His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve of the appointment of the undermentioned Officers to be Companions of the Distinguished Service Order, in recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field:- . Captain Hugh Glencairn Monteith, Royal Army Medical Corps (attached 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in picking up and attending to the wounded under heavy fire in the actions near St. Jean and Wieltje, east of Ypres, between April 23 and 27, 1915, when the casualties in the battalion to which he was attached were very heavy. Lieutenant WiIIiam Brooks Keith, M.B., 1st Home Counties Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, Territorial Force. For con'picuous gallantry at Hooge, on the night of April 23 and 24, 1915. When http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ a shell killed two stretcher· hearers who were bringing in a wounded officer, he went out to assist, and under heavy fire brought the wounded officer into the dressing station. He has performed many acts of a like nature, and has consistently shown'coolness and resource und~r fire. Captain KingsmiIl WiIliams Jones, M.D., Royal Army Medical Corps (Special Reserve), attached 1st Battalion, East Kent Regiment. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Hooge. During the entire night of August 9 and 10, 1915, and the whole of the following day and night he was attending to and evacuating wounded from the front trenches, time after time exposing himself to shell and rifle fire. He was twice slightly wounded, but stuck to his work with unflagging energy. It was entirely owing to Captain Jones that the crater was successfully evacuated of wounded. The correspondence regarding the collection dates from 1946. The last of the Mellen Papers were placed in the Manuscript section in March of 1959. The materials in this collection measure 2.82 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the George Frederick Mellen Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research. SCOPE AND CONTENT The George Frederick Mellen Papers, composed of approximately 300 items and 15 scrapbooks, contain correspondence, biographical material, clippings, and sketches. The scrapbooks contain the writings of George F. Mellen which have been clipped from the Knoxville Sentinel and arranged according to subject matter. They deal with many subjects, such as “In the Days of Pioneers,” “Pioneers and Indians,” “Humor and Humorists,” “Preachers and Saddlebags,” “Editors and Newspapers,” “Bucolics of the Lower Appalachians,” “Politics and Politicians,” and others. The correspondence is in regard to Mellen’s private life and also the collection of material for his writings. The dates covered by the correspondence is from 1883 to 1926, the largest portion falling in the years from 1911-1915, during the time when Mellen was doing most of his writings for the Knoxville Sentinel.
