorial Force of the British Army, and served as part of the Eastern Mounted Brigade (with the Norfolk and Suffolk Yeomanries) and later in the South Eastern Mounted Brigade (with the Sussex, West Kent, and Royal East Kent Yeomanries) during the First World War. The first regiment of the Yeomanry was raised throughout Wales in August 1914 under the auspices of Captain Owen Vaughan ('Owen Rhoscomyl'), and command was given to Hugh Edwardes, 6th Baron Kensington, as Lieutenant-Colonel. The headquarters of the Welsh Horse were initially in Cardiff, but they were subsequently moved to Newtown and later to Norfolk and Kent; most of the soldiers' training was carried out in Glamorgan, Pembrokeshire and Norfolk. Operating primarily as infantry, 1/1 Welsh Horse fought in the Dardanelles, Egypt and Palestine, before being amalgamated with 1/1 Montgomeryshire Yeomanry in 1917 to form 25 Battalion The Royal Welsh Fusiliers, which saw action on the Western Front. Two further regiments of the Welsh Horse (2/1 and 3/1) were raised in 1914 Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru = The National Library of Wales Tudalen | Page 3 GB 0210 WELHORSE Welsh Horse (Lancers) Yeomanry Research Papers, and 1915, with the purpose of providing support for 1/1; neither entered combat, since their purpose was to act as a Reserve (2/1) and to provide initial training (3/1), and both disappeared in administrative re- organisations in 1916 and 1917. The Welsh Horse (Lancers) ceased to exist as a separate Yeomanry after further re-structuring of the Army at the end of the War. - In 1954, the writer Julian Franklyn was commissioned by William Edwardes, 7th Baron Kensington and the son of Hugh Edwardes, to produce a memoir of the Welsh Horse, a draft of which was completed in 1957, relying on Lord Kensington's own papers, official records, and an appeal in the press for information from former soldiers and their families, many of whom contributed their own documents. The memoir, entitled '"Copy their virtues" being a memoir of the Welsh Horse (Lancers)', was never published. All of these papers were put into the care of William Edwardes, 7th Lord Kensington, who donated them to the National Library of Wales. From being taken into use in January 1915 until June 1916 the number of the FPO indicated the Infantry Brigade that it was serving. But in June 1916 it was realised that the Order of Battle of the British Forces in France could be worked out from the post marks. So a system of security exchanges was introduced and every six months FPOs would exchange their date stamps with another FPO. The exchanges are too complicated and lengthy to go into here but are well covered by Proud and Kennedy & Crabbe.     CLARKE, Stanley Fenn Death Sunday11th January 1920 Royal Artillery Honourable Artillery Company Reserve Battery Territorial Force Regiment No: 628495 Rank: Gunner Aged 32 He was a farmer at Pantile Farm, Abberton, who committed suicide with a double barrelled shotgun in 1920, while "temporarily insane". ( Essex County Telegraph February 1920). He had been invalided out of the Army in August 1917 with neurothasthenia or "shell shock". He left a widow, Mrs Winifred M. Clarke. He was the son of the late William & Charlotte Clarke. He had enlisted 24 th November 1916. A card index on the service of members of the Honourable Artillery Company during the First World War shows that Driver Stanley Fenn Clarke was admitted to the HAC on 27 November 1916. His original regimental number was 9504, later changed to 625495 (not 628495 as shown on WO/372/4), and he was posted to the HAC Reserve Battery on 17 March 1917. His address in the vellum admission book was 127 Etchingham Park Road, Finchley, N. He is not in the Rolls of Honour appended to The Honourable Artillery Company in the Great War, 1914-19, edited by G. Gould Walker (London: Seeley, Service, 1930). This book contains further information on the HAC batteries and can be obtained through interlibrary loan at a reference library.
