Edwards, R.A.M.C. (T) (Transport Officer), who is a city Councillor, and his offer was eagerly accepted by the city. "The principal firms where the men were employed, were telephoned to at 11 a.m., and they were requested to give the men leave to help in the relief work. Messrs. Colman, of Carrow Works, at once released all men of the R.A.M.C. (T) in their employment. The Norwich Press assisted by publishing in their mid'day edition that the members of the ambulance should report themselves at headquarters in service dress. Horses were requisitioned;for two ambulances, and at noon a start was made, the ambulance wagons conveying men to the various relief centres. This was necessary ow'ing to the streets being flooded. "The strength of the Field Ambulance in Norwich itself is 198 ofal! ranks. Of these over 150 reported for duty, and by 7 p.m. were nearly all at work. The remainder could not be spared from their employment. Temporary hospitals were established in various schools and were managed by N.C.Os. and men of the unit. The cases treated were mostly sho~k, fits, sprains and contusions. The experience was of great value to the Field Ambulance, for it covered such points as ventilation, first aid, and attending toa rush of homeless people of all ages and sexes, and evacuating them to .civilian hospitals and teniporary quarters. The fact of the men being in uniform and under discipline proved very useful in giving confidence to the sufferers, and not improbably prevented panic in some of the bUildings. It also brought home to. the citizens the advantage of having a body of trained ambulance men in their midst, and has promoted the most cordial relations between the R.A.M.C. (T) and the city of Norwich. "Lieutenant-Colonel Stacy and Captain Bremner superintended the various temporary hospitals and with the other medical men of the city assisted in attending the sick and injured. Lieutenant Edwards worked hard at the organization, Lieu teuant Mason (Quartermaster), Serjeant-Major J. Connell, R.A.M.C., and Serjeants Protected by copyright. Legge and Palmer, R.A.M.C. (T.) did excellent work. " Amongst the letters received by the 0.0. in connection with the flood work are the following ;- "From G.O.O. in 0., Eastern Oommand:- "The G.O.O. in O. desires that his appreciation of the good work done by the 2nd East Anglian Field Ambulance should be conveyed to the Oommanding Officer of that unit. "(Sigued) H. G. Fitton, Colonel, A. A. G. for Major-General in charge of . Administration Eastern Oommand. "London, September 14, 1912." "The Guildhall, Norwich, " October 21, 1912. "Norwich Flood, 1912."

"Dear Sir,-At its meeting on September 27 last, the Oouncil passed a resolution http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ of thanks to all workers in connection with the flood, and I have pleasure in sending you a copy herewith. "Copy of Resolution. "Resolved that the hearty thanks of the Oouncil be accorded to those who so ungrudgingly rendered services in connection with the various relief works necessitated by the great flood during the last week of August, 1912. " By the Oouncil. "(Signed) Arnold H. Miller, Town Clerk." " I sbould like to add my own personal tribute to the splendid work which was so generously done at a time when the needs of the city required the ungrudging co;operation of all its inhabitants. " Believe me, " Yours faithfully, "(Signed) H. J. Oopeman, Lord Mayor. "To the Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and men of the 2nd East Anglian on September 28, 2021 by guest. "With regard to the usefulness of a uniformed and disciplined body of men for work in such circumstances, the Medical Officer of Health for Norwich (Major Oooper Pattin) in his speech at the prize distribution said; 'That though he knew that he could have got any number of voluntary helpers he chose the Field Ambulance, because with civilian helpers, however useful each one might be, the net result would have. been confusion; while with the Field Ambulanee, the men being accustomed to acting together and to discipline, the result was order and good work carried out.'
