Tombstone (1993) HISTORY V. HOLLYWOOD: TOMBSTONE (1993) Mr. Shipp PLOT SYNOPSIS AND REVIEW Synopsis • Wyatt Earp and his brothers, Virgil and Morgan, settle in Tombstone, AZ after retirement. Here, they join up with an old friend, Doc Holliday. Earp and company have several hostile encounters with the “Cowboys,” a group of outlaws led by Curly Bill and Johnny Ringo. These encounters ultimately turn deadly with a shootout at the O.K. Corral, leaving several Cowboys dead. Wyatt’s brother Morgan is killed and Virgil is maimed by the Cowboys, so he and Doc set out for revenge. They exact their vengeance by killing both Curly Bill and Johnny Ringo before Doc Holliday dies of tuberculosis. Review • I think Tombstone is one of the greatest American Westerns ever made. The acting is great from every actor involved, but especially from Val Kilmer (Doc Holliday) and Kurt Russell (Wyatt Earp). Gunfights are clear and the action is easy to follow. I would absolutely recommend this film to anybody. The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened.

    OLD WEST STORUES William Floyd “Willie or Billy” Claiborne, a.k.a. “The Kid” Or was his name Calyborne? Clayborn? Or was it Claborn? Or did Billy even know. There are copies of his signature in at least two of these versions. All his trial documents list him as Clayborne. Viola Slaughter, wife of the noted Arizona lawman John Horton Slaughter, knew him well and spelled it as Claibourne. Well, we do know for sure that he was born in Mississippi. Or was it Louisiana? But more than likely it was in Alabama. The 1870 census shows records that would fit all three states. The record for Mississippi spells the name as Claborn, but the census takers were not the best for spelling. But this one seems to best fit the bill for Billy (Photo at right) and it shows that he was born in Alabama. He stated in court that he was born on October 21, 1860, and was from Mississippi. So we accept the date and the fact that he probably meant that he was raised in Mississippi. He migrated to the Devil’s River area of west Texas where some accounts say he killed two men. He became a cowboy and went to work for John Horton Slaughter. He was part of a crew that drove a Slaughter herd of cattle from Texas to Arizona and stayed. On October 1, 1881, in Charleston, Arizona Territory (now a ghost town), he shot and killed a blacksmith named James Hickey at Harry Queen’s Saloon. Exactly why he did it is not known.

John Henry ‘Doc’ Holliday (1851-1887) was a man devoid of fear, reputed to have killed up to fifty men (‘Caught in Denver’, 1882). Yet journalists were astonished to discover he was also a genteel, frail-looking ‘consumptive’ living with incurable tuberculosis. Holliday’s consumptive body fascinated contemporaries – partly because this impairment was traditionally associated with a Romantic, sentimental disabled identity quite incongruous with his brutal reputation, and partly because he seemed physically incapable of violence: one journalist even marvelled that his slender wrists could hold a gun (‘Awful Arizona’, 1882). Yet these early descriptions emphasised above all the elective aspects of his physical presence – his polished manners and exquisite dress and grooming – and presented his consumptive body not as a passive object of pathology or pity but, rather, as an essential component of a persona defined by self-possession, neatness, and ‘a suavity of manner for which he was always noted’ (‘Caught’, 1882). Holliday’s contemporaries delighted in the debonair consumptive gunfighter, but this delight did not last long after his death.

    The Terminator By John Wills “The Terminator” is a cult time-travel story pitting hu- mans against machines. Authored and directed by James Cameron, the movie features Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn in leading roles.     Twisted Trails of the Wold West By Matthew Baugh © 2006 The Old West was an interesting place, and even more so in the Wold- Newton Universe. Until fairly recently only a few of the heroes and villains who inhabited the early western United States had been confirmed through crossover stories as existing in the WNU. Several comic book miniseries have done a lot to change this, and though there are some problems fitting each into the tapestry of the WNU, it has been worth the effort. Marvel Comics’ miniseries, Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather was a humorous storyline, parodying the Kid’s established image and lampooning westerns in general. It is best known for ‘outing’ the Kid as a homosexual. While that assertion remains an open issue with fans, it isn’t what causes the problems with incorporating the story into the WNU. What is of more concern are the blatant anachronisms and impossibilities the story offers. We can accept it, but only with the caveat that some of the details have been distorted for comic effect. When the Rawhide Kid is established as a character in the Wold-Newton Universe he provides links to a number of other western characters, both from the Marvel Universe and from classic western novels and movies. It draws in the Marvel Comics series’ Blaze of Glory, Apache Skies, and Sunset Riders as wall as DC Comics’ The Kents. As with most Marvel and DC characters there is the problem with bringing in the mammoth superhero continuities of the Marvel and DC universes, though this is not insurmountable.

    Journal of American Studies of Turkey 39 (2014): 113-122 Mako Mori and the Gender Politics of Pacific Rim (2013) Nathanael Hood Carefully balancing on the top of an escape pod somewhere in the South China Sea, pilots Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kukuchi) embrace after successfully saving the world from an invasion of giant, extra-dimensional monsters known as “kaiju.” This ending from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim (2013) seems to cohere to traditional narrative tropes within the Western action genre wherein the hero triumphantly kisses his love interest after a great struggle, battle, or fight. And yet, a close inspection of this scene reveals a shocking subversion of this reliable concluding scenario: Becket and Mori do not kiss. They draw close, touch foreheads, and even lean in for a hug as the screen cuts to the credits. But again, they do not consummate their victory with a kiss. The absence of a kiss wasn’t an oversight on del Toro’s part. In fact, it was a conscious creative choice, recounting in an interview that he had filmed three different versions of the scene including one where they did kiss. Del Toro said: “We did one version where they kiss and it almost felt weird. They’re good friends, they’re pals, good colleagues” (qtd. Faraci). The idea that two (supposedly) heterosexual heroes would not fall in love during the course of a film and instead become good friends seems oddly counter-intuitive. For western audiences, the development of romantic feelings concluding with a kiss between the protagonist and their love interest is quintessential for creating a sense of narrative closure (Doane 196).
